Hi SGTL and Vintagevalerie, Well done on getting your photos into Photobucket and then posting the slideshow link, Vintagevalerie. If you want to post individual photos on the forum you can just copy and post the link for each photo starting with . You can cut and paste one link after another in the same post. I'm pretty sure that Millard serial numbers start with an 'M'. Not sure about Wayfarer. The'R' starting the serial number of Vintagevalerie's van rings a bell, but I can't place it at the moment... Maybe Franklin1 or Hughdeani will be able to help us? Don Ricardo

Hi Hughdeani,
The coloured panels on Vintagevalerie's van are very like those on SGTL's Viscount I agree, but the bulkhead above the front window is very rounded instead of squarish as on SGTL's van, and the profile of the rear and back window are quite different to SGTL's - more like a Millard (I'm not saying it is a Millard though). The profile of the cladding suggests a slightly younger van as well, I think.
I wonder what SGTL thinks?
Unless it's a Viscount from another factory after "the split"...??

it's been bugging me all night that I know what this is & this morning I thought 'have a look under Qualicraft window rubbers' at Bozhunters Hunter caravan, then very spookily, Bozhunter has posted on the forum with something else! Also the name 'Fleetwind' comes to mind. See what you all thin about Hunter & Fleetwind & i'll do some more digging

Hi DC3Td, I'm not convinced quite yet - as you'll see from something I just posted about Hunter caravans, I've been looking at Fleetwind vans in a bit of detail today and there are too many differences between Vintagevalerie's van and Eric's to my mind. I've also had a look at the other Fleetwinds but none of them have the same profile at the back as Vintagevalerie's - panel straight down for the window to the waist line (not set in under a bulkhead) and then notched out to a panel going down to the floorline. Hope you can understand what I'm saying. It's a bit frustrating when you can't find half reasonable/technical terms to explain more clearly! And then there's the serial number starting with 'R'. It rings a bell, but I can't think what...unless it's actually an 'F'?? Perhaps Vintagevalerie can confirm that it is actually an 'R' and/or show us a photo? If it is an 'F', I'll be on the Fleetwind bandwagon with you! Don Ricardo

G'day DonR,
Donald80 has a van with an "R" chassis number, which after a fair bit of research was dicovered to be a Roma van made by Franklin (and what I mean is that it appears to have been specially made to look sufficiently different to other Franklin vans at the time). Maybe the van in question here is a Roma made by another manufacturer??
cheers, Al.

G'day Franklin1, Thanks for posting the info about the 'R' serial number. The thread about Donald80's van is here. Unfortunately the photos have disappeared because they were posted on Donald80's behalf by a forum member who is no longer on the forum. Perhaps we can ask Donald80 to send one of us his photos and we can post them again? It will be fascinating to see if his van bears any resemblance to Vintagevalerie's. Don Ricardo

DonR, by coincidence you yourself have posted a photo of donald80's van from the Broken Hill Nats. It's in this post but you have to wade down through the photos - count down to the 28th photo showing "Woody" in white with blue stripes. His other van, "Janie", is the Viscount showing below that.
The photos Donald80 has of the van when he first got it are the important ones, particularly the one he has showing the rear end with its original paintwork before he replaced that section. That's how we finally picked up that it was a Roma because of the distinctive paint design that matched the other Romas in our DHL section.
cheers, Al.

Hey guys, this is the only weld on the draw bar! The back windows don't appear to be original as the pattern in the aluminium changes! Thanks for all your help I've looked at so many posts but it's slightly different to all of them!

Hi Valerie, I still think it's a Viscount, look at DHL and you will see an old Viscount with the exact same shape as yours. Hyou're right, the back window has been fitted much later,it probably had a fixed window originally, then replaced with a wind out for better air flow. Cheers hughdeani

Hi Hughdeani, I've looked through DHL a couple of times to work out which van you are referring to. Is it one of these two? The sides are definitely a match for Vintagevalerie's - including the wheel spats, which with the coloured side panels probably are the clincher? - but the front and rear are dissimilar, even allowing for the back window being replaced. Or perhaps I've been looking at the wrong one in DHL? If so which one are you referring to? I'm really intrigued now! Don Ricardo

Yeah I did see DHL photos but the front window is a wrap around as ours isn't.... Very close though! Also I think the interior might be different as our cap to fill our (non existant!) watertank is on the opposite side to our door! It's got me stumped! Haha

Here is a Viscount with double front windows & no wrap arounds, but still different shape. & I have not seen a viscount with sliding cupboard doors either. vintagecaravans.proboards.com/thread/6802/jos-new-viscount-vanI still think it's far more like a Millard. Have you looked under the sink, behind the fridge & under the table for any pencil markings that might help?

Hi SGTL, I hope you are cataloguing all those Viscounts so you can write up a definitive manual on them one day? I think Viscount is almost as confusing as Wayfarer in terms of all the different variations and models it produced - I just think I've got my head around it, and another slightly or majorly different variation turns up. Back to business - Vintagevalerie's van... Towards the end of the thread you referred us to on Bluetangjo's Viscount there are a couple of photos of a Viscount belonging to Ericlyn. I've written up this van in a bit of detail here. (There aren't too many vans with a sun shade made up of fence pickets, so I'm pretty sure they are the same van!) The thing about the photos of Ericlyn's van is that it shows the rear with a back window with no bulkhead over it but a hump below it. That's the only Viscount I've seen with that rear treatment (I think). Where I am going with all this is that the back of the van does look a lot like I think Vintagevalerie's might have before the double awning windows. I take your point about the sliding cupboard doors, and the front window treatment is still a question mark for me, but I can see there are some Viscount features there. If we go back to Franklin1's comment higher up the thread, I wonder if it's a van built by Viscount for Roma, hence the 'R' on A-frame? Don Ricardo PS Hmmm...just had another look at the rear of Vintagevalerie's van. The hump is much more pronounced than on Ericlyn's. Looking like the van may have had some quite radical surgery at some stage perhaps?

Hi again Valerie, Gets confusing doesn't it?You are starting to think every van you see bears a resemblance to yours! That one is a Scenic made by Newlands caravans, nothing like yours! If you start looking at the DHL section on here, which is extremely informative you may start realising what is what in the caravan world. Cheers hughdeani

Hi Don, The Viscount I mean is the Bondwood one with the porthole .It has a top roll on the front with 2windows side by side. The shape looks the same to me,as you know there were lots of variations of models over the years. Maybe Viscount experimented with different shapes back then, who knows? And as we have seen in the past, the chassis number does not always relate to the van! Maybe Viscount outsourced chassis at some stage from a company that started with the initial "R"as is commonplace today! Cheers hughdeani

Ohhh! Thaaaat one, Hughdeani! Now I see where you're coming from! And sliding cupboard doors too, I see. I guess we have to be careful not to overthink things when trying to ID vans. Sometimes the simplest explanation is the best, and sometimes there will be a mystery we can't solve, especially in cases like Viscount where they had three factories doing their own thing, often in multiple ways. I reckon I'm on the Viscount bandwagon with you now on Vintagevalerie's van. Thanks for persevering with your explanations. Don Ricardo

Well we named her Valerie as in - Valerie the viscount so was kind of hoping she was! Haha I love the one with the porthole! Maybe she'll just be a mystery van! Anyway I'll post more photos once we strip the outside of her to show how she comes up! Thanks for all your help!
