Started cutting today. The grinder came up trumps for manoeuvrability but the Bahco Profcut laminator for a very straight, fine cut. It is a very good handsaw. As far as speed they are about equal believe it or not. Thanks everyone.

I finally got the ply I needed. I had a big roll of stencil paper so I made a stencil of the back of the van. This is a pic of the stencil taped onto the ply sheet, ready for marking out. The slits are so I don't have to mess around with existing wiring.... I will just use the off cuts from the slits to fill in behind the wiring once the floor slides into place. Lo and behold the ply sheet fits!

Cheap at chips but I suspect not as nice as a real metal strip.

Thanks bubbles, rattles, and greedy (where but on the 'net would I write that intro). I am trying to keep weight in mind as the van seems quite heavy already.

Indeed, I curbed my collecting by buying/selling. Now I mourne all the cool stuff I sold. Made some nice pocket money though.
No, the fish don't travel with us.

Not quite 1950's... more late 1960's but a cool bunch of fish nevertheless (IMO).

Oh they will get used when the novelty wears off... perhaps. My experience when buying vintage is get stuff that is in top condition and look after it well. Those canisters still have wear and use marks but they have no cracks or bad damage. I reject your assessment of "no good, won't be used" Cobber. When did you last use that bottle of mortein? ;D
Have a great day.... Bill

Oh not too generous Shell. These were at a trendy shop and cost a bit more than they are worth. BUT, the yellow on black is lovely and hard to find, so it was grab them and pay up. $99 is a good price for the spice canisters... I must admit I am tempted.
cheers, Bill

I personally prefer to go out with humans but hey, whatever takes your fancy. She might ask for expensive meals though? A date with cold beer on demand. What's her phone number?

Thanks Atog, I will double clamp but I don't like the design at all. If I can think of a way to change it I will.

Greedy, I suppose slats wouldn't be that much heavier. I know the good stuff won't sag but I haven't priced it. It may be expensive.
Reddo, I like to know my arse is secure.

I seem to make a mess with a jigsaw Humpty. I have bought a Bahco Profcut laminator - it wasn't $30 though.... $55. Everything is expensive in the West. I got some 1mm metal cutting discs for my grinder as well. All I need now is the ply and I am in business.... its on order.

The water filler pipe on my olympic comes in through the van body, through the floor, and into the water tank. The pipe is damaged, which is likely another reason for the floor damage. Given the olympics and water don't mix well this design seems like an unnecessary risk. Has anyone tried an alternative setup so the pipe doesn't go through the van? I am assuming it is original... perhaps it is an add on. See pic below: cheers, Bill

Nice van Ian and Steph. Why do you say "supposedly 1959 Viscount Classic". Are you unsure of the vintage. I love the multicoloured kitchen doors.

I was thinking what would make a good strong bed base, was light, and let a lot of air around the mattress. I thought security screen might fit the bill. Has anyone tried it.
Yes I know it isn't true to the period.

Most of the work is in the preparation. You might be able to organise to do all the prep and get it sprayed professionally at a good price. I did a boat in 2 part epoxy and it is not easy to get a mirror finish unless you have good spray gear. It will show up every pin prick if you scrimp on preparation. Done properly the finish is suburb though. Are the painted areas on the van textured? its hard to tell on the pic. Textured finish is more forgiving than smooth.
I badly want one of these vans..... anyone want to buy an Olympic (ducks for cover).

As far as painting it I reckon two part epoxy would be the go.

Barbara, have a look on ebay. There are a few generic types at low cost that apparently are quite good.
