G'day Al
Amongst all the good things you've done with this van saving that old ice box, and making it look beautiful, deserves a 10/10 I reckon
And then to find another use for Marconi track .... ah mate, wot can I say ?
The bloke you've known since you were born did a good job on the shelf bag too
You are an inspiration .......... fair dinkum.

G'day seeshell,
thanks for pointing out my error in claiming the yanks application was 1959 when in fact it was 1949.. I've altered the date in my post
The American one looks as though it could be retrofitted to a standard 'A' frame, that would have been handy.

G'day Andrew, That design around the wheel arch is really distinctive and is a Jennison trade mark, even though it wasn't used on all Jennisons all the time. I dare say somebody will have an idea when that particular livery was in vogue. I've often thought this model I have is based on a small Jennison because of the general shape and the wheel arch livery, maybe I should put a super large roof hatch on it to seal the deal , not everybody can be lucky enough to own a real Jennison you know Cobber.

G'day Stephen & Julie,
Yep, brings back memories for this old traveller.
I bought a new XK Falcon in 1961 and a mate and I went for a run from Sydney to Cairns in 1962.... no caravan, just a couple of tents or we slept (sort of) in the car.
Queensland in those days had narrow rough roads, if a car came towards you both cars dropped their near side wheels off the bitumen... we spent too much time in the pub at Ayr waiting for the floods to go down but, ended up getting a truck to pull us through the flooded road, not the smartest move because we got water inside the car and inside the diff.
A great adventure for a couple of young blokes but I wish I had of had a movie camera like the people in this video. Thanks for the link

Andrew!... fair crack o' the whip mate.
Many of us apparently thought 'God all mighty' was a bit pretentious, I'm inclined to feel the same about being labeled a 'Legend'.
I'd feel more comfortable if those of us who have exceeded 4000 posts were designated 'dribbler' .... although there probably is one of our number who doesn't deserve that distinctive title because he's managed to clock up 4000 posts with hardly any dribble..... NO ! I'm not talking about Reddo ( or me)
anyway.... this is a very good example of how you 'dribble' ..... rave on about a subject that has nothing to do with the thread you're on..but has it's own thread somewhere else

G'day hilldweller, So now you know how three four of us got to be 'LEGENDS' !.... banter you called it .... it got to be known as ... dribble Cobber.

G'day Andrew,
I can't think of anybody who would argue about the use of glass fibres and goo to give strength to the area you have applied it to.. looks really neat ...well on the way to another great restoration

G'day Andrew Reddo & Don,
She has been a pretty big restoration and I hope the new thread shows some of the detail.
As you noticed Don R the draw bar has been altered to accommodate an extension to the original, but with a quick release set-up that allows the extension to be removed so that the unique Don coupling can be displayed. The main objective I think was to extend the Don's rather short 'A' frame.

Has anybody been wondering what happened to the restoration project on this 'Don' caravan ?
Well.... after removing the fibro/ hardy plank that was on the off side of this van it was discovered that much of the frame would need replacing but.... more distressing was the fact that the entire side had bowed out just over an inch. There was also a fair amount of wood rot in the chassis under the van. All in all, after looking at it for a couple of years, I couldn't get enthused enough to take it on. I offered it to another forum member ( who shall remain nameless ) who never took delivery of it and cogitated about it for a further couple of years.
We knew of another forum member who had recently retired and in a supreme act of kindness we thought we would pass the van on to him to help him survive the stresses of retirement
I'm pleased to report we made a good choice. Colin, from the Colin & sue show, (you know him as the restorer of 'Miss Dorothy' recently told us he has finished the restoration and I had the opportunity to look at his work today.
I'll just post a couple of photos of the Don here and a new thread will be started under Colin& Sue's name with a more detailed description of the restoration process.
Looking along the side that was bowed out. Colin removed all the cupboards along that side and replaced the framework then pulled the side in to where it should be, Then replaced the cupboards to hold the side in where it should be.
All slot head screws were saved and new hinges were sourced from..... of all places, the big green shed
The rear lead light window was missing, Colin found a man who not only replaced that window but also re-conditioned all the other lead light windows. The unique Don light shades were also remade.
All rusted metal fittings were either replaced or re-chromed. A beautiful restoration.... congratulations Colin, a job well done.
As mentioned, a new more detailed thread will be started later.

G'day humpty
The closest I can get to a sensible number is.... PCD = 6.5 inches ...... or 166.7176 mm.
The distance between two adjacent studs is 98mm (centre to centre )
But don't forget.......... I'm the bloke who thought FX and FJ wheels were interchangeable
Cobber.
PS. Did a google.... This site says the PCD is 6.375 inches.

Sorry, just one more.
By a Queensland artist Jodi Cox a post card titled 'Circled Wagons'.
By-the-way,.... A director of Charnwood Publishing, the firm who market the items that started this exciting thread... cufflinks, key rings, egg cups, etc.etc.etc. has recently been convicted and gaoled in the UK for BREACH OF COPYRIGHT ........ so there, don't mess with images of poor old Driftwood, OK?
They have an on-line outlet for their items HERE

G'day Harry,
Getting close now mate..... will you be taking off on your maiden voyage this coming summer ? Do you intend 'doing The Continent', is that why you've put the door on the wrong side ... the interior of this van is incredible, regarding both the quality of your woodwork and your mates wood staining and pin-striping skills.
As Al mentioned there is a slight resemblance to our Supalite vans (externally) but I also see a likeness to a few English vans from the fifties... like the 'Bluebird' , but obviously you haven't tried to copy either of them, she will be a conversation starter once you start travelling.

Well done Don R,
What a great tradition to perpetuate, let's hope the caravan industry remembers the crowd drawing potential of vintage caravans for the seventieth anniversary and..... I expect you will put your hand up for that one too

A copy of a copy (hence the quality) of an article in the 1953 'Wheels' magazine of the 'safetee' caravan's display at the Melbourne Motor show, mostly doing a sales pitch for the canvas annex which I imagine was an optional extra.

Ol '36 had a fun day yesterday posing with the 'House of Quirky' and a group of happy young professionals doing a photo shoot for their 'Quirky Circus' fashion range that is exclusive to Myers Department Stores
Good thing was..... they came out to our place to do the shoot so we didn't have to go anywhere.
Not real sure how much of the caravan will feature in their photos but I got my priorities right aye ?

G'day Ken,

I see you're going there on the way to BH.... I'm going to meet the Victorian mob at Mildura.

Thanks for the photos of what looks to be a very good display of vintage caravans and 'stuff'..... I bet the organisers were happy with your efforts.
The type of comments you mentioned is what we always get at these displays, worth doing aye?

G'day Shelly,
Have a look at THIS SITE scroll down to page 32/33/34 and see if you can find the mould you're after.... If it's not there search through the entire catalogue.
On this forum we love seeing photos ... how about putting a photo of your van and the bit you're after in the 'general' section and somebody might be able to make suggestions to sort you out
