G’day Brenten, Although I’m not there I’m sure the 2024 nationals will be just as successful as all previous ones have been due to the efforts of the organisers and the enthusiasm of vintage vanners in general. Sorry to hear about you dicky heart condition, been there done that 🤪, but I hope you follow instructions a feel better soon.

G’day Jenni, Yes the website shut down a few years ago but the forum is still alive although not as lively as it once was, partly I think, to Facebook. The DHL section is still going strong and looking good thanks to the sterling efforts of Don Ricardo. You can still be proud of your involvement in the creation of the forum so long ago, almost 20 years ago, can you believe that? Hope you are well 😘

Thank you Don R for letting us know about those two museums. I have added the Queensland one to the list and drawn attention to their excellent web site.
I have not included the Shepparton Museum in the list as I don’t think they ever achieved their ambition to get a vintage caravan in the collection, if anybody knows different let me know 😉 As mentioned at the introduction to this thread, Before making a trip to any one of these museums if your main interest in doing so is to see a vintage caravan contact the museum first to confirm that they have one, museums and their collections tend to come & go, I have just heard The Holden Museum in Echuca is about to close down 😢

Jdazzle,
I would do as surf tragic has suggested, talk to an official, the best way to do that in NSW is to front up to a NSW GOV SERVICE CENTRE.
Have your number plate and sale receipt and what you know about the vin # with you, if you get the right person I think they will set you on the right path. Let them know you need the vin # as the blue slip person won’t talk to you without it
you will then need to get a blank plate (off eBuy) fill it out and pop rivet it to your A frame.
Good luck.

Jdazzle,
if you can’t find the plate on the van you can buy a blank vin plate on eBuy and get the number etc engraved on it yourself.
I get the impression if you cough up the $26 they will give you the info online.

Thanks Andrew, I regularly check the BLOG on your site and was pleased to see you have finished your “History of the Curtiss Aerocar” research and able to devote time to updating the Blog, I enjoyed your item about the RV of the future it was interesting to see how many innovations of the future have been done in the days of vintage caravans.

One of the earliest home made caravans that not only is in existence but, is also road registered and able to be used for its intended purpose is this one made by Ernest Walter Barlow in 1933/34 in the yard beside his house at No. 5 Mark St Lidcombe NSW. Mr. Barlow was a skilled furniture maker and made the caravan for use by himself, his wife and two children, so the caravan has sleeping accommodation for four people. One of the earliest photos we have of the van shows Walter’s wife and two children. The two beds for the adults.. The bunks set up for the two children. The external appearance as she is after restoration. To see the thread about her recovery and restoration click HERECobber.

G’day Derk, I don’t have much to say on the forum these days but, you are an inspiration in the art of ‘hanging in there’. I look forward to seeing the panel van up and ready to roll so keep at it 😉 Thanks for the updates. 👏

OK Brenten I won’t mention the 186 motor to anybody ( but I can’t vouch for other members of this forum ) The roof looks great, as does everything else, the luggage area and the rear windows shape is tops.
What will be your next project, Can I make a request ? I’d like to see an FX or FJ Electric All Wheel Drive Convertible ( with heated leather seats )

G’day Brenten,
Could finish up being the best looking FX Station wagon amongst the few that have been done to date. Knowing you also have skills in the upholstery area I look forward to seeing what you do in that area. I imagine you started with an FX sedan ? How did you extend the roofline, did you use part of a panel vans roof ? Are you keeping the mechanicals original or can’t you help yourself? 😉😉

Yes ST as Brenten said, all he has to do now is ….. everything else 🤪 It would be interesting to see what he does with the interior fit out and the mechanical modifications he has planned, shouldn’t take long to finish the job 😉

G’day Brenten,
How about giving the vintage vaners a glimpse of the Wagon in its “very nice colour”.
And, By the way, will it have a tow bar? 😉

G’day Don R, I reckon your quickly put together intro is spot on. I wouldn’t worry about the blue line we can see through it no worries. As for Wayback Machine saving pages from the forum all I can find is that it saved some home pages 38 times between March 2013 and February 2023, some (most) of it I am not able to see, I might be doing something wrong. can’t say how long it will last. Long live Wayback Machine. Cobber.

Crikey Al, having trouble making this Wayback Machine do as it’s told because I basically don’t know what I’m doing, but thanks heaps for introducing me to it. Did manage to find the original 28 November 2002 home page web.archive.org/web/20021128083719/http://www.vintagecaravans.com/It’s sort of interesting to scroll through the index on the left of the page to be reminded of how the hobby was in 2002. August 28 2004 is the first time the ‘discussion Forum’ is announced on the home page. October 2012 shows the first appearance of a new home page. web.archive.org/web/20121024045815/http://vintagecaravans.com/Sorry Don R, I can’t work out how to post these images in the Hall of Fame 🤪 Cobber

Thanks Al, Never heard of that feature and it took me all day to make it work before I found, web.archive.org/web/20160516062416/http://vintagecaravans.com/introduction/The date on that home page says May 16 2016 but Mark and Jenny started the web site well before that because Jenny posted the welcome to the forum in July 2004 that started a couple years after the web site, as you have indicated around November 2002 ( I can’t find that post 🤪 ) I was hoping to see photos on the old ‘Forum member profiles’ page and maybe copy it and past it here but apparently the wayback machine didn’t archive the photos, do you know if that’s the end of the story, can’t get the photos ? Yes, Mark and Jenny started this forum eighteen and a half years ago in WA and those of us on the east coast couldn’t understand why we didn’t have a bigger following here at that time. There were a few car clubs that had some members with vintage caravans but it took this forum to get us talking to each other about our vintage caravans and displaying them.
The hobby gradually, quickly grew 😉
