Well there you go....there were no identification plates etc on mine either..NOTHING! Except just recently I discovered the elusive welded three digits - 565 hidden on the underside of the strut/channel. That was after I had taken the spare wheel off front & crawled underneath to wire brush the chassis...geez...talk about not wanting anyone to find it in a hurry....was happy to find it however. The only thing that throws everyone as to what the van actually is, is the sliding over head cupboards...but they are original as there are no marks of hinges having ever been there! One day we will figure it out....like to think it is a 1958-1960 FRANKLIN! J

Thank you! I had to work with the ugly grey laminate the prev. owner put in. One day I will get the courage to cut up & old mottled red or grey 50's table and replace it all! The walls were also grey with pink & lace curtains.. Urrgh! Our son dubbed it "the morgue" when he first saw it unmolested! The off white walls & red have freshened it up.....and the vintage fabric I found and made up were perfect....so...go for red trub73....I am happy with it. J

Hello there...yes I think it is but not too sure....no-one seems to know! Least of all me. Has had a lot of mod's done to it. I think it was recladded with alum at front & rear. The roof is flat/smooth alum however. I am a complete novice and didn't want to start pulling the alum off....would not know where to begin! But I took a couple of sides vents off to disconnect the old non working 3 way fridge & throw away and discovered the orig paint underneath.....but I am convinced it is an early FRANKLIN going by for photo's Al kindly sent thru. Have you got one also? J

Managed a few more photo's of "sassy-gabby" This is the rear bed shot, now with the bed frame back in place.... This is a toaster/oven put in by prev owner....too much for me to remove and repair under cupboard so may slide in a small microwave...I can hear groans...but really guys...there is a huge cutout! This is the stove before being cleaned... This is the stove now...not perfect but.... The overall new painted cupboards..... More photo's when she is completed....still deciding on lino!!!!!!

Well here is my vv...not quite complete...in a difficult position to take a proper side on shot. Will when we move her for rego soon....The original col of van was a flesh colour (pinkish beige) with an olive green one stripe down sides! May do these col’s when she needs a new coat...the inside was buff yellow, bright green, pink & cream with yellow/grey tiles. The laminate has all been changed by prev. Owner which is a shame just had to work with what was there................looking for old laminate table red/grey to replace it all! The wheel arch has been highlighted with this mottled alum and follows the arch.... Before shot to refresh your memories..................... And now she looks like this......... Al...you were correct....scrub, scrub, scrub....4 days later, blackened fingers, sore muscles & a big smile! The alum was painted with silver frost, then coated with a laquer & lots of grease etc. I used everything I could lay my hands on & eventually used paint stripper & 2 packs of soapy jex. Sol was good as a final polish.....A little dent here and there adds to the character.....and yes...that is a chrome rod the prev. Owner put in am assuming to hold the sliding shelf (that does go over stove) a TV as there is an antenna pt & power pts above! “The boy” says it stays as he is a motorsport/motorbike grand prix watcher! You can see the original lift up storage which is now under the bed frame....bit tricky to get too but could be handy. The name COULTON is written in large letters in grey lead pencil under lid. The near on full length mirror has “gabby” inscribed at top...so the name stays.. I decided to add sassy...”sassy gabby”. And yes....the prev owner put in a few mod cons...the rear window (was broken apparently) may replace to the original oval shape one day....the ugly light fitting (about to be replaced!....and set of speakers which when removed leaves whopping holes so they stay unfortunately cause I am NOT a carpenter! The fan...welll...have my eye on a little retro model....removed a big heavy ugly laminated shelf from front of rear window which has opened it all up....why? why? Why? I have not posted a pic of dining area as am awaiting new cushions etc....have to leave something to take a shot of when finally finished............................................pretty close though...... The chassis number I found after looking, looking for simply ages.....after taking the spare wheel off to start wire brushing down the chassis, there it was, it was hidden from view....guess I was looking in all the wrong places! Anywho...that’s it for the mo....when it is completed...I will post some more shots...till then thanks for taking the time to look & a huge thanks to those of you who have helped me out with questions that I had whilst doing this reno...I know you must tire of inane questions but without your knowledge novices like me would still be literally scratching our heads! So thanks a trillion! Cheers J

After lamenting for ages I could not find a chassis # on the vv...decided on the w/end that perhaps I should start wire brushing the chassis! That is a revolting, dirty, hard yakka job that will not be perfect but close! Worse than pulling up & chipping fluffy carpet & tiles from the floor! Wellll... actually polishing the alum around the stove was worse...however, managed to take the spare wheel off that I can tell you was stuck fast with the biggest rusted on wing nut ever! Basically on my belly scrubbing, choking on rust dust & forever wary of spiders (hate them) I scrubbed under one of the strut things and actually had to look twice....there under the dirt/rust was a #! Now, it is not your usual nice pretty stamped official # but am assuming it was enough to have the vv registered. It has been welded onto the inside strut & hidden from view especially when the spare was on! 565 quite large & very well done! What I am wondering, can I use this # to register do you think or is that pushing it a little for the officialdom to actually get on his/her knees to sight it? Could be amusing watching on... ;D ;DI am convinced the vv is a Franklin but I can't get a proper shot to take photo until it is towed from it's position! There is also BHP WA on the strut. Guess that just means thats where the steel came from to make chassis!? Any comments/thoughts/all over it? I am getting that way.....so close to completion it's annoying! Cheers Jennie

Ummmmmmm....yep can relate to all of the above! Painted doors and frames and jambs etc...I even measured everything!!!!!!!!!! Would not fit any way we turned it. Hatch too small, windows, forget it! Ended up by stripping down the fridge and taking jambs off! It only just squeezed thru scratching all my hard work... paintbrush out again! Now on ebay there happens to be this very cool retro look, brand new bar fridge....if ours did not fit with the effort I put into stripping it down, I was going to BUY IT!!!!! Cause it was smaller than the one I have put in and VERY reasonably priced! AND I love the look of it for vv's! (Was a little peeved I managed to maneuver it in. Haven't plugged it in yet.... so just maybe.......) Why are these old van doorways so narrow? Good luck Jennie

Hello Dave, Q1. Have you still got the annex for sale? Q2. Would it fit a 12ft Franklin or am I way off? It has the rail feeder at the top and chrome mac clips. Sorry really don't know much about this subject as you can tell! Cheers Jennie

Hello Seeshell I can remember my Dad salvaging an old laminex table and taking the edging off it for just the purpose you are wanting....(it was for a table in his boat though!) He found the table at the tip (ahhh recycling centre I believe these are called nowadays) It had only three legs and the laminex was peeled and stained, but the alum surround was in pretty good nick! Exactly the same as you have described. (And the old table was free back then!) Maybe keeping an eye out when next at the recycling centre? One man's trash is another's treasure!....Jen

Thanks guys....Now Al, I would like to think the van is pre 1959 or thereabouts! AND I have a sneaking suspicion that you just maybe that "Franklin freak" I was referring too....please forgive me. I love this "franklin" van so I guess I am right up there with you! "The boy" seems to think the chassis is older than the hitch! He has actually wandered down to the van (work is manic for him, so does not have much time to spare) and I sweet talked him into taking a look! Hence no chassis # that we can find. He agrees with you guys the small #'s that I found are to do with the actual hitch/towball thing! l can't get the camera to work to take some pics...but I am onto it! I am thinking JBJ that the inspectors in Melb will want the #'s stamped onto the chassis as I have been told where we will register the van, they are VERY pedantic about things like that....ho hum! By the way it has holden hub caps on the wheels. The ones with the black lion with his paw on what I presume is a tyre. Although the spare tyre is all in silver. Silver rims..does that mean anything? Cheers Jennie

Seem to keep missing you....work gets in the way! The alum flashing follows the line of the arc of the wheel so you don't have to crawl under the old girl! I did that for you! Definitely slants forward. I persisted in looking for a chassis # and the only odd # I can find is "ASD 16" on one section of the hitch and ASD 18 on the actual towball hitch....is this it? The other # is related to weight in kilo's. Which to me indicates it could be a whole new drawbar thing! I need a # to re-register the van don't I? Cheers Jennie

Hello Al..........I'm ducking for cover. Right behind you! I don't know if I can take a shot without the alum covering..it actually follows the line of the arch and it slants forward...will give it a go just for you. If I can work out how to get it off without damaging it. J

PS Al - had a quick look at the link "wayfarer again"...to refresh my memory of the original photos I took and came to the conclusion along with not being an electrician or car[enter I am NOT a photographer! Those photo's are dodgy to say the least. I will take a proper side shot of the shape of van and hopefully you will get a better understanding why I think it is a Franklin that has been updated......J

Hello Al Weelll, The interior is 95% identical......the wheel arches do slope forward but have an aluminum flashing added....the seats identical but prev owner has put in a new heavy poxy table. You are correct...there has been a small amount of modifications done to the inside, not by me. No shelf above the sink because the prev owner put in new laminate which is a flat ugly grey and have done the table in the same! Leaving that for the moment as it is ok....for NOW. Till I find a large kitchen red or grey 50's speckled table and will modify it! The shelf I would say was removed because of replacement of laminate above sink and they have wired in a toaster/oven thingy under the overhead cupboard over the draining side of the sink! Leaving that also, cause I am no electrician/carpenter and they cut a whopping big pce out of under the cupboard to accommodate it....AND all the cupboard doors are the same PINK in colour and the cupboards under sink have the same hinges as in your photo! The wardrobe door on mine has a full length mirror with the name "gabby" inscribed at the top! Same ceiling colour and pattern....it has a plastic/bakelite pump which I have repaired, thanks to you knowledgeable guys and it works!! Mine has a little round sink. FALKS two burner stove, works a treat. 3 in 1 fridge that does not work...will replace this. They have added on a shelf area next to stove presumably to place a TV as there is an antenna outlet plug above. Originally it had a couch only at rear. Still has the original hinged storage area but has been modified to accommodate a double bed which is now partly a fixture....that is OK as not particularly fussed about cramming a 6ft "the boy" onto a single front bed!!! Besides making it up each night does not appeal. The shape honestly is identical to the 1959er except we have no outside light near door. I can just make out a single stripe on bondwood sides but it now has two stripes in navy. It is in really excellent condition both inside and out.....bit of a mystery van. Originally was purchased thru Morwell caravans and serviced by them. So it can't be a home-made job as the sticker is still on the front of van along with an old rego label. I did find a name under the rear couch hinged seat with the name COULTON in pencil! The only other difference is the two front cupboard doors above table are separate in your photo. Mine has one long sliding both front and rear. The fluro light and little round silver light are the reverse in my van but the same! There is also a round silver light at rear. Oh something else, the rear window has been replaced and is now square but shall have that put back to the original shape at some stage. It's a mystery that I would like to solve but I think it never will! Have nearly finished painting so shall post some pics asap! Sorry about calling the Franklin member a freak....rules are meant to be broken hey! Cheers from a baffled VV owner.... Jennie
