.Thanks hilldweller & SGTL,
Only 'invited celebrity guests' were admitted to this bash, so they missed out on our scintillating narration of Ol '36s history and features, on top of that.... the PR company wanted Driftwood but...., Baz said "I WANT OL '36", so now she thinks she's a bigger star than poor old Driftwood. Not easy living with celebrities I can tell you

At last Ol '36 is starting to earn her keep
Last week, on the 26th Feb. she was engaged to help Baz Lurhmann launch The new 'Absolut Oz' vodka at the Bucket List at Bondi Beach.
Full house.
Absolutely Strictly Voddy Sweety Darling
By Nell Schofield. (That's Nell on the left in the above photo )
My old buddy Baz Luhrmann got in touch the other day to ask if I could be MC Big Nelly at the launch of his new vodka, Absolut Oz. The do was at the Bondi Pavilion where Baz and I launched our own theatrical careers back in 1982. We’d both starred in movies the year before (me in ‘Puberty Blues’ and him in ‘Winter Of Our Dreams’) and had tried to get into NIDA to hone what had until then been an instinctive craft but we were unceremoniously rejected. So we decided to put on our own play in which we obviously starred. It was Stephen Poliakoff’s ‘American Days’ and, as Baz reminded me last night, the opening was attended by the awesome Aussie actor Jack Thompson and the legendary agent Harry M Miller. The critics were also there and they hated it. Undeterred, we pursued our dream and finally got into NIDA where we worked up a little play called ‘Strictly Ballroom’ which Baz is now about to unleash on Sydney audiences as a characteristically camp and overblown musical, 30 years on. But last night it was strictly vodka. After the mandatory papping that one must undergo as the date of the maestro, we settled into the cocktails, each one named in honour of an Aussie beach – Hells Bells, Tama Glama, South Avoca Elevator and Stairway to the Moon (Cable Beach). Uber Creative Director Tony Assness did the decor which included performing muscle Marys, gigantic bowls of kaffir limes and a 1939 wooden caravan to which I retreated after the speeches. It was the most adorable unit I’d ever experienced with yellow bakelite handles on the tiny kitchen drawers and triangular pop out windows with delightful fitted curtains. Our Lady of the Caravans was there to greet me in her sexy negligee with a cocktail in hand. I immediately wanted to hitch the whole thing to my tow bar and drive off into the tequila sunset. A friend had just given me a copy of the inaugural edition of a new magazine called ‘Time to Roam Australia’ – Australia’s new favourite caravan and camping magazine – the cover of which features a fab photo of The Don, one of Australia’s first popular trade-built caravans currently celebrating its 80th birthday. Caravan Love was definitely in the air. I grabbed Baz and the managing director of Pernod-Ricard Julien Hemard and we all cosied up together on the crocheted nana blankets and pillows away from the madding crowd. This adorable little roadshow is about to hit a beach near you so stay tuned for updates and remember to always drink responsibly. And........ she also features in an article in the Feb/March issue of the Southern Highlands magazine 'Highlife'There are three caravans in the article but..... only one of us is vintage Vintagecaravans.com gets a mention in the text as the driving force behind the hobby. Hi All. A Blue Flyer WeddingWe were contacted by a lovely young couple who saw the Flyer here on the forum and wanted to involve her in their special day. Well, of course, when asked if she wanted to be in the wedding, the Blue Flyer said, "I do!" So in April, they will be married beachside, and the Flyer, a whole lot of vintage bits and bobs (see "scene setting" above), and the car will provide some "colour". So, watch out Cobber! We're horning in on your space. Cheers Seeshell Well done seeshell, I don't mind one little bit if you jump on this band wagon. I am just about to update Ol '36s recent adventures. The Blue Flyer will provide some great photo opportunities for the newly weds, don't let the chance go by for you to get some shots for your scrapbook too Cobber.

. G'day jcobes7,
Welcome to the wonderful world of vintage caravanning
For posting photos we suggest you use one of the photo hosting sites such as 'photobucket' For advice on how to do that ( and a lot of other things regarding the forum ) click here
Regarding the 'Tennyson' caravan.... There has been mention of them a few times on the forum and if you do a 'search' for Tennyson you'll find those posts ( how to do a search ?.. have a look at this post franklin1 gave us a few days ago).
If you click here it will take you to the Tennyson thread in our 'Down History Lane' section on the forum, you can let us know if your van looks like any of those.

G'day Al,
And thank you for raising this subject, it surely is an anniversary worthy of celebration aye?
The tenth anniversary of the vintagecaravans.com web site ( which led to the formation of the forum) was celebrated two years ago with a tour of the South Western corner of WA As it transpired it was difficult for many people to be able to travel the distance and spare the time to take part in that celebration but it did happen and it was a great success for those able to take part in it.
However the forum has had such a profound influence on the development of the vintage caravan hobby in Australia that it's tenth anniversary should be recognised and acknowledgment made that it would not be happening if it were not for the two people who started it.... Mark Taylor and Jeni ( ditzygypsy ).
As you say, the official start of the forum was the 26th July 2004
Is it too late to organise an event close to that date ?... are there too many events already proposed between now and then ?.....would people organising any of those events feel inclined to re-designate it as a 'Forum 10th Anniversary' celebration ?... should a 'Forum 10th Anniversary' celebration be combined with the fifth 'Vintage Caravans Nationals' at Broken Hill ? ....... or should an event be held later in the year ?
Just a few points to think and talk about.... thanks again for bring the subject to our attention Al

G'day Doug,
I reckon your post is in the right place mate, what you are talking about is a 'feature' of the new photobucket.
I noticed that Don R had the same problem a week or two ago and I had it a couple of months ago.
I took the option of coughing up the extra dollars (about $30 I think ) to upgrade my account for 12 months.
Part of your problem is those great photos you post of the tours you've been on...... people just keep going back to them again and again for inspiration

Thanks Andrew, that ice box will scrub up very nicely, then you might show us the 'after' photos... aye ? Here's another very nice ice box that is in a 'Castle' caravan. Notice the top shelf has four round rings to help locate the milk bottles, or any other bottles for that matter, that's an unusual feature you might have noticed The shelves might need rearranging to achieve that purpose better but that would not be a problem with this ice box..... the shelf supporting pins were easily moved up or down the side of the box. Wood is good and......... Ice is nice Cobber.

g'day Murray,
Thanks for posting that article from the woman's Weekly, way back in 1935 aye ?
I'm having a bit of trouble focusing on the item... do you know if it says either van was actually MADE in Australia ?
Let me warn you ..... resist the temptation to go searching Trove for all things that might be of interest to you....... you'll go crazy.
Just look at Al Franklin1... Don Riccardo..... Griffin..... Me....... all mad as hatters.

This item from the S.A 'Souther Argus' of June 3rd 1938 is interesting I think.
It introduces us to two previously unknown caravan brands, the 'Ace' and the 'Engel', right down at the bottom of the item. It is also of interest that there were five 'Ace' caravans present and two of them were in the possession of gentlemen by the name of Mr. G. Furness and Mr. H. Furness. Were they related to Mr. Keith Furness of 'Furness Caravan' fame ? In the 'Furness' thread in DHL we have an advertisement for a 1938 Furness van so.... next question, is there a connection between 'Ace' caravans and 'Furness' caravans. I can't find evidence of the Ace brand surviving beyond 1938.
Another advertisement that mentions Ace caravans in the Adelaide Advertiser Aug. 31st 1938
I can't find any other mention of 'Engel' caravans so might be wise to leave them until further evidence of their existence comes to light.

G'day Steph,
You won't hear me say this very often but....... if she has been gutted inside and the neighbour wants it as a 'food van' and is offering you more than you paid for it........... I'd let him have it.......... the van that is
I know you love the van and have big plans for it but..... you can spend a heck of a lot of money and time replacing all the inside fittings, wiring and upholstery if you aren't able to do most of the work yourself.
There might be a bit of a problem finding a replacement for it in WA, but they do come up from time to time ( some people over there actually steal caravans from the eastern states.... can you believe that ? )
See what other people on the forum advise but, stick with the vintage caravan hobby, it's good clean fun.

Thanks for posting that photo of Janes draw bar and coupling Mr conti..... my Safari browser on the ipad has been playing silly buggers the last couple of weeks and won't let me look at photobucket .... but now I look on the desktop I see that you have not just got a timber drawbar Jane but a real live timber 'A' frame in great condition.... goes all the way back to the axle, loverly The only thing I would do with that is remove most of the bolts to make sure they haven't gone rusty inside the wood, maybe replace them anyway. Would be interesting to know what the original tow coupling was..... what's there now wouldn't be the original set-up I reckon but with a good clean up it would work OK I bet. Loverly van inside too Cobber.

G'day Jane,
The timber draw bar is an interesting feature of the van aye?
It should also provide an interesting area of research for some of us on this forum. I know nothing about the subject, yet.......... but I bet somebody here will be qualified to offer some advice as to what would be the best timber for the job.
I would imagine the 'Home Beautiful' plans would have specified what timber would be best so that's worth looking at.
Personally ........ I'd be trying to keep a timber draw bar, it would be a great conversation starter but ( keep this to yourself ) I might be tempted to fix a length of flat iron on the underside and along the length of it .....just in case.
