Hey koala, sutcac didn't move his wallet, the weighbridge was free!!! The final weight doesn't surprise me one bit, when you consider what you did to that van sutcac. How many litres of paint is on the van? Even at the same weight as water (and paint would be heavier) there's probably an extra 100 kg added by paint and fibreglass filler alone. You've increased you water weight by double! It soon adds up - a good lesson for us all!!!

Perhaps a word of caution to people using treated timber when replacing rotted framing. There are various grades of treated timber, and only some is of structural grading. But using a structural grade on a house frame is quite different to using it for caravan framing. The treating process is pretty harsh on wood and tends to make it brittle and unable to flex as well and kiln dried timber. Caravans undergo a lot of flex, and any help you can give to allow that to happen, the longer your van will last. It think this is why caravan builders don't use treated wood and stick to more flexible kiln dried timber.

Hey sutcac, I reckon your rig will come in well over the tonne, if you put it on a weighbridge, in which case, like the others already said, it's dicey!!

Thank you Cobber, price added to the original post. Would be a good present for Yvonne. Koala I agree Koala About time that long-suffering lady had some creature comforts. You'd really earn some brownie points getting her one of these modern vans, cobber

For someone that started off his vintage caravanning in a Teardrop, albeit an overweight one, you're certainly making sure you have all creature comforts in your old age, Koala!!! At least another resto will stop you from chasing after women Or will it? You do good work, so am looking forward to following this one and enjoying your labours as much as I did the last one.

Seems like you need to search out the Bunnings stores that sell meranti. Their super stores might be the better place to go. I was at Bunnings Forster (NSW) today and they had meranti there.

Of course Mr DonR, it could also be that this van was named Shiralee, because it reminded the owner of the movie by the same name. It first came out in 1957 as a British production, which could be around the time of this van. I looked up the word's meaning and Oxford dictionary says it means "a bundle of personal belongings or blankets carried by a tramp."out on the road with my shiralee""

The Big Green Shed still sells meranti.
I was talking to the owner of a local caravan sales yard who does a thriving business. He told me that the majority of caravans are now being built from meranti again, as the aluminium framed ones didn't last as well. Go figure - the industry does a complete circle. The only Australian brand still using aluminium frames is a WA company. They always have to be different!!!!!!

An interesting amount of research you've been hiding Mr DonR!!! Not sure if you also noticed in the Qld Caravan Centre Ad, the mention of an Aristocrat 16? or 18ft Lantern roof advertised for sale. This is a newie to me, as I thought that we only had the Glen Lantern roof caravan. Don't mean to hijack the thread here, but can some mention of this van also go under the Aristocrat DHL section? Who knows, it might elicit a magical find!
Here's a thought - was Humpty2's Jemima (?) perhaps based on the Aristocrat, or even WAS it one??? Maybe Humpty2 could comment. Or have you found an ID for the yellow and white van here:http://vintagecaravans.proboards.com/thread/1995?page=1 in the 1940's caravan section of DHL???

10 Rules for dating a Sunliner
1. Make sure her fobbergrass is highly polished and you can see a reflection of your face in it 2. Check her bearings to make sure she runs smoothly and will go the distance. 3. Make sure fridge and freezer are full of consumables, both solid and liquid. 4, Make sure Ipod has enough music that suits all occasions. 5. Make sure all necessary attachments between her and your towcar are compatible and in working order 6. Don't go too far on a first date, things could go wrong and you'd be lost in the middle of nowhere! 7. Have plenty of stops along the way to get to know her quirks and idiosyncrasies 8. If stopping overnight, check that all jacks are in the "down" position. 9. In the morning, don't forget to make the bed, so that she presents well to any early visitors. 10.Don't get too hung up about how old she is, cos you know she's probably older than you!
Apart from that, I have no idea! You'll have to wait till a Sunliner owner comes along!

What would that sign be worth if it had a caravan attached to it!!! Probably more than portholes with wrecked caravans!!!!!!! Going out on a very skinny limb here DonR, but could there have been a connection with Trail-a-home? ?

I think the Hawthorne caravans are supposed to have full standing head height!!!! An imaginative way to utilise a chassis and an excellent finish. There are shades of Koala's TD as well as former member Reddo's build, especially that front bay window> I'm sure you'll enjoy using it.

I know of a couple of vans that were rebuilt from thee chassis, but to my memory, they had broken bit os walls etc to use as templates. Personally, I would frame the badges and plates as a dedication to the van and set up the sink as a fish cleaning point outside the garage!!!

I don't know what that tape is called, but I had it on the edges of the Rowvan I restored and replaced it with 50mm fibreglass tape and feathered it. It also had masonite walls and it worked well.

Welcome to the forum furness. That's a great barn find! Vans that have been protected to some extent are always better to fix than paddock finds. I notice what appears to be water damage to the ceiling. Is that right? Is the roof the old caneite with calico cover?
If you're planning to replace that roof, I recommend that you paint the framing while the roof is off and also the underside of the caneite which will become the new ceiling, before putting it together again. Saves a lot of labour trying to do a good paint cutting job if left till later.
Good luck with the resto
