G'day seeshell, Are you thinking of the "Nomad Covered Wagon" or more likely the "Home Comforts Covered Wagon" So.... now we can say it was known in the US of A as the "Palace Travel Coach"..... or can we ..... I don't know who to trust I'll leave it to you to update that thread.........aye ? . Cobber.

Hi Cobber That's it! The one we were speaking of before was the Nomad in the UK and the Covered Wagon in the US - that was offered here but may not have been all that successful? The Palace is another brand with the flared caboose, or "duck bum". ;D The shape was very popular, and was also made by Kozy Koach (Masonite - note the jockey wheel!): In later years this shape stayed, but the materials changed. Westcraft made the Coronado in metal to the early 1950s: But mostly after the war that familiar rounded van shape of the 1950s was on the rise, and the flare was out! Cheers Seeshell

Hi Cobber
While I can agree with you that Janorama and the UK van are both handsome, I can't say as I see a lot of similarity other than colour and general age no matter how much I'd love to agree! Maybe materials and the roof shape are similar, but that was pretty common across a lot of vans no?
Janorama has curved corners where the floor and walls intersect, where the English coach has curved walls coming to hard intersections with the floor. I would agree that the angle where the walls and roof intersect is similar.
The colours are similar, but Janorama doesn't follow the often used "belly line/two-tone" colour placement of some older vans I've seen on English vans of the time. But who knows what is original - either could easily have been changed I suppose.
The windows and doors have similar but not exact construction - but could that just be because it's an efficient way of making windows and doors? Also the UK van has much larger glass surface area and the door is smaller.
Janorama doesn't seem to have beading where sheets of skinning material join, unlike the other van. So there's a difference in construction approach there.
I think there are some similarities, my old dear, but maybe not enough to peg it directly as the inspiration. But that's one layman's view - is there something specifically that you noted?
Cheers Seeshell

G'day seeshell, One of my reasons for giving this thread "a bump" was to bring it to the attention of those who say they want a vintage caravan ....... the English van was mainly an excuse for doing that because I perceived a vague likeness to Janorma, particularly from the roof line down to just below the waist line. I'm not suggesting they were built by the same bloke or even that Janorma was meant to be an exact copy of the English van, what I do believe is that in the very early days of the Australian industry some enterprising individuals took inspiration from some of the styles prevalent in the UK at that time. Another one that continues to intrigue me is the stylistic similarities between Ol '36 and the English Airlite caravanYoung Cobber

Hi Cobber Well I can certainly agree about the reason for the bump, and I do agree that people looked to the "mother country" for inspiration for lots of things. Australia seems to have had the most affinity with the UK - after all, we are a Commonwealth country. The fashion and popular magazines of the time were almost uniquely english-centric, so it makes sense that was extended to holiday options as well. They just added a little Aussie flair! Cheers Seeshell

Good Luck with the sale Pete and Denise... That's a lovely old van.
There has been some very nice genuine old vans come up for sale lately... here .. ebay .. and Gumtree. Have created a lot of interest on all 3 media... Its just a damn pity that people aren't prepared to commit to buying them and getting involved in the vintage van scene as easily as they commit to discussing them.
Is there some sort of Global Financial Crisis that we haven't been told about???
Regards Reddo
