This site is for vintage caravans (pre 1970's) so don't be surprised. Here is a link to the classic caravans (post 1970 to early 80's) although there doesn't seem to be much current activity on it. ditzygypsy.proboards.com/After that you'll need to do wider searching. Remember, the internet does not have answers to everything.

Hi Mark. One of the rules of this forum is that we don't discuss prices because it causes too much strife. From what you described it sound like it would be hard sight unseen without any pics anyway. Maybe post some photos with a notional price and see what interest is generated.

A house made from three large containers sold for $1.7million up in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, so tell your partner not to belittle containers! It's a whole growth industry and will outlive a bondwood caravan in the open. Sure, place the ad on this site too. It's got good potential for a restorer.

Welcome to the forum.
It really sounds like you have a problem that can't really be solved without seeing what you are talking about. If it come to that you may need to refer it to someone who has experience with this sort of problem. Hopefully member hughdeany may see this thread and comment on it. He has many years of experience in the caravan industry.

Why no weigh up the cost of a used container vs fixing the van. If you can get a container onto the block you can always work on the van at your leisure.

There's really no shortcut to fixing a caravan.
The first thing in your case is to decide what you want to do with the van - as a man-cave or touring van - two totally different things. Restoring a caravan is a bit like owning a boat - they are both holes into which you pour more money than you planned for.
If you want to use this as a touring van you really need to start from the wheels up and make sure your running gear is working. Check for rust and make sure brakes work. As a man-cave, level it off and start waterproofing the roof before lining.

Welcome to the forum.
The short answer is don't!
Bondwood caravans are not really designed to stay out in the open permanently, especially on a bush block where they would get even less care. Caravan covers are also not a good long-term solution, because the timber sweats underneath the cover and when it's windy, the material chafes the woodwork bare. With that in mind, it really doesn't sound like your project is worth undertaking, unless it's a very rare van. If that were the case, it really should be under solid cover.

Hi All when I put Thistle-Doo over the weighbridge, the tow-ball weight was a bit more than I expected. A big part of the reason for that seems to be because, having been a camper, the axle is set back further than an ordinary trailer. The rig sits quite well when towed, but I thought I'd try to redistribute the weight a bit more. So this week I moved the toolbox from the front drawbar frame to the rear. Fitted a couple of 40mm gal box steel and moved the box from where shown here: to its new position here:

I agree with gypsy10. Weighbridge operators weigh and don't officially give the info you speak of. That's not their role.

ATM is the total weight when fully loaded for going away, incl water, food and clothes. That's what you need to know for rego purposes. You also need to have that figure to establish if your vehicle can legally tow the van. Take the fully loaded van to the weighbridge rather than an empty one. At the same time ask them to work out the ball weight. That weight also tells you if your tow vehicle is correct

Hi all, wondering 🤔 if anyone would know the weight of a van like this. Have very similar van, curious to know for towing purposes. Weights vary too much to guesstimate. Spend $50 and take it to a weighbridge. CT

If you're at all handy, why not replace the axle with a braked kit yourself? Couplemate here in Brisbane sell them for between $622 and $878 for a 45mm square axle with electric drum brakes. Not sure about freight, but would think you could still land it for under $1000. At your asking price of the caravan (lovely unit by the bye), a potential buyer might baulk because they know they would have to add brakes. I replaced the hubs on my Thistle-Doo (which meant taking the whole axle off) and rewired everything while I was at it, and it isn't THAT difficult. I replaced the whole axle on Cino Vardo from unbraked to braked as well, because like you, when the build was finished, she was overweight for unbraked trailers. The service I got from this company was second to none! www.couplemate.com.au/trailer-caravan-axles/45mm-square-axles/45mm-square-electric-brake-axle-kit/

Hi and congrats on finding another Gypsy - they're getting harder to find.
Finding parts is always a problem, but remember this, apart from specific parts like ID badges, parts for most caravans are pretty generic, or you may even have to build/make it yourself. Benchtop Laminex and flooring often is the most difficult to source, but this site does have leads on such things in the Technical section. A broad request such as you've made is also not very helpful. You do need to be more specific on what you are looking for, because someone with a different brand of caravan may have what you need.
Remember always, that with restoring a caravan, it's not only the destination, but the journey of how you get there.
