Hi there Gordon! So sorry to post this on the "open" forum but can't seem to email you! Stupid computers. Okey Dokey...slow & steady she goes with the drilling! Firstly I shall try the re-gluing/wire trick, then, fill the tank and see if the "sloppiness" is my imagination, then crawl under the sink and unscrew the hose and check the washer! Then scream... If all the above fails I will purchase the pump/tap from Dave who has one. (What a sweetheart!) The next step will be to check the fridge carefully. Visions of the "elvis" photo haunts me. Being blown out the door doesn't appeal to my sense of humour...kind regards Jennie

Ooooo thank you, thank you Dave! Might need to take you up on that as looking at it and having a little play with it, it seems quite fragile...I will reglue the pce (you can see it in the photo just sticking up in the photo at the top!) Would not be so bad except it is right where the screw/nut meets to hold the shaft. I will cross my fingers and see how the repair goes...but put my name on that spare pump you have Dave...have a feeling the whole pump is tired!!! Won't be able to do a lot until this w/end when I can see what I am doing under the sink! Regards Jennie

Another shining knight! - sounds simple enough Gordon - did I mention I am pretty handy with an electric drill as well!! What could possibly go wrong? "The boy's attitude (husband really)" haven't any spare time...you can do this...ummmmm...having self doubts the more I dismantle things!!! But anywho - shall give it a go - maybe I will ask at a hardware store about the adhesive??? Getting under the sink is a worry - good thing I am small! Thank you very much for your help/advice guys - shall let you know the outcome!
Guess when it is all complete & "Sassy" is ready for her first trip - I will step back with a HUGE smile and say "I actually did it!!!" Phew!

Cobber - my knight in shining armour! I keep looking at it whilst scrubbing/dismantling things and have even stood with the spanner in my hand but don't know where to begin! After hand sawing the double bed frame in four pce's to get it out I was tempted to attack the sink lever with the saw - but NO I refrained! Ummm...make up a lever eh? So I fire up the barby place an old pot on top and dismantle the "little nipper" outer bakelite case of the radio that was destined for the vv and do a melt down??? Problem is the tap is cream and the "nipper" is red...mmmm. I will try the superglue & thin (fuse wire?) you have suggested and hold my breath! Hoping I don't stick my fingers to it! But how do I know what to do if this is successful in getting it to work? It actually levers up and down but seems a bit ummm...how do I explain...slack, wobbly, loose, sloppy - with no suction?? Does this make sense??? A thought! Probably should put some water in the tank - Der! Would that alter the feel of it? Would it have a seal inside that is perhaps perished? Should I try and dismantle it? Spray a little WD40 on the metal pce?? I am pretty good with a spanner/screwdriver!! Or another thought... the "boy" has a shed full of motorbikes -I could sneak in when he is at work... think he would miss a brake/clutch lever off the MV??? Thank goodness there is no wood rot - far out - that would really have me stamping my foot & scratching my head!!! So many questions I know, I know...

Hello - hoping some-one will advise me on how to fix the bakelite sink lever. It has a pce that has cracked thru and needs re-gluing near a screw at the top that attaches to the actual pump lever....what do I use? A plastic adhesive? How the devil do I pull it to pce's to clean and get it operational again? ? Where do I begin...grrr...Or is it simpler to replace it with a new one? Have had a look on site but can't find anything on levers/taps! Most likely not looking in the right places...sorry! It is rather cute and would like to keep it if I can. The sink has "MIRRA" engraved on the front....There is a photo of it under "Wayfarer again..." in Member's site. Thanks to Dave I think we have determined it is really a "Franklin"...date??? No idea. I did find a name at last in the back pull up cavity - COLTMAN am assuming it is the builder's name....any info and help would be appreciated.....J

Hello there Ray - it is lovely inside...much nicer than ours!!! But exactly the same layout. Cupbd's have a slightly different layout. We have overheads over the table. Our little thing has had alterations over time inside and no doubt outside. Don't want to go there (outside) by peeling back aluminium urrrgh....bad enough on the inside but I am not that fanatical as some on originality...it has to be comfortable and functional as she will be used frequently!!! It is in excellent cond on the outside with no sign of rot - thank goodness. Will do a paint makeover on inside and turf a few mod fittings. One has to stay (a toaster/oven) as they have cut a great hole in the cupbd area. Not a carpenter to fix that problem! Need a new fridge first. Original 3 way a no goer we found out today. Oh the dilemma of paintwork! Ours has had several paint jobs on the inside. The last one being grey and pink urrgh...and when they painted, they went over everything! So no nice wood anywhere. Have started scrubbing inside and have used everything I could lay my hands on. Alum windows suck! Have spent the majority of my time jexing them with Bright Lite, Autosol, silvo & a paste metal cleaner. Will never be perfect as they were so pitted and crusty! But look 200% to what they were. They even have a shine to them. Fly screens fit over them so I was wondering why I was being so fussy!!!! At least the cabbage smell has disappeared. Yours looks in fantastic cond on inside. Keep the photos up with yr resto. Love that tow car! Cheers Jennie

Nice badge! Ours has absolutely nothing to indicate what it is...but not a wayfarer that's for sure. In my heart I think it is a Franklin...my head wants it to be a wayfarer. Have started to scrub out interior ready for painting. Years of grime, food & grease around the windows etc had me pulling out every cleaner I could lay my hands on. Discovered an extractor fan above stove - now that's not original! The fridge doesn't work but kinda thought that may be the case. The toaster thingy looks like it's gonna have to stay. To pull it out will leave a cut out big enough to fit a hydro plant. They have cut into the overhead cupb'ds/surrounds etc and I am not a carpenter to tackle that. The only bonus is, it works! Hate the sliding cupbd's & am thinking of redoing these so they open up or down...can't be that hard to change....well may be. I did have a chuckle as I unscrewed the 12th brass cup hooks. They were everywhere so I have a few holes to fill. Discovered the original col scheme...yellow, cream, green & light grey. Stuck fluffy carpet over very pretty lino of yellow greys blue so now red that I had in mind is out the door! How on earth do you pull up carpet that has been stuck with what seems like super glue? Can't budge it. Thinking of a blow torch...mmmm...van not insured yet, better not! Can't wait to see pic's of your wayfarer interior. Keeps the incentive there for the rest of us...I love your van so keep us posted...Jennie

Dave...at last I can see your '59 wayfarer and it is gorgeous! What is the interior like? I can see the difference now in the wayfarer and franklin's! Yours is a lovely shape... Ours is definitely the same shape as Ray's (But we love ours too - don't we Ray?)...could ours also be a '59 do you think?? The only difference I can see is the aluminum on Ray's appears flat - ours has a diamond pattern and has three ridges together, running intermittently across it...perhaps it was replaced. Also, there is a light (indicator's maybe) in rubber holders (perished a little) that stick out on top of sides! We have two stripes down sides - not one & alum over wheel arches, other than that it is identical to Ray's new acquistion...Jennie

It looks like ours!!! Isn't it sweet? How long is it? Ours is a 12 footer. I am still in feet - can't get my head around metric!!! The pressed tin inside (from prev owner's pic's of yours) looks like the same as ours! We have it on the roof only. We have come to the conclusion after seeing your rear window - ours has been replaced (must have been broken) and they did this split window held in with strips of "H" gage plastic...UGLY! Doesn't leak so shall replace it to look like yours at some stage!!!! We have a bakelite lever for sink (bottom of sink is round & has the original plug - it's tiny) and a 3 way fridge that looks dodgy - haven't plugged it in yet! Ours is perfect on the outside and will be scrubbing interior also, then painting soon...Anyhow congratulations - it is only the 2nd Franklin I have seen (besides ours) on this site. If yours is dated 1959 - ours must be around this era also! Thanks for knowing the age of yours - we had no idea regarding age of ours!! We thought it was a Wayfarer 1965! Dave figured it out for us!!....Regards Jennie

Hello Mark I am new to the sport of vintage vans also - so come on board!!! Soooo envious you scored an annexe with your van....have been searching for one myself for our 12 footer! Started to scrub years of grime and grease from my recent purchase & have realised it is going to take quite some time. After scrubbing for 3 hrs solid (my arm aches to prove it) there are things which will just have to be turfed.....the pink curtains and mouldy net curtains were the first things that got turfed out the door...enjoy your van as I know we will...eventually!

Lucky you Kylie - how cool! Yes, I am starting to think outside the square - may have to scour the garage sale scene myself. Plenty of them up here in the hills....patience is a virtue so they tell me! Life gets in the way also - most times we work 6 days a week - but like you have done shall have to make time!!! I am after an annexe (old canvas striped version- yes even if it has that old musty smell I guess/preferably NOT) with wood poles etc to fit a 12 foot van - thought the van was a wayfarer but it could be a franklin....ALSO - some old retro canvas striped deck chairs & a red, navy, yellow or green top folding card table! ANYONE have something hidden in the deep dark depths of their shed....? We are in Sassafras Victoria so Melb. area would be best. Would relieve you of the above items (if the price is right) by Nov cup w/end or earlier if you like...hopefully our first trip in our new/freshly restored vintage (?!) van - thanks for looking in your sheds - I know they are out there somewhere - regards Jennie ;D

PS - I did see that an emblem or plate - rectangular in shape at the front (above window) may have been removed as there appears to be eight or so holes filled with a filler? Mmmmmm Jen

Hummmm, yes like removing wallpaper! Bit scared of those things - did try using one of those and burnt the plaster that had us gasping for air...but shall try again. I saw the Franklin pic #2 1960-62 DHL site and it all looks so similar to ours in shape, the vent placement etc...and it was 12 footer. Plus the windows look the same. Damn it...it was identical!! Wish there were interior shots somewhere on the site...I have scoured the Members site but old Franklin's are few and far between it seems. I had a look on the draw bar for some numbers but really don't know what I am looking for. Have a feeling it is a replacement one ? When did kg come in? J

Hello Dave - you could be spot on as I have gone through the DHL and am not convinced it is a wayfarer! I have found nothing in the way of a sticker, emblem, plate or anything. The rego label simply says caravan last registered in 1991. Could it be home built?? I went thru everything this morning and discovered the winder for the legs AND the spanner thingy for the wheels plus chocks of wood to rest the legs on hidden in a cavity...at least we can enter it safely without it toppling down the embankment! When you open the sliding cupb'ds overhead, they are not lined and you can see the alum which goes over the roof. So there is nothing under the aluminum roof as we may have thought earlier. I am guessing you are right and it is a franklin...it was sold to the young couple from a caravan dealer in Hallam 3-4 months ago. They towed it to their house and never stepped foot in it, as a wayfarer 1965 model...would be nice to know what we have but we love it anyway...thinking of repainting the wood sides - or is it masonite(?) and putting new splash of colour (red) on the outside but have no idea if this would be the correct thing to do...guess I am going to have to do some ground work on the FRANKLIN now! The two blue stripes down the sides are not painted but are a decal (computer strip?) of some kind which suggests it was an add on later! Not looking forward to trying to get that off! Perhaps I should leave it there. No, won't match the tow car when we get it...Thank you for your time in looking Dave...really appreciate it. I wonder what age it could be then? It has a few mod cons (a toaster oven thingy, a small fan and two ugly reading lights and I think the table is a new addition as the leg/stand is quite chunky and the laminex thru out is a little modern in colour) but it really is in good nick as it is...just needs a scrub to get rid of that "cabbage" smell! Guess it is back to the drawing board...no wonder I never get anything done around the house! But I much prefer the van restoration/homework...as opposed to washing, ironing,vacuuming...Stay well...Kind regards J

Funny har har....I fit in the double bed - being short of statue! Russell....well he will struggle! Think how cosy it will be in winter.......ummm yeah...and a stinker in summer!!! May have to review the bed situation......... As for the badge or sticker - can't find one! That's why I am wondering is it really a wayfarer? ? Or a look alike! Took a pic of the winder if anyone knows where we can find one....Dave you mentioned about J alum strips/moulds for windows....am I on the right track about them? Would like to put a full perspex pce in rear window. The rubber surround I have figured isn't too difficult to source. Rolling up sleeves and getting started on it on the w/end. YOU JUST WAIT YOU LOT FOR THE END RESULT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Hee heeeeee. Also, on the look out for an annex, (12ft) to fit the van and a couple of deck chairs and a red top wooden fold card table also!!! Anyone??? In no hurry... just yet!
