Hi all, Well here folks we finally have the begining of a new journey, with a new project, but with Australia’s oldest known full size caravan. We’ve decided on naming her Lil Hampton since she was born & bred in Little Hampton SA, built by the well known Childs family over an 8 month period & finished in 1936. I’ll post more history as it comes to hand but meanwhile please enjoy our journey with us. Well a couple of weeks ago Surf Tragic, offered to collect & deliver Lil Hampton to our front door which I’am still extremely grateful for. (thats him on the right with his trusty companion Steve) I knew Lil Hampton would provide some challenges for us, but i didn’t think it would begin with trying to fit her in the garage! So on Monday of the long weekend we knocked 4 X 2 rows of bricks of the top of the garage after removing the roller door! After removing the first row, we removed the steel angle supporting the roof, chiseled out the mortar between the top two rows of bricks, then reused the steel in between this gap. Then we were able to remove the second steel angle support & the final four rows of bricks, easy – NOT!!! Also a couple of hours spent pulling the extensive shelving down the side, was that busy didn’t have time for pics but Kaz got these one’s at tea time. Finally rebricked the pillars where the steel angle came out & put the roller door back up with rope tied around the trusses until we get a new door, its still locked up & you can’t tell from the road! So thanks for the offer Cruz but shes in now & we do have another double garage down the back but it's full of '59 Oldsmobile! Until chapter two begins, bye for now, KazandAdam

Still loving your work Atog, congratulations on a superb van, but don't add too many extras or you won't be able to get inside!

Could someone please post about 1500 pics from the Wintersun!
This is the first year we've missed since we've been going, too busy knocking holes through garage walls saving VV's & really looking forward to some stories & photo's from the forum members who attended...............Adam

I think it's a great idea, how many times do ya see the part ya after & in the midst of all the excitment ya say "That's it!!! That's exactly the one I've been after, It's the same one I can't believe it!"
I know I'm after stuff all the time, just look at the register, see if the part is there & contact the forum seller. Definetly help a lot of restorers out.

Cobber,
Is that a defect notice on the windscreen or a disabled parking sticker?

..........also should have made mention that I will be open to advice & peoples opinions regarding the restoration of this van.
I want to get it 100% the way it was way back then, however with the current wall sheets needing so many repairs & patch work, it wouldn't have too much left of the original masonite anyway!
So theres my first open debate right there, retain or resheet? Don't worry people, I won't get offended in any way, just want to make this project right.

Three cheers to Ron & Steve!!! Sorry to put all that stress & responsibility on your shoulders Ron, but you're a true champion mate, a job well done! Hope you've recovered from the trip & I bet it was great to sleep in your own bed, now hurry up & get back to the Don.
Oh well, guess I don't have to load my photo's on just yet, I will begin a new thread soon.
Had a pretty good look at the van today (after I went to some garage sales & picked up a professional heat gun for $6.00), but after a good going over have decided to re-sheet the entire van. Although quite good the masonite is warped down the sides & the front & back need replacing anyway plus it's quicker to re-do it this way than persevere with it. (Also picked up some lead light cupboard doors for spare glass)
As it won't fit in my garage, by next weekend we'll have the axle, springs & draw bar off, & I'll screw four castor wheels on each corner & roll it in the shed. Really looking forward to this project but will be challenging at times, pretty well got things mapped out already, all except for knocking half the house down to make it fit when it's ready!
Almost forgot, that number plate? What number was it? Ahhh well, give me 20 minutes & you'll find out.
Cheers kaznadam.

Hi all, Haven’t had an update for a while, but here’s the latest pics, we will have the dining cushions back this week,my wife Kaz was impressed as I picked the genuine 8.3mtrs of cutain material (might be a bit loud for some but goes with the theme) souce some hubcaps, new U-bolts & just have to get the electrical tidied up, then blue slip & rego. By the time this is done, project two should be home! I tried to show a close up of the chrome edging, I had this idea at 3.00am one morning. I bought a 30m roll of 19mm wide automotive protector stripe, put this on with contact glue, then ran two double black pin strips over the top! It looks just like the original except it’s chrome, not gold, but looks good against the orange. You'll probably see it best on the third photo down. Cheers Adam.

Ha ha Bindilou, we gave up our Poncho in Febuary, sometimes you have to make sacrifices to move on to bigger & better things!!! The down side is we don't have a registered vintage tow vehicle for our vintage van.

Congratulations Dave on a well organised event, sounds like a great time was had by all exept just one lady, what a bummer!!!
Question: How come some had lush green grass to set up on while others were planted in the dirt?

Yes Gordon, the Reo Speedwagon's are pretty awesome, fat grill's & fat guard's, make the Chev's look like a match box car, (no offense intended).

Actually forgot to mention that if you decide to spray with enamel to give it a very fine coat first & this will help avoid runs in the paint. If you decide to spray in your shed at least everything will be the same colour, better mask up the windows & chrome first!!!

Hi Humpty2,
Our Quest was spray painted, I don't know if you'd quite get the same finish by hand painting, (I mean flat & smooth) however it is an extremely high gloss paint so you should get the shine.
My friend has a huge shed which has had the walls & roof lined & an extraction fan fitted in the wall, so even with the doors closed & the floor hosed you still get the odd bug but they generally polish out. The orange was done in clear over base 2-pak & for some reason the clear seemed to attract a few extra bugs but it gets cut & polished anyway.
I guess if I were you & you were thinking of brushing or rolling, try both on a small flat section first & see how they look, then you'll know!!
Cheers Adam.

Hi Centura-Quest,
Yeah the paint on our Quest is cream but looks more white in the photo's. The paint is a Norglass product, both primer & paint are polyurethane & unlike automotive products like spray putty etc... it won't allow sink backs over time & is a fibreglass purpose product. It was called either Norglass Shipshape or Shipright & comes in standard colours or you can order a special mix, hope this helps.
Cheers Adam.

Damn!!! Forgot to take the camera out today to show the latest update, I'll get some pics on Tuesday & post.
Had an awesome day today, the door, roof hatch & spats are now painted & I must say the orange spats look absolutley fantastic on the van!!! So obvious now though that it will have to be lowered a few inches & a mate has a 4" drop axle which will hopefully do the trick.
But that's not all!!! Got the floor tiled & screwed the dining lounges & bed's into place & also managed to get the kitchette in primer, & Kaz along with her friend Helen have made huge inroads into completing the retro curtains!!!
Until Tuesday

There's not too much more to add to the above comments, yes it was a fab weekend even though we were vanless & felt naked!!! And yes Reddo everyone found out what a hot place Berry is.
It was good to finally meet some of the forum member's & we apologise for not returning Saturday evening which we had planned to, but our daughter was a bit knocked around from the heat & had been fluey so we ended up calling it a day.
We had a great time with great vans & great people, & thanks for the great history lesson Jennison, you made my day!
PS: Haven't heard any news yet but everyone must have cleared out just in time as the road was blocked for 3 hours after lunch time. I figured there must have been a massive crash as 3 ambo's, 3 support vehicles, the rescue squad & later a helicopter went screaming past.
Kaz & Adam.
