Congratulations on your acquisition, that is a nice attractive van you have. I can't help but think that a lot of the style and construction features of that van are very similar to our Wayfarer which makes me ask the question `Which manufacturer actually made the van?? I wonder if your van is a example of period badge engineering? I hope that you enjoyed the challenge of the recovery, the damage should be a relatively easy fix from what I can see. Keep the story and photos coming. Koala

Hi sgtl, Great old Franklin you have there, one of the early ones with varnished cupboards, plastic ceiling, seperate flywire door and no kitchen window. This wa a common layout in all manufacturers vans back then,Viscount even had versions up to 25 ft with the 2 side bunks like yours. Canโt wait to see your work on it,you always do a fantastic job! Cheers hughdeani

So you've finally found a monster van!! They really are a nice shape! So is that look from Mr SGTL going to be a taste of pics to come??? Remembr that restoring a large caravan is no different that a small one. Same sorts of things to fix, but the pieces are bigger! I can see this van being ready for another road trip in 6 months' time!! Have fun.

G'day sgtl,
Heck, I don't think you and Mr sgtl need any help to fix up this van. You guys have OCD (obsessive caravan disorder), and seem to get through your projects at a cracking pace!
Have you found the chassis number on the drawbar yet?? Judging by the tail lights, I'm thinking you'll be finding some numbers followed by the letter C or D.
Congrats on finding another great example of an early Franklin. Can't readily think of any other early Franklin tandem van on the forum over the years, so it is your solemn duty to bring this one back to factory condition!
cheers, Al.

cannot decipher the drawbar at all at this stage. Written inside every cupboard in pencil is 892.

Hi Shesgotthelook I remember when paintstripping all my cupboards in the 63 viscount every single one had n1290 written in pencil on them , at the time the draw bar was so rusted i could only make out some numbers & bits missing on others that matched n1290 , my thoughts are 892 is your draw bar number , hope this helps , ps nice looking van regards Al.

Hi SGTL, Well you've been looking for a tandem for a while. Looks like you may have found it - depending on what you find when you really get stuck into it, and what's required to get it back into shape, I guess. As Alprov has commented, it seems almost certain that '892' is the serial number, but if it's a 1962 van as the thread subject states then I would expect the full serial number will be '892C'. If the serial number is just '892' then that would mean it was built prior to 1960. I would have thought that was too early for it to be sporting Franklin's initial style of wrap around front windows, but who knows? I will be interested to hear what you discover when you find the full serial number on the A-frame. Hope you're treating that as a priority? I'm sure you've got nothing more important to do... Very long shot but does anyone know where I can get vinyl squares in colours other than black, grey, white or brown? Have these two samples of vinyl sheet from Polyflor but it doesn't come in a tile.

If you have a business locally with an industrial guillotine you could have the vinyl cut into pieces. From memory, someone else did that years ago!

G'day sgtl,
There's an interesting post in 2013 about different coloured tiles... Wonder where Mark and Leanne got them from??
Plus these other threads...
Following on from what Ray Roehme said above, my memory from years ago on this forum, is that someone said they had cut 300mm x 300mm vinyl tiles down to 9"x9" squares using a table saw. But, I'm blowed if I can find the post relating to that.
cheers, Al.

Snuck over to the shed to take some more pics of the rot & it was gone! (the rot that is). Really incredible, considering my retired 80yo builder man Noel is quite unwell. I wasn't going to get him to help me on this one but he insisted he'd rather be doing something other than sitting at home contemplating when his time is up.

Arghhh. Found the perfect hub caps, only to discover back wheel has a longer hub than the front wheel. What hub caps do I need? They are 14โ tyres.
