I might give it a go Greedy. It a pain hunting around for stuff from here. I can always strip it off if I don't like. I suspect it will come unstuck from people getting in/out of bed.... but worth a try.

I want to put some stainless or aluminium edging along the top of the new beds. They are 9mm ply. I am thinking of the nail-on sort of edging that used to be used on tables and the like. Is that sort of thing still available? I have an idea that something similar is used as a beading across doorways to hold lino down... but is thicker than 9mm.
Any ideas? Cheers, Bill

Yeah, unfortunately the debit facility allows thieves to skim your account using just the card number. I won't use them for that reason. They are handy when travelling overseas but I just get one of those foreign currency cards from the bank instead. If you want to stop the problem just have a seperate credit card and get rid of the debit card. They can't skim the "old" bank cards that don't have a credit symbol on them. Banks prefer you to have a debit, so that is what they push, but the "normal" cards are still avaliable and will remain so.

I assume these thefts are from bank debit cards, that is, bank cards with a visa symbol that are not actual credit cards. I had a friend lose her entire savings from one of these cards.... she got it back but was without cash for two weeks.

Great job... great pics. My Dad was very handy, being a retired car and wagon builder. He died a few years back but, still, when I get stumped on the van I have a "ring Dad" message go up in my mind. Anyhow, keep the pics coming!

Ok, the decision is made. I am going to leave it exactly as is and accept it as a peculiarity of the van. Thanks everyone.

Thanks H. Neither really suits my purpose as they make the bed room feel smaller. At least I now know they don't have a structural purpose. It had cloth covered board when I got it but I don't really like it.... cloth covered board never seems clean to me.

Thanks Shell and Roe, I like the idea of curves and have been thinking that way.... but are unsure how to go about it yet. I will search for some pics. OR hopefully someone will read this and take some pics of their original setup??

Thanks Gordon, the water inlet is going. I am going to put the tankfilling pipe on the outside rather than through the floor. The 12v pump is gone. I will remove that white water pipe (which was where the pump was) and put a unbroken line to a hand pump at the sink. The less chance of leakage the better! I think I will get a good quality galley pump from a yacht suppliers.

The work under the windows is different on either side of the van at the bed end of my van. I suspect one is original but which? notice in the 2 pictures below - one side has an angled "beam" running directly under the window. The other has a gap directly under the window, then a beam. Anyone know which is as it was originally? I suspect its the second one. cheers, Bill

Thanks to everyone who gave instructions and advice in htis, my first foray into caravan work (or any similar undertaking). In the end the floor is terrible and, thus, the outside panels don't look as straight as I would like. The plan is to do the whole floor in a few years. Perhaps use this one and recon another (perhaps 1970's) van. Then do a good job on the Olympic, floor up, while using the other van (wife does not know this plan yet). The beds worked out ok. Almost all of the cutting was done by hand, so thanks to whoever it was that recommended the Bahco profcut laminator.... great little saw. when I do the "big job" I will be buying some good power tools. When I redo the floor I will look at different options. Perhaps marine ply or the fiberglass sheeting they make boat floors out of. Now on to the panelling, painting, etc.

The beds are in. Now I have to panel the walls to make it look pretty. I ended up using 9mm exterior ply as it was cheap. What I gained in weight was offset a bit by less batons and the "cutaway" hatch at floor level. Using a thicker ply certainly made the job easier. I have built the beds with a mind to removing them in the future. The plan is to completely strip the van and do a proper job on the floor in a few years time. cheers, Bill

I had a few attempts to harden rotted wood in a boat. My conclusion from the experience is use what you can salvage as a template and replace the rotted wood with healthy, strong timber. In the end it is cheaper and a better fix. Ditto with delaminated ply.

Now I am putting the beds in I am noticing errors I did on the floor.... its not level for a start. Ah well..... so long as it holds together I am not redoing it.

I have to replace the wall lining at the bed end of my Olympic. I always intended to use painted ply but she who must be obeyed has other ideas. She wants a 1967 period look. Can the 1960's look laminex still be purchased?
cheers, Bill

Actually there was a thread on another site recently about imported English vans. The consensus seemed to be "ok but not up to aussie conditions"....... seems they were right.
