G'day George 'n kaybee, George the one on the "Windmill" has a full width hinge on the bottom of it and yes..a screw at the top to hold it shut. Kaybee, those lens look like they should fit the Campbell surrounds, wonder if they do  , I'll ask the seller. Not much good if they don't .....aye? Cobber. |

Threadkiller strikes again ;D....lets see if I can do it again.....  ....there's a lot of good styled lights available from many 30's and 40's era cars , and they all have decent glass lenses to go with the quality internal electrical fittings.....unlike many of the el cheapo aftermarket offerings from more modern times that don't suit the old caravan styling. The set shown above are '48 Chevrolet and are available now as reproductions of the originals,right down to the glass lens and the stainless steel trims. ...or these '50 Pontiac lights we've used on the Woodie   ...or the '46 Olds lights we used on our teardrop , thought they were a nice match with the squared off shape at the back of the van  ...these '48 Dodge lights have a shape that would work well with a curved back wall on a Don or similar.....  ...used these 54 Dodge lights on one of our vans some time back,,,  ...or these repro '48 Ford lights we used on our Hawthorn  ...they were originally front park lamps but now are available with coloured lenses.....  ....the close up....number plate light is an FJ lens in a Campbells base ....and here's something Cobber will appreciate....  ...every FJ should have one ,eh? ;D |

I know the feeling  Thanks for all those examples you've been saving just for this thread  and thanks for the semaphore one too, did it come in a left turn variety as well ? My first car was a 1938 Austin 10 .....same age as me it was it had semaphore indicators which sometimes needed a whack to make 'em return to normal.... same as me Anybody else feel like taking a photo of their caravan tail lights ..... clearance lights.... stop lights....... number plate light , doesn't matter if they have been posted before. Hi Cobber , yep...you just flip it over to the other side. It's an aftermarket item from the early 50's that clips onto the q/vent window divider bar and uses a torch like body on a swivel , when you flip it up and out a mercury switch turns the light on....way cool!. I'll open it up and get some pics of it.....I liked it so much I bought 2 ;D ( in the boxes of course..... )..... |

Looking for lights with a flat back, combination indicator/stop/tail lights, easy to change globes and curved to suit a teardrop caravan shape. This is what I chose. ;D  Can you guess what car they are off ........ |

Hi,
They look very much like late 1950's Hillman lights, same as I used on my Sunliner rebuild, & on Lucille's rebuild.
International truck had a similar shape, but different size.
Nice lights that are suitable in lots of applications.
Teardrop looks good

 These would do well on a van ,the design comes from the early 60,s , the original Cobra bodies were built in England and these are actually Land Rover parts ,which are still available, and cheap to ( well they were 15 years ago when i built this car ) there is a stainless cup available to sit them in that covers the rubber seal as well ..  As you can see i went a bit overboard with these home made LED lights ,they turned out bigger than i thought . as was pointed out to me that you can use them as a bar and rest your drink there . or as a tool bench .. !!!! cheers kel. |

The tail lights (which aren't all that unusual) on an early '60s "unknown brand caravan"..... have a look at this link.. maybe you can help identify the maker of these caravans  Cobber. ...can't help you with that one Bob.....and those lights look like the ones on my trailer ;D, not far removed from the homely old Hella items that were on the Hawthorn when we brought it home  ....and very quickly went in the discard pile ..... ;D ....found a few more lights to share.....  ....lights in the foreground are '48 Dodge , quite a pronounced curved base on them as can be seen on the bare rim beside the pair......would work well on something with a distinct curve to it.....  ....nice oval lights are '51 Ford,these are bit beat up but you can easily see the potentail for use in an old van....they are about 7" across by 1 3/4" high , not so large that they visually overpower a smallish van.....  ....these are '46 Pontiac , a neat light too, but they are curved on the back for r/h or l/h applications.....just a simple timber base to space them out a bit will solve that problem.....  ....these next ones are what I sent Reddo for his new van , they were off a Vanguard Spacemaster , eminently suitable for those who don't like American lights ;D , tho I dunno why you wouldn't...... ;D  .....here's another pair that have a simple flat base.....  .....ciao.... |

Kaybees lights now installed and doing sterling service on the TD..   Can be a real pain in the bum trying to find lights to suit curved surfaces on the back of vans. I steered away from using lights in a horizontal position that where mounted vertical on the original vehicle......dunno why.. just did. With a bit of extra effort making a suitable base ( in the TD's case I used thongs to make the bases) those sort of lights can be mounted vertical. The old hella trailer lights do the job... and are readily vailable ... but sort of look a bit out of place on a vintage van. with so many replica 30s. 40s, 50s and 60s style taillights available nowadays its not hard to come up with something that looks period for the vans. Early Harley stop/tail light on the TD...  The monster round lights where from the back of an F100 ambulance. and.. sometimes less is good...  a few campbellls lights on the "Lockhart " TD Reddo |

This clearance light might have been on Viscount vans around 1963 ?... according to franklin 1 Have a look at this thread (reply #3)they were apparently also used extensively on vans in the USofA during the 50s and 60s, good chance of finding a replacement on eBay, or a google search, also available with red lens.  Another one on a 1960s Viscount. See the thread Here How about this one ? You can see the van Here... gee I hope it is still around.... somewhere, does anybody know ?  Cobber. |

Just like to let Al know he is a star!!!!  Spent the day in Bendigo and surrounding areas looking for my perfect franklin Freeway tail lights with a photo!!!! only to come home with a headache and then find these posts and even better an actual photo of my taillights and surprisingly an advert my Franklins birth year and more pics of her lights  I know I know I know - why didn't I look on here earlier?? its a chick thing  Must go have to google Hella part no 2370 for sale...... Yes, they will, but you'll need two sets of red lights. One set will need a 5W festoon globe for the tail light, and the other set will need an 18W or 21W festoon globe for the stop light. Then you'll need an amber set for the indicators, which will need to have 18W festoon globes. Keep in mind that the amber colour in the plastic is not as yellow as the indicator lenses used in Oz, but you should be able to get away with them for rego. Each of these lights has a diameter of 70mm, so with three of them beside each other, you'll be using up a minimum of 210mm space either side of your van. If you do decide to buy these types of lights, make sure you buy them all from the one seller, so your postage costs from the UK will be minimised. These lights are made in Asia, and are as common as muck on UK ebay, but you won't always see the red and amber listed at the same time. However, the sellers can get them both (as well as a clear version), so make contact with them for a group purchase. Amber versions are currently listed here.I've always liked the look of the Hella/Narva lights that were used on vans from the mid-1960s upwards. These sell for about $90-plus each from outlets here in Oz, but if you look through NZ TradeMe, you'll see them listed for around $NZ33.00 (like here ). Also check through TradeMe for UK caravan tail lights ( example ). You never know what you might come across that will suit your van. And I just know you've read the thread on this forum about Stop Turn Tail Lights - haven't you?! cheers, Al. |

Hi STGL,
try Landrover Defender rear lights, same style, cheap as chips, they use normal globes so you can fit stop and tail into the one light, reproduction ones should be easily available.
Try a quick Google search, if you have trouble let me know and I will chase some up in Melbourne.

Struth, cobber, those Narva lights have come down in price since I last looked some time back! I know Blackwoods used to list the Hella 2370 version a while back, but price was up around $90 each back then. They don't show up in a search now, so I guess they don't stock them anymore. In fact, the Hella version doesn't show up for sale anywhere in a Google search, which kind of makes the NOS set I've got rather "priceless" . cheers, Al. |
