Gee Daggsey,
I don't know how you cope with the torture you put yourself through! And you're still smiling. Amazing... ;D ;D ;D

CONGRATULATIONS DAGGSEY !!!! You are now the owner of the most viewed thread in the history of Vintage Caravans.COM........... and that's saying something. On the way home I'd like you to call into "Cocklebiddy Caves" and spend the night there if you would please.... I did... but I've got lousy photos of the occasion..... and it was a surreal occasion, surrounded by absolutely nothing..... but I need decent photos of the place sooooooo Cobber.

Wishing you Happy returns dudes. Lady Madonnas Travels is the "Book" i open when everything in life is falling down around me. If i have had a crap day at work and thoughts turn to running away from it all, I simply press the "power" button on the old Hewlitt Packard and tune in to the adventures of Daggsey and Carrots... It has become a total release from the everyday ho-hum / mundane way of life most of us here on the forum have fallen into . Most of us have that "Gypsy" in the blood that tells us to.... "Just do it"... Most of us get to that 49% convinced we are going... then start taking life too seriously again and back away from "letting lifes handbrake off" Before we know it we will be too old to do it..... .. travel that is. If that ever happens to me.... welllllllllllllllll .. at least i can come back to this thread at page one and pretend.. voyer and enjoy your well documented trip..... Thanks for the memories. Enjoyed your company for the short period you stayed at Barnsley, Munmorah and Coledale. Drive safe across the Nullaboring. The old Holden will pin its ears back and gallop home dragging Lady Madonna along like the preverbial Bakers horse hauling and empty cart Reddo.

10th November, 2009 Don Ricardo............it has been tortourus, taughtorus...difficult......occasionally I've had to have a long weekend and take the odd Monday off to go fishing Roehm3108..............I'll leave the pinning or whatever of the thread up to the moderators......having said that, I believe that JBJ's restoration of "Lucille" should possibly be one thread that is pinned.......it is a thread that should also not be lost, but preserved as inspiration for anyone undertaking a project. Reddo.............meeting people like yourself and many others on the forum through this "network" has been the most enjoyable part of our whole journey.........I would like to think that lifelong freindships have been made and without putting too fine a point on it, whilst some of us have had "our personality clashes" over the past 5 years (most of which have been resolved amicably ), without the inspiration of Mark T in starting this silly idea, none of this would have been possible........ You're probably right about "Effacy" having it's ears pinned back crossing the Nullabor........it'll only be caused by a westerly wind and not the desire to rush home Cobber..................there certainly wasn't any intention on creating records on the forum when this thread was started.....purely something I thought may have been of interest to people........and yes, we will call at Cocklebiddy Caves and take some photos for you (might even find your knitting needles there ;D ;D ;D).......... Geoff & Jude ............I've still got the opportunity to turn right when we head back to the Eyre Highway........ Meanwhile, back at Fowlers Bay we decided it was such a grouse spot, we have stayed an extra day.......... Spotted this "legless lizard" ;D ;D ;D ;D going about his business.................. Carrots was a real girl and thought that it might be safer in the water .......... As an aside, anyone out there who is seriously looking for a "sea-change", the Fowlers Bay Caravan Park, kiosk/general store with residence is for sale for 500 big ones.............gotta be good value when you consider what a house on a small block in suburbia is worth.............(the building to the right in the photo is not the residence....it is a motel)...................... See ya's in Eucla Daggsey

hi daggsey,
sorry to hear the bearing went. They go in all sorts of places.. Our Dodge chucked one at Mount Gambier.
I.ve just had the diff checked & rebuilt, & they found the housing twisted slightly with a crack in it on the LHS, the side that eats bearings.
Stick with it, some of us accept tilt trays, some dont. You & your Holden have proved themselves many times over.
I dont believe its a shame to tilt tray broken vehicles & or vans. I elect to pay for my insurance & if something happens I'm only too happy to take their money.
But we are all different. Good on you for sticking to your principles in the heat, dust, remoteness, with us others sticking to ours in airconditioned truck cabs,& all the luxuries.
Hope the parts were easily found, & made the last part of your trip as you had looked forward to..

Hi jbj, I reckon if you are under a time constraint or in a situation that is possibly beyond self-retrieval (stuck on the Nullabor or M7), resorting to motoring insurance is a good thing . (and yes, we do have RAC Premium cover). I guess after such a journey as we have undertaken, my pride wouldn't let me have the whole kit and caboodle trailered home 168kms My thoughts were, limping gingerly into a small country town, the chances of finding what is needed to get an old Holden back on the road is still reasonably high, despite the activities over the past few years of the "metal miners" and guess what....................my calculation was proven right ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Met an "old-fashioned" mechanic yesterday who had a "car dump" on his parent's rural property..........I had the choice of an axle and bearing from an EH, HD and HR ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D. It's all good and we should be heading home today As an aside, I fitted 2 new rear tyres in Roma, Qld.....the young tyre fitter commented that he thought a wheel-bearing might be on it's way out and sent me to a mechanic in a "speed shop". He looked at the angle of the wheel without jacking the car up and said "tell 'em at Bridgestone they're dreamin" Heard a niggling noise like an out of round brake drum all the way to Broken Hill.......took the car to the local Holden dealer........couple of young "mechanics" there (20 years younger than the car, so I suppose they're called auto technicians nowdays) said they couldn't pick the problem and referred me to a slightly older mechanic who worked on "older" cars. His prognosis was a possible "out of round" brake-drum (at least he jacked it up ). We set off across the Nullabor with a noise that I still had in the back of my mind was a wheel-bearing on it's way out, but convinced myself it was an out of round brake drum Just proves you can't always rely on the "experts" Now, let's see if we can't complete the final 168kms ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Daggsey

Hi Chris,
Once there is a noise in one wheel I suspect wheel bearings.
Just got the Dodge 9' diff looked at as I knew I had a re occuring wheel bearing problem on LHS.
Went to pick it up. $1200.
Guy replaced diff housing (Secondhand) with new brackets fitted, both axle bearings & seals, lh rear brake shoes , crown wheel & pinion (Secondhand), & all new associated bearings.
Apparently the entire unit was stuffed. But it still drove & stopped well, with no noticeable noises,
So now it has recoed 351, recoed c4 auto, recoed 9" diff & new 3 core radiator, & recoed power steering pump. Boy it drives well.
Start on metal body repairs Monday week.
The old girl wont know itself soon.
Good to see you,re nearly home.
Your soles of your feet will get that funny feeling pretty soon I reckon.

Hello, I am not a vintage vanner(have a more modern van) but enjoy this site and what people do to preserve the past.
I would say over the past 12 to 18 months I have enjoyed this thread more than any other single topic on the internet...including the many unclad delectible ladies you can find. I find all your photo,s of your trip are of subjects that (old cars/caravans/buildings/scenery etc) I really enjoyed seeing. I think a collection is in order so you may go forth and keep us all entertained again. Well done, no better post ever made on any forum to my mind. Regards Alan.

Hi peoples......
Thanks for the comments...........we are at home, still on wireless broadband, waiting for the landline to be re-instated.............funnily enough, after all the postings I have done on our travels, wireless internet is so slow here at home (only 4kms from town) that uploading the last of the photos of our travels would be extremely painful.......

Serves you right for going home I say! ;D Fancy leaving all of us with nothing to look each week anymore... Lucky there's a nice holiday period straight after Christmas... Maybe you could accidentally leave the car and van pointing down hill with the handbrake barely on and have to go running after it and end up on another trip? Very grateful for the images and inspiration... A while ago someone mentioned plotting the trip... I will over the coming weeks, revisit all the thread pages and summarise the locations, then plot them on a separate VV members Location Map for everyone to see. Will take a bit of time as I have to read through ALLL of your endless ramblings ;D to get to the important bits... But i will enjoy every minute of it.. Thanks once again for enjoying yourself for so long and motivating me and I'm sure others to at least do something similar, even if only in my own State. It's gotta be better than a trip to Bali... Cheers Chris

Hi Daggsey & Carrots,
It has been great to read your threads since we met you at Mt Carbine in QLD 5 months ago, we have lived vicariously through your adventure, wishing it was ours and enjoyed the great photo's of your trip. With all the old cars, old caravans, pubs and our great country side even though our caravan is 20 years old and not pre 70 we have a new appreciation for the older caravans. Have you settled back into some routine yet or just planning your next little adventure?
We started planning our next trip on the way home from Cape York but with 4 differing opinions where to go it has proved a bit difficult.
Cheers, Stephen,CathyTrevor & Helen. Touraroundoz
