Hi Willyn, Thank's for the offer, I haven't been over that way yet but you know how it goes commitments etc etc . Anyway great pics, I see its got the original Commer motor and has a Holden red motor thermostat housing on the motor. That's not unusual from memory the 1500 motor had the dipstick tube going down into the sump and the 1725 motor has the dipstick going in through the engine block above the sump. According to your compliance plate and my workshop manual, it was built the 9/1963. My last Highwayman was also made by Bluebird Conversions. I had to send to the Netherlands for a brand new water pump $160 or was approx. $130 reco from Brisbane. This link www.rootesparts.com/ remanufacture Pommie stuff to OEM standards. (Still have mine in the box- Only done 12 kms). I recall there is a place in England that sell rust repair sections for the bottoms of the doors (with the finger style groove.) Do you have the original brackets that fit into the window frames to support the bunk bed? As i have a set here, I could send pics, measurements etc if you need them, as i kept bits and pieces from my last one as it was too far gone and wasn't economically feasible to restore. The first one I sold for $2,000 in 1999 restored condition as pictured below. (Yes, I know : Hwyman

Hi 313Royal;
Thanks for those great pics. That Highway Palace is a ripper. I saw one similar to this (just the trailer part) early last year at Dereel (near Ballarat) just sat out in the middle of a block with all the windows broken and a bit of vandalism, but still had all the lounge area and kitchen cupboards etc all intact. I recall it looking very 50's decor inside. The front raised section was designed for a double island bed, with 50's style bedside tables. Can't be too many of those around.

Hi all i must of missed this post interestingly i recently sold a Austin Healey Sprite to a Ballarat film maker of course our discussion turned to vv's and he said he owns one of Slim Dusty's old vans and would sell it for a few hundred, he is not to sure of it's condition as he has not inspected it on his property for some time i believe he said it was done up for his last tour. Because he was busy i delivered the car to him he was happy and said i could have the van does anybody know what this van looked like,maybe it's the one he towed with the ZD Fairlane A/T spoke about it's been a while i have not contacted him or seen the van does anyone know the model or vintage Thanks Hwyman.

Counting all that cash from your recent sales must have done something to your eyes Reddo ; that's a old fire extinguisher above the doorway.

Reddo, sorry to see the misfortune you are having up your way. I was thinking ???you may be able to empty the lower cupboards etc. in Matilda and throw plenty of that cheap kitty litter in. Surely this should absorb the moisture quicker and could be vaccumed out later. I think everyone will be trying to get hold of steam cleaning machines up there to do their cars etc. Hwyman

Look at the size of that compressor! Talk about Reddo's portable morgue. You have started a new trend- Vintage Van cool rooms. No worrying whether there is room for a beer in the fridge... the van is a fridge. Hwyman

By the look of that roof hatch sat on some type of cupboard and the blue colored curved ply it looks as though it may be some sort of pop up foldout ply beds like an experimental early cabana caravan concept?

Hi Lisa; I'm pretty sure I know this van (Roadhaven) and if the wayfarer is blue and white, you bet me by a couple of weeks. I went to buy this van myself. Would these be the ones that belonged to Old Cess with the black '64 Chevrolet? Who lives across the road from the Plaza in Bendigo? Hwyman

Hi kingy I saw one of these go on ebay some time back looks like the same one it had a holden motor and running gear you may have already done your home work but beware of the old it has been registed with this running gear . yeah! but did they have it engineered? from memory these had a pathetic little 1200cc motor how are those little brakes going to go trying to pull it up never mind with a van on the back . some people rip out the old running gear put in the new (10x the horse power) drive it around like this for 5 years then try and pass it of to a new owner with out a roadworthy (of course). saying it should be right its been registed like this . dont mean to be a killjoy just something worth considering if you have not already .
