Hi,
I believe the best way is to paint by brush, using enamel full gloss paint. Thats what would have been used in the past.
Look at Reddos teardrop thread, & the one on "Lucille" I did a while back. Theres heaps of info & comments about painting on the Forum, just a matter of finding where its stashed.

Hi Alf,
You're putting it together well.
I put a big 2400 watt invertor into my wiring in my ply van "Lucille", & it will run a 240v fridge & microwave off the one battery I have.
Its a thought seeing you are doing it properly.

Hi Guys, You're making me feel sad my Dodge is still in the panel shop . A four month rust repair has blown out to 10 months, with no definite end in site. Cost is over 10 times what I expected, but the quality of the work is very good. Reason for this post, is the old Dodge is a great towcar. Sure mines got a HQ graft, power steering, 351 Clevo, Auto, 9", Dual Fuel, etc, but I think the wheelbase & weight of the 54 to 56 Dodge /Chrysler/De Soto, & their derivatives the Chrysler Royal, make for a real well balanced tow car. I'm prejudiced. Just sweating on getting mine back so I can put it back together & use it again. JBJ

Hi Rollydog.
Lennox Heads about 20 minutes South of Byron, down the coast road to Ballina from Byron.
You go into Lennox off the coast road. It hits a tee junction, with the pub on the left, & the ocean ahead. Turn left & go down until you hit the park, about a kilometre or so.
For those coming north or south to Lennox Head, best way is to avoid Byron Bay & its traffic , just go along the highway until you see signs to Lennox Head, then take that offramp.
Its quite easy to get on the wrong roads if try to navigate Byron Bay.

Hi,
I wasn't aware of Toowoomba Swap being the same weekend, because I dont go to it (too far for me), & I guess Dosse wasn't aware either.
I guess its just one of those unfortunate things that sometimes happens when 2 events collide in time.

Hi Freeway,
What a great lot of PIX.
I had a Freeway Wagon a while back, Modified it a fair bit, lowered, wide rims, bigger engine, etc, & it was the most reliable every day car I've had.
I think I gave it away in the end.
Taswegia is somewhere us Northerners never seem to get to. Its COLD down there.
Thank you for the pix.

Hi Greedy,
When I rebuilt my Sunliner, I used the old light bodies, & cut up the modern LED's to fit inside, Gives good light, but looks original.

Hi,
Its a really rare Kennedy, & apparently not for sale. Its been shown on the Forum over the last five years, more than once.
One of those things, anyone that owns a van can do what they like really, & no one can force anyone to look after something or sell it.
Luckily its Fibreglass, as a ply van would deteriorate much quicker.

Hi Alf,
You're going well.
Nothing to it really after a while, just simple hard work & keeping at it.
I reckon you'll make your deadline the way you are going. Cant wait to see it finished

Hi Smiley,
Its always good to see new potential vintage vanners attend, even if it has to be in a non vintage van.
Not everyone starts out with an old van, but it is a very contagious hobby, & generally doesn't take a lot of time to end up with one. It will be nice to meet new people this time around.

Hi, I remember taking these pix at Mt Gambier Nationals, This was supposedly built in the early 60's from memory. The people using it were vague, because it belonged to their parents, from near Hamilton in Southern Vic. JBJ

Hi All, (Updated on 11 january) Well Dosse & Ilse came for a drive today, & met me at Lake Ainsworth. Took them 2 1/2 hrs to get here, & me 20 minutes driving slowly. THE PARK WEBSITE IS www.ballinabeachside.com.au. Have a look at it & you'll see the tea tree lake that is less than 50 metres from our camp sites. I've lived in this area since 1980, & you tend to forget how good it is to city slickers. I think Dosse & Ilse liked the place, because they booked their lakeview site & we reserved 17 others. We can have about 38 sites in a group if we get in fast, but for now we have 12 powered sites without slabs, & 6 with slabs, all adjoining, across the road from the lake, the undercover barbeque, & the amenities. I've just had a call from Debbie at the park, & they've just added a few more sites, which I was told were tent sites. They are across the road from the lake, & even closer than where we started out. I guess a few more paces away wont worry those of us that have already booked. We're now on $24 per night, so those of you that payed more will get a refund on booking in , so I'm told, with extra people $8 per head, & tents for kids are OK if they fit on the site. This is the park the Caravan Club had their Nationals at recently. OK. What you need to do is look at the site map. Pick one of the nominated sites by number, then ring the park , book that site under the" Vintage Caravans" group booking, & pay your deposit. Then notify me on line or by PM, or email, & we will list you & your site. BUT if you dont pay the deposit to the park you may not get a site. This is a big park, but fills up quickly sometimes. The Sites we have booked are as follows. This has been updated 27/10, as Debbie from the Park rang me & told me we were not given all the options on Sunday when Dosse & I went there.' Note what are shown as Tent sites T2 to T10 are really van sites with power, a new map is being prepared. . I will keep this List updated, & if we need more sites I'll book as we go. At this stages sites 64 to 83 are also available.\ Updated 18/01 No Slabs 50 - Sutcac 52 - Dosse 54 - Rollydog 55 - Jondi 56 - 54 Homemade 58 - Smiles 80 - Stan 62 81 - Cruisingdoug 82 - Banno 83 - Banno 84 - Pete & Trish 85 - Vernon 86 - Magicangelisa 87 - Trevorpauline 88 - Trevor & Julie T2 - Vacant T3 - Trub 73 T4 - Rodnet T5 - Vacant T6 - Vacant T7 - Vacant T8 - Vacant T9 - Vacant T10 - Vacant Slab Sites 27 - Earlee 59 - Phil, Louise, Michelle & Jon 60 - David & Lyn 61 - JBJ 62 - 46 Anglia 63 - Kevin & Jean 64 - Bob&Jacqui 65 - Boblor 66 - Stephen & Julie 67 - Clueless Sharon So get moving & organise your site, & if you want tent sites, ring & organise them yourselves. Remember to book under Vintage Caravan Group & get your discount. JBJ

Hi Daggsey & Carrots,
Bit sad to see her go. I still her in the mud in front of our shed in my mind occassionly.
But all things progress they tell me. We also had to get rid of one van, & I've never been forgiven for selling our Sunliner.
It will be good to see what you do next

Hi All,
Well we looked at couple of parks, & made a few enquiries.
Firstly the weekend 5&6 Feb would be clear of the school holidays & Australia Day weekend, so relatively clear of the Tourist hordes we get here in holiday times. If the majority want an earlier date, we can go back to the park managers & ask.
I see 4 possibilities, & I'll list them in order of preference after looking at prices, whats nearby, etc. We asked for prices based on 10 to 20 vans
Lake Ainsworth in Lennox Head is the biggest & cheapest. Its $24 per night, all together in a group, powered sites, small camp kitchen & undercover barbeque. Its on the side of a tea tree lake, great safe swimmingh in brown tinted water, surf beach across the road. Lennox Head is between Ballina & Byron Bay, & has a lovely village atmosphere if the crowds arent too big. Has a pub, a lot of restaurants, & Byron markets are on the Sunday. NO dogs allowed. Also has a fantastic Ice Creamery.
Ballina Lakeside $32 per night 2 people, $12 extra per person. Has a camp kitchen, & there is a separate that is allowed dogs. Has camp kitchen. This park is top quality, on the side of Shaws Bay in Ballina, next to the beach & River.
Brunswick Heads on river, $38 per night, 2 people. No dogs, & has camp kitchen. This is a fairly large park. Brunswick Heads has beach & river, a pub & many restaurants
Silver Sands at Evans Head, as Dosse first mentioned. This is the most Southern of these parks,& Evans Head is a beautiful little beachfront town, but a bit isolated from the adjoining "attractions". It has great national parks & beach/walking areas if thats your scene, & probably the best fishing of the lot .
Any thoughts?? Our personal preference leans to Lake Ainsworth, mainly because of its locality. Its close to everything that happens , its a good open style park, & the swimming in the lake is great, with lots of shaded picnic areas around the lake, just 100 metres from the vans.
Secondly I would suggest Evans Head. We've camped there a few times & its not a bad spot.

Hi,
Maybe a direct approach, telling the truth, that its one of Australias oldest surving caravans. Offer to buy them a $500 van for a cubby house, thats fresh & clean, without 50 years of toxins etc.
Then if they still say no, I'll put my 12 guage in a tube with a few 00 shells, & mail it to you to sort them out.
I'm always prepared to help the cause.

Hi,
I've heard of the Starlight vans, & know where they were supposedly built, but none of the locals I know ( I've lived & worked in Alstonville since early 1980) know anything more than that. I've asked a few, & a lot know of my passion for old cars & vans, but no one has came forward to date.
It will be good to get some genuine details, because a lot of these "unknown" vans that pop up could well be built in small factory operations, with no records or references kept.

Hi All,
Theres a lot of reasonable parks around between Brunswick Heads, Ballina & Evans Head.
At Evans Head we used to go to a rod run where they allowed us all to camp in a little used area near the riverfront, which was great.
I know Brunswick heads caravan park hosts that rod run now, so they must have reaonable amount of sites available.
Also possibly Lennox Head, Ballina ,or even Boring Bay (Byron bay) may have enough sites in one of their many parks.
But timing will be critical. This part of the coast is chaos near & in school holidays.
So I guess someone pick a date, see who's likely to roll up, then Boots & I being locals can sound the parks out & see what options we have.

Hi Bob,
Good to see you getting stuck into it.
They are a much better built van than a Sunliner, & very stylish. Quest made some really different stuff. I saw one down near Morgan in SA on our first nationals trip. It was fiberglass, with a one piece front done in a diamond pattern, with an oval "Quest" in the middle under the window. It was about 14' long from memory, & sides & top were glass, but made in what appeared to be big panels, held together over some sort of frame.
As it was locked & unattended, I didnt look really closely, beyond a serious lookover.
I've seen other "Quest" vans in caravan parks, & they seem to be all sorts of sizes & shapes.
Do we have any great amount of history on them??

Hi Leigh & Dave,
I used Volvo wheels on my Jailbar, using HK bolt pattern. They have a lot more inwards offset than Holden. I even tried them (6" wide)on the back of an EH, & they just cleared everything. You could drive it OK, but it looked weird to me sitting high with big diameter wheels.
They dont have hubcap attachments, so would be clean looking. Several different hole cutout shapes with the different model Volvos also.
Not much, but it might help.

OK,
Boots has just been in contact, & tentatively booked 12 sites.
Costs are pretty good ( check out their website). $40 covers a family for whole event. Camping on grounds is FREE, but there is no powered sites. Amenities are provided??? but not swe what is there or what will be near campsites at this stage.
I reckon David & Lyn's genset will get a work out if they come, & I guess more than one can be used.
Dogs are allowed in the camping area, on a lead, but not inside the event.
The woman Boots spoke to seems more than happy to help where she can.
Already a few have indicated they probably will go, so if you are thinking possibly?? check out their webpage.
They have indicated we will be placed together, but if more than 12 want to go we should expand our numbers as early as possible. As the camping is free its no big deal, you wont be penalised for saying probably & not turning up.
$40 is a pittance for a weekend of entertainment, compared with normal camping fees & no entertainment.
Let us know if you are seriously considering going so we can keep numbers realistic for them.
We will have a few brochures at Canungra

Hi,
My two bobs worth on awning tracks.
The first awning I ever used had Marconi Clips, & it was a total pain to use, It was an old Millard pop top, so wasnt very high to the track. If you didnt get them right they caught on the track as you pulled it on. Second van I bought that had an annex was a 10 foot 1958 Purdon ply van, & it had a sail track fitted, which would probably have been one of the earliest fitted ( I think).
The difference in setting up the annex was unbelievable.
My Sunliner when I bought it had a fairly old annex, again with sail track.
I see no historical ( or sensible) reason to use marconi track & clips , unless you already have them fitted.
If you have Marconi clips & tracks on an annex, & want to make an awning, why not run the sail track almost alongside the marconi track, with enough clearance to allow you to use either when you wish. On a Sunliner it means fitting extra wooden blocks inside the roof for the track screws to fit int6o. Other than having to remove the headlining thats not a major task.
I found in my sunliner the sailtrack screws caused a couple of water leaks, & would always in future apply a sealant around all screws thru the roof before installation.
I reckon the reason the Marconi track system lost favour is because it was a mongrel of a thing.

Hi All,
Looks like we missed another good one. Obviously Rollydogs efforts made it very worthwhile.
Its sometimes difficult for us to get up to the northern events in our group, but that doesnt mean we wouldn't attend if we could.
Hopefully next week the new engine will be fitted to my hotrod after the failure at Wintersun. Its been a big job getting everything together, like all old car rebuilds.
Again hopefully I will get my Dodge back from the body shop by christmas (this year). Everything seems to take forever when you are paying people to do the work instead of doing it yourself.
But you cant be self employed & earning money if you are fixing things.
See you at Canungra (Hopefully)

Hi Halps,
Great to see you guys having fun. Thats whats life supposed to be about.
I sit back at times on my vintager van moments, when Boots & I are really enjoying our travelling & camping, & I mentally thank my parents for taking us 4 kids away on long travelling trips, generally ending up on the sunshine coast, from Moss Vale.
It gave me great lifelong memories I still have. I regularly wish I had of got into vintage vanning when I was younger, & had given my 3 daughters the chance to have the memories. We did a fair bit of tent camping & travelling, but it doesnt have the same feel as vanning.
So keep at it, you are doing a great thing for you & your kids
