Hi all,
As there haven't been enough definites for the Xmas in July meal at the Pub, I've cancelled the booking. I told the Pub we will still come to the Pub on Sat night & we can all order off the menu to our own preferences. Bus will leave from Camp Kitchen after 5.45pm to go to Pub.
Friday night, it's up to you! Bring a dish to share in the camp kitchen from 6pm, eat your own tucker in your van, the options are limitless!
Just remember to bring some firewood and a big jacket !
See u there

Hi Retropod & all
Good suggestion re Byron Holiday Park for 2020 Nats. Close enough to Qld to count there! It's really the only park in Byron that is Dog friendly apart from Belongil Fields which is totally unsuitable. This park used to be a dump but management have really cleaned it up nicely. Good walk from the Park through the heathland to the beach south of BB Lighthouse. Park is opposite BB golf course. Over the years I've often suggested this Park as a weekend meetup but never got any takers. We've stayed there & enjoyed it. Of course, if you were bored in Byron, there would have to be something wrong with you there's so much to see & do!

Well we all enjoyed ourselves so much in 2015 & 2016, we want to do it all over again! "When it ain't broke, why fix it?" Last year many of us went for the whole week prior to those weekend dates 24-26 November, so its up to you when you book, how many days you want to stay! Casey at Evans Head Holiday Park, is reserving about 22 sites in the dog friendly area in the area facing the river. At the moment all of the back row in the trees & around the corner (where Terry & Vicki like) is free. She will hold them until outsiders want to book so GET IN QUICK!!! There's only 655 left on the riverfront! Phone 02 6682 4212 & say you’re with the Vintage Vanners www.northcoastholidayparks.com.au/park/info/evans-headwww.northcoastholidayparks.com.au/park/map/evans-headJust click to download site map before you book Powered sites $35/night, Unpowered riverfront sites $? Deposit is $50 There are no pensioner discounts. If booking is cancelled 7 days before, then deposit can be transferred to another date with no penalty or refund can be taken minus a $30 admin charge. We have booked the Kiosk (right next door to the area we will be situated), just for our Group, for our Xmas/End of Year Celebration on Saturday evening, 25 November. If we have an idea of numbers closer to event, the Kiosk will add extra tables. As you can see from the following menu, the meals are simple but cheap, with added benefit of BYO within walking distance of vans! Closer to the event we can throw around ideas of decorations/tablecloths etc. Anybody got ideas for fancy dress? Hawaiian was great last year as it fitted with location & weather so what about Fijian/bamboo/think big wooden spoons & forks? Ideas? www.evans-head.com.au/riverfront-kiosk-cafe-menu/Friday night I imagine Adrian will give us the free meat trays again to have a BBQ night on the Rivers Edge. Everybody really got it together bringing a share plate of buns, salad, sauces, cake, desserts so lets do that again! Can't wait! So I’ll say it again! Phone Park & get in quick for a great site in a fantastic location!

Rodnet's Kalbar event clashes with Laidley event so Rodnet is happy to re-schedule Kalbar to this weekend in October. Fassifern Car Club holds its Swap Meet in the Kalbar Showground on Sunday 15 October. Last year the Swap Meet drew in 2000 visitors, 100 classic cars & 190 stallholders so it should be a neat little country event. Market, Bric-a-brac, Cars, Trucks, Bikes, Old Engine, Trators, Car Show 10am presentation, Food & Drinks Stall
Entry: $5 Stall Holders - 5am, $2 General Public - 6am, Children 12 & Under Free.
For more info call Vince 0409 075 919.
I've phoned Showgrounds Caretaker, they will put us in a group close to Amenities, somewhere between pavillion & canteen, near the classic car display. We may have to pay $2/person to enter Swap meet or $5 vehicle entry for Show/Shine, plus camp fees (see below). Caretaker will need definite numbers by late September so post in this thread or PM me if you're interested in camping for the weekend & I'll pass on numbers to Caretaker. Can you tell me whether you'll be wanting to leave before Swap meet is over about 2-3pm Sunday arvo?
Kalbar is situated in the Scenic Rim, one of Australia's most popular inland destinations and is just 30 minutes from Ipswich, 50 minutes from Brisbane and 90 minutes from the Gold Coast. From the Cunningham Highway just follow the signs. There is also the scenic route from Ipswich or the Gold Coast via Boonah. The region is home to eight National Parks and offers many local activities and attractions.
SHOWGROUND CAMPING: Large Powered Sites Toilets & hot showers Big rigs OK Water / reticulated Large open areas Shade, seating & yards Short walk to shops and hotel Dump Point Dogs on leads (at all times) Breathable Mats only Overnight Accommodation powered site: $18.00 per couple / per van Overnight Accommodation unpowered site: $13.00 per site/ per couple Weekly Powered Sites: $100.00 Weekly Unpowered Sites: $70.00

Most people will remember that the famous Cooly Rocks On Festival in Coolangatta used to be called Wintersun in its smaller & quieter days. Some event organisers are now trying to recreate some of the original magic of those days by staging Wintersun 2.00 at Murwillumbah Showground, just 20kms south of Coolangatta & a week prior to Cooly Rocks On, on 2-5 June. Amenities at Murwillumbah Showground have been upgraded recently, & camping will cost $20/night/2 people. Showground is within easy walking distance of town & has sensational views across the canefields to the mountains. Dogs on leads allowed. I phoned organiser who is happy for us to be in a group near the Amenities. Let me know in this thread if you’re interested. www.wintersun2.com.au/

Just letting everyone know that Xmas in July at Canungra was booked for 2017 while we were still there in 2016!
For those of you that haven’t been to Canungra, it’s a lovely little village west of the Gold Coast with plenty of things to do around the area, such as O’Reillys Guesthouse, Lamington Plateau, wineyards, hot air ballooning etc etc.
So I’ve re-confirmed dates with Garry, caretaker at Canungra Showgrounds. He’s definitely reserved the area for us around the great new camp kitchen from Thursday 27 to Monday 31 July. Camping with power at the Showgrounds will cost $25/night/couple, dogs are allowed on leads & fires are allowed in drums. No need to book a spot, just let me know in this thread by PM or by text if you want to come & which nights you will be coming. Just pay Garry in first house on right as you drive into Showgrounds. Phone 075543 5904 if you want further info from Garry.
Xmas Dinner in July will be at 6.00pm on Saturday Night 29 July at the Canungra Hotel with open fireplace, set dinner of roast turkey & ham, roast & steamed veges, plum bpudding, tea/coffee/bonbons for $22/person. Hotel has courtesy bus that will take us in batches to the Pub & back home again. We will need definite numbers for dinner in advance in this thread & people can pay Dosse & Christine in the Camp Kitchen between 4.00-5.00 on Saturday afternoon then get ready for bus by 5.30pm.
Friday night dinner will be a share meal at 6.00pm in the camp kitchen. Whatever you are bringing to share, whether its main course or dessert, come along at 6.00, bring chairs, plates & hopefully we will all eat together. Please also contribute some firewood if you can!
Should be another great weekend at Canungra! All welcome!

Hi Bob & Jacqui,
I think the general feeling has been for Hawaiian Night on Saturday night. But look, you could combine the 2 & come in retro Hawaiian (surf in to the kiosk on a 10ft balsa plank! Vintage Christmas Hawaiian? Sounds pretty cool to me!
Friday night is a freee BBQ in the Riverside BBQ area. Adrian the manager has kindly donated enough meat for all. If everyone brings something extra to share, that will be great, such as nibbles, salad, buns etc etc 6pm at the BBQ. Special guests will be Wal Robinson, nephew of the "Don" & wife Anna.
Cheers smiles

OK folks, its the 1st November, so not long to go to the event at Evans Head. So far 16 vans are booked in. There's still a small riverside site vacant on 653, but for everyone else with larger vans who hasn't booked in as yet, you will have to move into the shady trees. I've been contacted by a photographer who wants to do a story on this Vintage Van event for Jetstar’s inflight magazine. Adrian, the Park manager is very keen of course, as this is great publicity for his gorgeous Park. I suggested to the journalist that most people like to dress up in retro gear for our Saturday night dinner, so do we want to work out a theme for that night such as Hawaiian? or just Retro Gear? Thoughts on this? Music? Someone wants to bring a music machine? Some of the staff at the Kiosk are musos & offered their services (for a fee), so we'd have to send the hat around for that, if that's what we wanted! In my next post, I'll put up the Kiosk menu & give you an idea of what sort of music the staff play. Great weather, so really looking forward to this event! Kayaks are going for sure! smiles

Hi Murray
re your Fynspray...there's an old saying: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"! Why bother putting a 12v pump inline if the hand pump works? Part of the joy of vintage caravanning when you're out in the wilds is not knowing if the f...ing pump will work!
We have old Fynspray-like pumps in our vans & they work well (most of the time) if you follow a few basic notions such as, keeping the leather or rubber washers greased, cleaning out your tank after use, & possibly replacing old stuffed galvanized tanks.
Rob put non-return valves in 3 of our pumps but has taken the valve out of the Castle pump as that one seemed to leak air & it works OK without it. It just means more arm wrestling with the pump to get water if you don't have a non-return valve.
Anyway, just my 2 bobs worth. We like to experience vintage camping with original functioning items such as using iceboxes with ice in them. It's all about expectations: as long as you don't expect the icebox to behave like a modern fridge, then you have a great feature. Same for pumps: don't expect the old pumps to behave like a swish 2016 modern tap, then you have something special to experience!

When it was Silver Sands C/Park, they didnt take pooches, but about a year ago they have allowed dogs in some seasons, to be in the Council Reserve area down next to the Kiosk near the river. Great spot!

Hi all
people were asking about Evans Head event. Here's the thread with all the links etc for people to book direct with the Caravan Park. Don't forget to mention you're with the Vintage Vanners in the dog friendly area!
We have booked the Kiosk for Saturday night 26 November. We will have sole use of the Kiosk for our Group. There are a lot more rustic tables now so manager says we will fit in our group easily. I'll put his menus up soon, then if everyone can choose off the Menu, I can send it to Manager a week prior to event. If it looks like rain, Bart the Manager will clean up that big shed out the back (can't think what it's called).

Hi Guys n Gals
We're at about 39 vans now, so I had a quick chat to Showground Caretaker. He says we should all be able to squeeze most of the vans into the usual area he's reserved for us, between Camp Kitchen/Amenities Block/Grandstand/Wooden Shed on a first come first served basis. in other words, just back your van into the available area (WAGON TRAIN is probably out of question unless someone wants to be Parking Coordinator & wear a shirt designation (BEEN THERE, DONE THAT, NOT ME! the parking not the shirt). Might need to bring long leads if you end up a bit far from power box.
Don't bother booking site at Showground as I have told Caretaker the numbers or stopping at Caretakers to pay, he wants me to collect your money off you. So it's $11/per person/per nite for a powered site OR $22/night for 2 people. I will collect money Sat morning so have your right money ready if you could please! Also you will need to pay Dave for Sat Dinner, $22/person/dinner. He wants exact money too!
Caretaker says we won't be able to keep any areas for friends. Any overflow he will direct into the area beside his house (as he's just installed a power pole there now) & if that area gets full, vans can go just inside the Arena gateway where the kids Group will be (see post above about the Kids In Tow group & invitation to movies for our kidlets).
So he says we can put our fire drum (transported by Rob) over near the Camp Kitchen (which now has Fridge, BBQ & tables & chairs), as long as it doesn't burn the grass as he's worked hard to reinvigorate the place. He is happy for us to put our fire on the edge of the road near the Kitchen.
WOOD! if everyone brings some wood, that will be great, we will be very cosy!
FRIDAY NITE! if you want to do your own thing re dinner, that's fine, it's not compulsory to share. If you want to eat your own dinner alongside everyone else, thats fine! Everyone has different food tastes! If people want to share dinner, bring your chairs, crockery, cutlery & reheated food to the camp kitchen, say Drinks/Soup/entrees at 6.00, then Main course at 6.30, & dessert at 7.00 or after. There will be enough tables & lights to spread it out.
SAT NITE...Free Pub Bus will start pickup at 5.30, so there will be a few runs to get us all over to the Pub by 6.30 for dinner. The bus returns to Showground when you're ready to go home!
SECRET SANTA! a few people have contacted me & said, don't worry about SS or a SWAP.
Cheers
Cathie
Hi Bob & Jacqui/John & Heather

Molly on SEQ site asked whether we want to have a Secret Santa. There was also talk about having a Swap Table on Sat arvo or a Bring & Sell. How does everyone feel about this? Do we want any of these? I know in the past, people have asked that if we decide to do a Present Swap, that it be only an item that is vintage, as some people were disappointed that they'd brought along a vintage item only to then receive a very non-vintage item!
So let's know your thoughtssss!!!!!

Hi Kerrie & Bruce
You're on the list!
Event is at Canungra Showgrounds. It's well signposted with access roads either end of Canungra which is small village. $22 per night for 2 people.
The VV site won't let me login on my phone any more, so I have to do it on my laptop, which means most of the time I'm reading the posts but can' t reply easily, so YES I'm still here!

Hi Rod
If I was technically more advanced with maths I'd do a drawing but here goes instead!
Currently there's about 30+ vans coming. If 40 vans come & we allow 8 metres per van (2m for van, 2m for annex, 2m for pegs & 2m for free space) then that means we need a circle with a circumference of 320m if everyone gets it together & parks sideways across the imaginary line of the circle. Doesn't matter which direction they have their tow bar, either facing into the circle or facing out of the circle, as long as they park sideways & vans are positioned offset or staggered to their neighbours. Then they take their car out of the circle & park it nearby leaving a free area in the middle?
Now... divide 320m by pi (3.14) to get the diameter of the circle & it's just over 100m.
So Roddy, if you get there first to Canungra, can you find a spot for the fire drum in the middle of the circle with a diameter of 100m. Then if everyone parks 50m away from the fire drum on the edges of the imaginary circle, we should be right.
Obviously if everyone parked car-van-car-van end to end, yes we would need the whole arena & it would be too big an area in the middle & parking the vans would be impossible! Hopefully 50m will be short enough distance for people to carry firewood, chairs, tables, food to the fire in centre without it being a long hike. It'll warm us up!
Now can I go back to doing whatever it was I was doing?
