Attn all. Below is a copy of the article that will appear in LEADED Magazine Edition 12 due out in Late April to May. Thanks to Sutcac for some editing but I added a bit more after that. As you can see I had a great weekend so will definately be at the next QLD one. Rod G. VINTAGE CARAVANNING Finding that Classic car you desire is hard enough, but finding a classic caravan to match is impossible. So I thought ! In my search for ideas on my teardrop camper I stumbled on the Vintage Caravan group www.vintagecaravans.com.au and began communicating with members who hid behind creative code names. I decided to join the group on their first trip to Mooloolaba on 8-10 February and see what vintage caravans were all about. With a little apprehension about meeting these codenamed members I ventured up the highway in my yellow Hillman Hunter and matching teardrop and arrived at the Ettamogah Pub on the Sunshine Coast to meet Pete and Trish with their immaculate black FJ Holden and matching Sunliner van, Paul and Yoko (Phargan) with their diminutive Hunter Minor bondwood and then “Jail Bar Juice” and his wife Sue with the Ford powered hot rod and another Sunliner. Nothing could have prepared me for how friendly and interesting these people and their vans were. Our escape from Ettamogah was delayed while tourists and locals alike admired the vans and cars before we headed off in convoy towards Mooloolaba. A long wait for a green light upset the officials at the local bowls club as all bowling stopped while players gawked at the vans and cars as we passed. As we arrived at the park the Schultze’s Chev Blitz Army truck and teardrop were first in view and then Dossie’s newly restored 50’s “DON” and matching Humber Super Snipe. As we set up Sutcat (Clyde & Barb) arrived in the EH Premier with Fugly, a one of five expandable timber vans that would test the patience of today’s carpenters and cabinet makers, for it’s unique folding extensions and precise carpentry joins. After some setting up, Earlee’s arrival in his 1964 Franklin signaled that it was beer o’clock and I had the chance to inspect the vans a little closer. The vans were all presented exceptionally well and as I admired David & Ilse Dossie’s DON. I was told it had been purchased as a wreck but it was the complete opposite now. From the outside paint to the inside watertank, period camera and toaster, to the polished timber floors, leadlight windows and mandatory flying ducks on the wall, this van was 11 out of 10. The local newspaper took some photos of the DON which appeared in page 3 of the Saturday paper and it was obvious many readers agreed as they ventured down from Mooloolaba central to view the vans. It was like open house as people of all ages inspected the cars and vans as cameras clicked away. Even a young boy asked if he could have his photo taken in the Hunter (obviously growing up with class), while others crawled over and under the Blitz. . Saturday saw the arrival of several more vans that looked so tiny compared to their modern counterparts, while still offering the comforts and feel of relaxing into yesteryear. On the social side, most ventured to the local pub for dinner on Friday while Saturday night was a barbeque at the camp ground. The Mooloolaba campground must be one of the few parks still running with a surf frontage and provided a great location for everyone to appreciate how camping was in the past and should really be , - relaxing. This was by far the best weekend I had experienced in a long time so maybe the race car (Sunbeam Rapier) will stay parked while I enjoy a different style of classic motoring. For more info visit www.vintagecaravans.com (Australia wide members) or if you see a vintage van that is longing for some TLC email rod@leadedmagazine.com.au and I will forward the info onto the local members. Rod G. Ps. You don’t need a classic car to enjoy classic caravanning. Vintage caravans are loosely defined as being pre 1970 in build or style hence my homemade 3 year old teardrop is now a part of the group. Visit the website for tips on restoration, social events and classified adds that could see you end up joining this classic fraternity.

Great pictures Dosse, I see you chose the two most important vans to photograph. Did you get the Humber handbook OK?? Regards, Paul & Yoko

Great shots Dennis. I didnt realise that the metropolis was so close behind the van park. I bet the developers would love to sink their claws into that bit of real estate. Your sunliner is coming up a million dollars. Also love the shot of your truck and the Blitz together. Two "way out" tow vehicles. ;D ;D ;D ;D Reddo

hi all,
I rang Sharlene & talked to her. I gathered that they buy & sell a few old vans. She emailed pix of the blue kennedy, & I confirmed it as around 1960 Kennedy, & probably not quite as as rare as she seemed to think. BUT phone discussions can be difficult to interpret.
