Thanks for the update Daggsey and carrots I have just spent the last 10 minutes fixed to the 'puter screen absorbing every photo . All i have to say is... That you are in the middle of REAL AUSTRALIA. You are travelling through countryside that is the very essence of what has made Australia great and given it its character. Even though we have some beautiful coastline right around Australia , its not until you head inland that you come to appreciate what our forefathers saw as being "The Lucky country". Dusty and dry as it may be , it is very unique Camping by any river in total isolation . peace and serenity is priceless Take your time and soak it all up........you lucky buggers . Reddo

Hi Daggsey Bro just sent me this...he thought it might be appropriate seeing as though you are in the area referred to in the verse... Penned by Graham Connors and performed recently at West Leagues Club here in Newcastle by Graham and the legendary Eric Bogle ( Famous for "And the band played waltzing Matilda") Bro reckons there wasnt a dry eye in the concert hall. Verse certainly reflects what we are seeing nowadays... Where have the real Aussies gone ? Or more to the point..... where is our culture heading.... Kids wearing Baseball caps, Nikes and Oakley .. What the...... Regards Reddo

Well put Reddo......... ;D ;D OK folks, Lady Maddona is back on line (that "forum maintenance" certainly has put me behind ). Whilst sojourning in Longreach, we encountered the Heard brothers & sister, who, as grandchildren of Charlie Heard, were re-creating the 1930 "Longest Taxifare in the World".......Geelong to Darwin, back through western Queensland and down the east coast to Geelong........ www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2007/s2244843.htm ....one of Australia's unsung pioneers........ Before moving on, the compulsory lane crawl through Longreach....no vintage vans, however....... A visit to the impressive Longreach railway station........... Eventually, Lady Madonna moved on, heading east on the Capricorn Highway towards Rockhampton. Barcaldine beckoned......... One of the many pubs in the main street............... home of the (once) Tree of Knowledge, Labor Party heartland..... historic Freemasons Lodge...... a "Queenslander".............. a treasure waiting to be restored....... camping at the Recreation grounds is recommended...........some visiting wildlife...... A rest-stop for lunch at Alice River............... On to Jericho..............some real treasures here............. CWA..... another sister for Lady Madonna........... this got me real excited........ ;D ;D ;D ;D.....dunno 'bout the plastic wheel trims........................ on to Alpha and an overnight stop at Bogantungan.....not much left, (one permanent resident and occasional railway workers) but nice little free camping spot......must get some serious rain at some stage................. Wether it be building, cars, trucks, railways, pubs etc i can wander about and sift through that stuff for hours while the tourists line up around the corner to pay to look through a museum A tandem Tinnie... Gristy didja see that ... Not that far from home... 3000K...up and back in 2 days..... too easy ;D Love the Z car ute and FE/FC ute both look like good restorer projects Them "outback seagulls" ( Brolgas) look like they could do with a feed... have a go how skinny thier legs are. OO roo - old mate Reddo

G'day Daggsey,
Another great set of photos for us all to enjoy. You're certainly covering some interesting ground.
What has happened to the Tree of Knowledge site? Is the four sided banner on the actual location of the original tree, and was anything done with the timber?

A bit of attention to detail last week to Effacy (service, visit to Pedders for shockies & spring bushes) and "Lady Madonna" needed a new set of tyres (already ....7000 miles and the Indo..si.n Bridg..t.ne light trucks are starting to seriously wear and bubble........now fitted with 8 ply radials). Will definitely update soon...... Daggsey

Hi All, Well we've been blessed with Lady Madonna & her occupiers presence for the last few days. When Carrots flew back from the west & finally arrived here, she found that Daggsey hadn't removed his coffee Shop sign ( He put it up to attract the local birds from our adjoining Industrial estate) The girls decided to sneak out to play the pokies, & left us in charge of the washing up. It took a while to work out how to do it, But we finally got it done & decided to stop for a drink. Lifes hard up here in Paradise Daggsey & Carrots are having a hard earned coupla days rest before travelling again JBJ

Calling all Cars.. Calling all Cars. Please be on the look out for drifting Gypsys in old clapped out Holden towing large metalic object. Last seen or heard of at Coledale Hieghts late october. Crime committed: Lack of reports from Lady Madonna travels. They may have an alibi : If Madonna hasnt "travelled" we cant charge them with anything .. There is no crime in staying at Coledale... Luck buggers. ;D

G'day Reddo, Just checked on the crystal ball and see you were wondering about the whereabouts of the "Bridgetown Bedouins"......yes, we are still enzconz, ensconzed camped at Coledale, spiritual home of the Vintage Van Nationals . Have had to undertake some werk, wirk, gainful employment.............shocking workshop conditions Thought about going fishing in this, but lack of mechanical and or manual propulsion sort of knocked that idea on the head........ Oh well, back to more traditional methods...... ;D ;D ;D ;D Time hasn't been totally wasted........been spotting these every day (seen one, seen em all ;D ;D) Been plane spotting as well....................dunno if this is what Earlee cut his teeth on No wonder ya can't catch anything when this happens............... Best get some rest from all this activity and do an update on this thread.....now where were we.......that's right, somewhere near Rockhampton........it's all got a bit out of sinc over the past few months Daggsey

Geez Louise.......I didn't realise how far behind I was updating this thread........it is hard to imagine it was in July when we were travelling on the Capricorn Highway, east towards Rockhampton ........how time flies when you're having fun and so much vintage van events happening as well! I've been thrown well out of sinc by forum closure, stopovers at Sutcac's, Earlee's and JBJ's as well as Rockstock Helidon, Pottsville, East Coast Spring Tour and Coledale........ Ok, back to the story.......... On the way to Emerald, we had a stopover at Willow Tree Gem Fields.......tidy little caravan park there with easy access to nearby sapphire fossiking area........weather was overcast, so locating gemstones is made all that much harder.......... These couple of onsite vans were for sale..... Restorable ;D Emerald was the next stop.......an interesting town, but a little commercialised and not many old buildings left.......nearby Fairbairn Dam is impressive....an awesome water resource.... And so, onto Rockhampton...........a city of 60,000 plus people with lots to see, including some great architecture............ Botanical Gardens is a must-see................ This huge fig is spectacular......it just keeps going and going....... Archer Park Railway Station also worth a visit........home of the only remaining steam tram in Australia........... Rockhampton from Mt Archer........ The (other) mighty Fitzroy River at Rocky......... Warning on the edge of the Fitzroy at the caravan park where we stayed.........pretty smart crocodiles that know where their boundary is ;D ;D ;D ;D...... That's enough for now......more to follow Daggsey

Glad to see the update Daggsey Local rumour in Emerald is that there are two bulldozers at the bottom of the Fairbairn dam wall Couldn't get them out so left them there Find any gems in Emerald Rockhampton is a town steeped in history and the workmanship on some of those sandstone buildings is amazing The Old Customs house is one such building (The round front building in your photos) Key-stoned arches throughout, the ballistrating is also very old world and nicely done. Some of the workmanship in these old buildings shows great skill when they only had basic tools Lived down that way in the early 90's Keep the photos coming it's a trip down memory lane and very interesting Cheers Atog

Hi Daggsey,
Great to see the Lady Madonna travelogue resume. I was beginning to think that maybe one of the V V'ers down south was keeping you captive until you'd done all their signwriting for them. ;D ;D ;D
Some fantastic pics once again. Keep them coming.

Thanks for the update Daggsey & Carrots, one or both of you know how to take photos of the things that give a real feel for the places you visit.. and bring back memories for those of us who have been there before. My Mother worked at that heritage Hotel when she was a girl... 90 years ago.
Cobber.

Hi Daggsey
Glad to see your still on the road and having a good time.
When I was a youngster we use to stay in Anne St W Rocky, spent a lot of time in the Gardens. Owned a queenslander in west street for a while, it was a quaint little place half the size of the one you photographed.
I have seen croc's in the river down stream from the caravan park. Don't feed em, they come back for more.

G'day folks, Chrissie & New Year out of the way, so I can get serious again about updating this thread......... In Rockhampton, firefighter put us in contact with a friend of his who was extremly obliging and intent on showing us around........this was a friend of hers' Austin 7 which is stored and transported in a horsefloat ..... It was strongly recommended that we visit the Rockhampton Historic Village..........some interesting exhibits here including this recently acquired little beauty....... This early bus................ An inspection of the workshop where volunteers with a passion restore all manner of things and where there is room to store vintage vehicles awaiting restoration......... A famous Rockhampton landmark.........the Customs House building........... More to follow................ Daggsey
