Hi lovelies,
I haven't been on the forum for a while. My husband is terminally ill and have been focussing on seeing family and all the paperwork and medical processes.
Unfortunately I have not touched the caravan for a while and probably won't happen until after.
So, with regret, I am unable to attend the Nationals this year but know the van will be complete, one day...to be continued...
Hope all goes will with the Nationals. I look forward to seeing the pics.
Take care on the trip.
Kerri

Hi Kerri Good to hear from you. Judy and I were only recently commenting that we had not heard from you. Hang in there, you will get that van finished one day, there will always be other events to attend.

Morning @koala
Thank you for your thoughts. Yep, husband and family first, then van.
I know everyone will have a fantastic time at the Nationals.

Hi everyone, I'm back and motivated to complete my van. Unfortunately I had to hire someone but the internal timber work, roof and water sealant all should be done in a couple of days. I know I would take forever and I don't have forever. Fortunately, the chap is a 2nd year apprentice carpenter and is actually apprentice of the year. Cool, I got a good one at only 19 years old. Anyway, he worked with metal today and it was the very first time and fortunately he is also keen to complete the van with me. So, during a windy day, we straightened the big side wall and will attack the roof tomorrow. Here are the photos from today. As you can see, the wall was a bit slump due to the weight of the roof, about 40mm. With great advice from tooleyau, we were able to align the wall. Yay. 20180414_125350 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180414_105819 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180414_133511 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180414_133518 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr

The whole van is exposed to the elements and it is about to rain. The caravan cover is ripped and all on the ground now. It is about to rain. Holy crap.

Hi,
Can anyone put up an image of the interior hatch. I need to see what it looks like with the wood around the inside of the hatch and if there is a trim over it before the fly screen is on it.
Thanks Kerri

There have been a few recipes here over the years, but I don't think there is any magical formula other than "Elbow Grease"

Kerri - If you find somewhere for Elbows can you see if they also sell Knees and Shoulders - Please post. Rattles PS a wire wheel in an electric Drill, see example below (Most Junk Shops sell them) will work as it is the inside and a few scratches will not matter. Just do not press Hard or for Long Rattles

Make sure you have some H/Duty gloves, I would expect the compound to be like oven cleaner, if it works? Let us know.

Hi Mustang, Yes, I bought some heavy duty gloves. I use them for the paint stripping as well. Thanks for the thought. Kerri

Hi. I'm a little bit stuck. I am up to re-facing the cupboards and looking at the original design. Basically from left to right - one small door, one original gap with a base and little rail, then another gap, then one big long door, then another gap and then one last door. I can see the original hinges for the doors but there seems to be too many gaps along the cupboards above the kitchen. Can someone help with some photos... murray for example. Kerri

I can't believe the caravan is starting to look like a caravan. We have completed the ply for the inside, including the hatch and wardrobe. I had to hire a tradie but he is very proud of himself and so he should be. He is now thinking of buying one for himself and do it up. I cut all the ply by hand including the holes for the cupboards. Here are some pics of the new inside. It's a bit patchy, but you will never know when it is finished. 20180424_144218 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180424_144206 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180424_144239 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180424_144228 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180424_144246 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180424_144317 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180424_144326 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr 20180424_144340 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr

Ok lovelies, I have spent most of the day researching which is the best way to get the 1963 silicone off. After advice from facebook, here is the result.
1. Silicone remover - Bunnings - Didn't do a thing. Had to do an extra thick layer which would have cost the earth for the whole van.
2. Nail polish remover - Home - Did the best result. It kept the silicone hard so I could just scrape it off in one piece.
3. Acetone solvent - Supercheap - This product softens the silicone. This worked but I have a ribbed aluminium and it caught in between the diamond pattern and not easy to get out as it was soft. I even tried a scrubbing brush to get it out of the grooves, but no good. I even let the solvent stay on longer.
4. Petrol - home - This worked ok as it kept the silicone hard but still a whole lot of elbow grease.
5. Orange glue remover - Again, made the silicone soft and was not appropriate.
6. Brass brush and drill - home - This worked but need to be aware of scratches around the edge of the aluminium. We then got the fine steel wool from Bunnings and went over the scratches. This worked and will also clean and shine the aluminium, just a touch. We don't want to be looking into a mirror.
So, the winner is.....
Brush and drill, less elbow grease needed and quick as a flash.

Ok. I have a dilema and need advice. The 'above' kitchen cupboard doors are all different and unable to find the original hinges. If I draw out the original template, it's all over the shop. Does not look like any originals I have seen of other valiants. So I thought I would go with the design in the pic, 5 cupboards. My question is, is there too many cupboards for 298.8cm for the whole length. Viscount 1960 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr Or should I do 4 large cupboards as I have also seen. Which will mean more stable space between the cupboards. Viscount 1963 by Kerri Insley, on Flickr Decision time. Help!

G'day kerri,
Larger overhead doors means easier access to the contents in the cupboard. The downside is that larger doors that lift up means a heavier weight you have to hold up with one hand, while trying to remove the contents with the other. I would recommend you consider a means of making the doors hold themselves up when opened, either by using friction stays or similar. I often have to hold the two front overhead doors open, using my head to rest them on, while I rummage inside the cupboard with both hands to get what I'm looking for. If I had my time over again, I would install some method of keeping the doors in the open position to keep both my hands free.
cheers, Al.

Morning Al.
All this info is so important. All the things I wouls never think of. I like my head, but not holding up a cupboard door.
In regards to the size. It will be pretty much the same size door whether I do 4 or 5 of them.
I will add the stay up things you nentioned. Thanks for this info.

OK, so I will be getting the J-trim from Capral but when I measured it to the 'true to size' picture, mine was 2mm shorter on the 7.92mm edge. So mine is 5.92mm. Is that going to matter?
