Does one NEED to prewash the calico before fitting it? well ray, when we calico'd the aerolite, we didn't bother to pre-wash/shrink the material, we simply painted it on with a heavy coat of paint. two things resulted. firstly, the surface of the calico was a bit "fluffy" because it wasn't washed but that was fixed by light sanding before the second coat. secondly, there were no folds or puckering, presumably because as the first coat dried, it might have shrunk slightly and tightened the material. either way, not washing the calico didn't cause any significant problem in the long run. geoff 'n jude

howdy all
is anybody else having a problem when you select "Recent Posts" on the forum.
i can access any thread from the "home menu" or through "new topics" but when i attempt to use "recent posts", i get a big red message saying "Deceptive site ahead" and the menu bar displays "Dangerous|Vintagecaravans.proboards.com/posts/recent".
is it just my computer or is it a proboards problem.
ps. it doesn't happen on the classic forum site.

pps. when i click on the above link, i also get the Deceptive site ahead message, do you?

a bit of sad news for hollywood john (or maybe now only bollywood john), his moment didn't make the cut and ended up on the cutting room floor. i guess that this means cobber still holds the hollywood title - well defended cobber, i didn't know you had that many contacts at channel 7.
the good news though was that sue was well seen sitting on the doorstep of the colourful expanda van and gabby and alan were spotted mulling around their open annex.
the drone view spotted nearly everybody's van but you'd need to stop, zoom and use a really good imagination to justify bragging rights.

don't forget, today's the day hollywood john is programmed to make his international television debut on sydney weekender.
sydney weekender is on today at 5.30pm on Channel 7 in Sydney and across NSW & the ACT, so make sure you tune in, record or see it on catch-up when you bother to get around to it.

hi craig
use a 2" scraper under the frame to break the sealant.
start working across the bottom then work your way up each side bit by bit, giving the frame a bit of a pull from time to time to see if it will release completely.
when you replace it, don't use silicon sealer - it's much better to use selleys butyl mastic because it remains soft for long periods and doesn't set hard and crack to allow leaks.
before finally fitting the window, put it in place and pencil around the frame, remove the frame and mask up close to the pencil line before refitting using the sealant.
once fitted, the excess sealer will be squeezed onto the masking tape and if you leave it for about a day or two, when you carefully remove the tape, there'll be no mess to clean up on your shiny new paintwork. (it might help to run around the frame with the corner point of the scraper before removing the tape to create a release line for the sealant).
good luck, geoff 'n jude

howdy all just back from 10 great days at shellharbour, what a good time we had. a bit of wind, a bit of rain but enough sunshine to have a really good time with good friends. on friday morning, hollywood john, formerly known as strugglebrook, managed to get himself in front of the sydney weekender tv cameras (on air 4th november, we think) and on saturday morning, judy was interviewed by the local abc radio station, so our time there didn't go unnoticed. friday afternoon we had a big group fivesies session followed by a free bar-b-que put on by julie and mark, the van park management - just goes to show how much they appreciate our annual migration to shellharbour. plenty of time to sit around and have a chin wag and drink. not sure what kenny koala was looking at so intently, maybe just trying to see through blurry eyes! we had been "talking" for a while by now. saturday afternoon was the bake-off, kenny won the best cake made by a bloke, lady pamela won the best cake made by a girl, michael won the best pikelete division and kerrie won the best strudle bought from a cake shop. as usual, veronica won the best over-all division for her never-ending supply of yummie treats. as you can see, they were all too good to wait for a photo before getting stuck in to them. one last shot of the weekend. well, that's it for 2018, almost everybody booked in for 2019 so we'll see you all there if not before. geoff 'n jude

howdy all over the winter, our opposite neighbors took a summer sojourn up to qld so we took the opportunity to make good use of their big carport and did some work on the roadie. we replaced the left hand electric brake setup and the drum, pulled out the rear curved windows and resealed them. we also replaced the rubber seals on all the flat glass windows, we cut out, filled and fibreglassed a few (24 in all) cracks and splits on the roof and resealed them (the darker sections). feeling happy, we brought it back home (long trip, from across the road) and put it under the brand new cover we bought for it, snug as a bug in a rug (you'd hope). of course, it's still parked under the dreaded angophra tree that has three times caused significant damage in the past. well, yesterday, we took the cover off to get it ready for shellharbour and to our sheer delight, no holes in the ceiling, not a single one - we'd survived the windy season without dropping branches causing any damage, we felt so proud and happy. they say pride cometh before a fall, especially a falling branch. we were inside today and judy looked up to the skylight and noticed a design change. the glass is high strength structural glass used on high rise buildings so it must have taken a good old wack. we don't have time to fix it before shellharbour so it'll just become a kind of arts and craft/art deco feature for now. geoff 'n jude

Ray, heat is the enemy when using solar panels and a overheated panel = reduced output. kind of ironic isn't it that the more sun a solar panel gets, the less effective they are. if that's the case, they must be super efficient at midnight.

A couple of changes to our Saturday plans . There is also an open day / sale at Oak Flats plant nursery that some people have expressed interest in going to , with this and Loot in Your Boot and Gerringong Markets we have moved Judy's craft demo to 1.00pm .
It has been suggested we all get together around 2.00-2.30pm for a Loooooong Lunch , this will include anyone who would like to make scones or bake a cake for judging , or just bring a plate of something to share while we sit around chatting and possibly drinking until the sausage sizzle later in the day.
Geoff has said he might even make pikelets if you are lucky ( or not )

It is nearly time for the annual migration from near and far to beautiful Shellharbour , where the weather is always full of surprises. Maybe this year it will surprise us with lots of sunshine 😄. There are a few things on to keep everyone entertained :
Saturday morning Judy ( Mrs Koala ) has offered to have a craft morning , she is kindly bringing all the supplies .
Saturday morning there is Loot In Your Boot a car boot sale at Redall Reserve Lake Illawarra , I have never been but have heard it is really good.
Saturday morning the Gerringong markets are also on .
Saturday afternoon all gather at the camp kitchen for a get together , last years scone contest was lots of fun . What should we do this year ? Desperately need suggestions.
Saturday night the park is going to supply us with a sausage sizzle again .
Sunday morning the Kiama Seaside markets are on .
There has been the usual shuffling of sites due to some not being able to make it this year , this has resulted in sites 21N and 20N being left vacant . This means we will unfortunately have modern vans in between us , so if you know of anyone who would like to join us please let me know as soon as possible .
Unfortunately there are no cars shows on this weekend , I'm not sure how it happened but we seemed to have crept forward by a week meaning we miss the Jamberoo Car Show , will sort this for next year .
Also on Friday 19th October Sydney Weekender will be filming a segment on the park and Julie is very excited that the vintage vans will be there , so make sure they are all looking their very best as they might be famous and make the story .
See everyone soon

hi ray
clerestory, overstory, mollycroft (and lantern) rooves are all the same, just different names. (a bit like tomato and tomato).
in actual fact, calling these types of rooves lantern rooves on a caravan is a misnomer, since lantern rooves are meant to be circular, like a lantern (as seen on top of cathedral domes).
mollycroft is just the terminology given to romany caravans.

Hi All,
I haven't updated this thread for a while as I am trying to get sites sorted , unfortunately we have lost two waterfront sites permanently due to a tree branch falling through the roof of a van - sounds familiar 😄🌲 . Garry and Fran. I have sent you a PM as I haven't been able to contact you on your mobiles.
Judy ( Ken and Judy ) has asked if any ladies would be interested in a show and tell craft morning , sounds like a great idea to me.
Ok now I need the brains trust to help out here, last year we had the famous scone challenge and it was lots of fun , what can we come up with for an afternoon of fun this year . It has been suggested to have another scone challenge , a cake cooked in your barbie challenge , a combo of both or any other ideas welcome . It was a great way of getting everyone together and the park has said they are happy to do another sausage sizzle for us on the Saturday night .
I have had requests from people to move sites , I can only do this if the " owner " of the site choose not to come or do a swap .
Can I ask everyone to call the park on 4295 1123 to pay your deposits and let them know which days you will be there so they can re let the sites .
Looking forward to your suggestions and input to help make this year lots of fun.

well, another murrurundi over and done with.
this one saw one or two new memories created - the most memorable being reddos attempt at drinking a full bottle of "the johnnie" and failing miserably.
well, to be true, the drinking of the bottle was a success but the ability to walk and talk afterwards was a complete failure.
in the words of the captain in cool hand luke, "What we've got here is failure to communicate,"
anyhow, thanks again to john and pam for all their time and efforts to make it another memorable one.

ps - it seems after reddo's efforts he has been demoted to junior bater and john is the new master.

hi rob
our 1965 roadie has the number welded on the top front of the right hand 'a' frame up near the coupling.
ours is number 85 - no real idea what that signifies except that it is the one after 84.
