Good morning all I have decided to take the plunge and build a 10' bondwood van probably along the lines of the wanderer with a single settee up the front and dropped floor, I have a question for all you people with a bit more knowledge than myself on building the chassis what would you use c section ,rhs or a combination of both rhs for the axle carriers and c section for the other not so load bearing components and also what thickness would you use 3mm , 5mm or 6mm keeping in mind weight is a big factor for me as I will be towing it with an Austin a40 all your answers would be appreciated cheers Bo G'day Bo , it's good to see someone prepared to make an effort instead of buying "ready made cuties"..... ;D.....here's a pic that might help you with your choice of chassis materials.... ....it's a frame I did for one of our old vans. It's built from 50mm rhs ( box section for the uninitiated) and is a simple perimeter frame and integral drawbar with mounting points for the springs and a couple of crossmembers in the middle to support a water tank ( and the floor of course). This one is out of 3mm wall , but if you're concerned about weight then you can get a lighter section again, from memory about 2.5mm . I favour rhs over angle or C section as it has greater load capacity and far greater rigidity than equivalent size channel or angle which will twist in service quite easily. It also gives you 2 flat sides to work with so welding on mounts, etc is easier and cleaner than working and welding into a corner. Good luck with the project, Colin.

Hiya, a bent axle isn't necessarily a big drama , find a truck axle alignment business and have them straighten it or at least view it to see if it's repairable before you pronounce it dead ;D. cheers, Col.

Hi Alex, there's company in Jersey Rd Bayswater that has most types of ply, think they're called Plyboard Distibutors from memory ( or close to it ;D).....anyway ,they're almost opposite the Mail Center so it's easy enough to find them. With the thickness , carefully dismantle the sections you're going to do the work on and you'll be able to measure what you have, then replace it with the same thickness. It is possible to have the sheets "scarfed " together to form a larger section, Sportsman1 had this done a little while ago and could give you some directions in that respect ( except he's off touring soon).....
We have an original Don here , so if you ever need to check anything out you're welcome to come and have a look ,cheers, Colin and Kris.....

Hi Trish, you'll probably find it easiest to buy your tyres through Antique Tyres in West Heidelberg and have them sent to you ,then get them fitted at your local tyre service. 6.00x 16's are not something that's readily available at general tyre services anymore.....also, replace the tubes as well, cheers, Col.

The crapper would make a great esky.... Nice handle .. and.... somewhere to sit while having a beer..... Just gotta make sure ya don't start thinkin about what has been through it in the past. With a bit of imagination those meat safes can be used for purposes other than storing meat in too... If you where closer to Newy I would have been interested in the lino for the Supalite. Not ta worry ... the old carpet in there is just the shot in the winter time. That Hitch is a steal at $350 .. and very much sought after Cheers Reddo ....Hiya Reddo, I though you'd be a cert for the dunny....you're always telling me you're too poor to have a pot to piss in.... ;D ;D....here's your big chance!.... ;D ;D PS....it hasn't got any "residual" like that ships dunny we looked at in that old blokes museum outside of Lithgow.....

Hi ,we have the same hinges in our Hawthorn van , took them down to the chrome plater and had them redone ,cost us about $7 each this time last year. Figure it's money well spent and nothing else looks as good as fresh chrome. You can buy new hinges in a similar pattern from places like Bunnings , but they are rubbish and all you'd be doing is throwing money away......

I was wondering if anyone out there has got any 60s Lino tiles that could be reused.? My 63 millard Florida has original Lino tiled floor but some are damaged Would look at anything The majority is a off white with a blue fleck then there are random yellow ones and green ones as well I have checked out the thread on Lino and may have to go new but the van is in such good original shape inside I would love to keep it totally authentic. Ps they are around 9" square ( standard for that era) Cheers Andrew ....yep,we have a few dozen that we pulled out of an old house a few years back. I'll take some pics today and put them on....see if you like them ,cheers, Col.

model T front axle with flat bar locking the wheels in the straight position & they’re not welded Interesting that JBJ said after we saw it that we could put spoked wheels on it, but these are the current wheels with at least 1 light truck tyre, 650-16. What do you think they are Col? Hiya Cathy and Rob (the silent one ;D).......can't help you on the wheel ID......but they're not Ford, nor is the axle. T Model ( and later) all had just a single spring across the top of the axle mounted on pins through the axle itself......could be an early Chevy or similar, the wheel pattern looks more Chev-like than anything common to that era, but it's hard to say from pics. If you want to trace the outline of the studs onto a piece of paper once you get the wheels off and post it down here ,I'll see what it matches for you. Congrats on an amazing find......

Thanks but I don't fill the cap with grease. I wonder if I should fit the dust seals with the lip to the outside so any pressure can escape? ....not unless you want the grease to go out there too..... ;D.....I'd be having a long hard look at the hubs , there must be a simple reason why you're spitting dust caps....maybe the hub is "bellmouthed" at the end?. It's not a common occurence ,so to lose as many as you have means something is amiss in the mounting area......good luck with it,Col.
