Well trendsetters, the next Vintage Caravan Nations will be held at Mt Gambier South Australia commencing on Sunday March the 16th 2008 and concluding on Thursday March the 20th. This event is to be similar to the Morgan SA event as held this year. This event is expected to be HUGE, with a record turnout of vintage caravans and classic cars Australiawide. LETS MAKE THIS THE BIGGEST EVER There's only 72 weeks to go , so its highly recommended that all our members start saving $4 per day from this Monday the 16th October towards this great event ......thats only a coffee 'n a bit a day ($4) .......this will put about $2000 in YOUR kitty towards YOUR costs. The event format will be as follows: No organisation No itinery No daily programme No trophies No rules ......only guidelines no secretary's, presidents, treasurers, committee members .......nothing. and we'll all need to comply with .........whatever The theme will be: LETS HAVE FUN But, there is one formality, bookings at the Mt. Gambier caravan park are essential. Does anybody know what the caravan park is like there? TO THOSE WHO MISSED OUT ON THE FANTISTIC TIME WE HAD AT MORGAN ......DO NOT MISS THIS EVENT .....IT WILL BE THE BEST EVER..... Mark

HMmmm the caravan park in Mt Gambier. Now, Casting my mind back about 28 years we camped there in a tent. How do I remember this? it was because the caravan park was on the side of the steepest hill ever seen in a caravan park and we literally were camping at a 45 degree angle. In the morning when we woke we were all at the bottom end of the tent in a dog pile. Lucky me was on the bottom. All my mother could say was, "lucky the door was zipped tight otherwise we may have all ended up in the big blue lake" ;D

Sorry I just posted "nothing" I do have blond hair now !!!!! Sounds really good. :)I see a few FC owners linking these events . The only problem is we don't tow the van behind the FC :(it may not make it all that way. We would love a powered site. We have stayed at Blue Lake Holiday Park in September last year, a very nice park with indoor BBQ area ;)etc. Please don't tell our Chev we are heading back there as last time we had a rear universal joint collapse on the approach to the caravan Park. There will be more discussion this weekend at Coledale. Ticko's

I read that first post and wondered why Mt Gambier and why so far ahead? Fcdriver has hit on the reason why, methinks..
Ditsy.. Mt Gambier is situated on a volcano near the SA/Vic border. The volcano hasn’t erupted for a while, but who knows when the next time might be.
It’s said the Blue Lake (the one that changes colour) is so deep no one has determined just how deep. One wonders how many concrete booted swimmers have ventured into it.
There are four or five caravan parks in and around Mt Gambier. Our experience was similar to Scootmans, but I can’t remember which park it was, it was quite a few years ago as well.

Sounds GOOD to me Mark. Cathy and I already have 6 weeks holidays booked with the Boss. We were planning ( ) on dragging the cubbyhouse across for the FE,FC Nats. This way we might be able to cruise across the Nullabor in a vintage caravan convoy. PARTY for four days with the caravan mob... THEN ...PARTY four more days with the car guys ;D ;D ;D not so sure it will sound to good to Cathy though (but I've already booked the SPA room for the FE.FC weekend so I might just get away with it )

Great location Mark Plenty to see and do in the Mount. Had a great time in Morgan and would recomend that everybody goes. Count me in. Anyone travelling from the West can crash at my joint for the night and we can go south in tow. I've already put away $4 Cheers retro1

thanks Adam.
I didn't know there's 5 caravan parks in Mt Gambier, so I'll do some homework on them and put a post on the forum as to which park we'll use.

Mark Use this page from Badgers Caravan park reports. home.vicnet.net.au/~badger04/parks_s0.htmThey are reports from vanners and not taken from glossy brochures, ok they may not use VV's but they are vanners. You will find reports about all five parks. Greg

Hi Mark & Ditzy, could you please put us down for a powered site ( wouldn't even mind an ensuite if possible). We folks from Grays Point love our luxury!!!!. Geoff will be well and truly retired by then and we will incorporate Mt Gambier into whatever trip we may be on at that time - let us know when it is all sorted if we need to send a deposit - thanks Jude

Hi Kaybee, The idea deserves looking at. Just my thought. The question is..How many of us are there for the FE FC nationals? ....Definatly not the majority!!! Whilst I will be there for the FCs 50th I can,t see any trouble running the two events together. Keeping in mind we are only a group of private people who relax and do our own thing. I have no trouble either way. There may be one night that the dinner may clash, but this is no concern to most of the V Vers. Over to the you fellow V Vaners. Bruce

Kaybee says:
"Seems a little odd that we're expected to sod off home for Easter, it also means that many people who would like to attend may not be able to get time off for both events if they are staged seperately and will have to choose one or the other. It also means that you will be travelling home in peak tourist season/traffic, accomodation"
Col, for alot of us attending Nationals, there is 3 to 4 days travelling involved (those from WA & QLD), wheres members from SA & Vic only have 1 to 2 days travelling, therefore, mid week seemed like a good idea, after all, it worked well at Morgan. WA folk for instance, would be able to use the Easter break to return home if necessary.
Quote: "Feels like we are the poor second cousins and are expected to disappear before the guests arrive"
The FE FC Holden Nationals are a highly organised events with associated costs, and pre committment to the event is essential. The host club has a huge outlay (thousands of dollars) to stage the event, and recoup their costs via lots of sponsorship and participant contribution.
To my understanding, the FE FC Nationals are not open shows, I could be wrong, but I believe it is only for FE and FC Holdens, unlike the Hot Rod Nationals that followed Morgan, whereby alot of our vehicles qualified for the event.
But obviously, we vintage vanners that stay on for Easter can spectate their show & shines etc, and those of us with a FE or FC Holden, can enter.
Tony Galea may like to comment here. This post of course is open for discussion, and we can alter dates, we have plenty of time .......
So, keep your thoughts coming .......
cheers
Mark

Hi, we live 10 minutes drive from Mount Gambier, there are a lot of caravan parks, but there is also a big showgrounds which they held the big bus rally at here last year. It holds about a thousand buses and they could be willing to let it out again for something like this, you need to contact the local A and H society to find out or if you are interested in all staying at the same place we could find out for you, just let us know. We have a 68 Chevy impala and a newly aquired 60's Carapark Zestline 16/2 which we intend to have finished by then. Let us know if we can be of any help since we live so close, Cheers, Sandy and Jerry.

Hi Yah All, Just thinking if the vintage van nationals were to be held at the same time as the FC Nationals at Mt gambier some of us could offer our vans for a photo shoot with some of the FCs & FEs behind their cars. Never know this may help them (fe & fc owners) to take an interest in vit vans & preserve one for themselves. I know not all vin vaners would like to see their vans photographed with someone else's car but for those that don't mind this could quite possibly be arranged. ....Or is this a silly idea?.... Also if Will & Lyn are in attendance the S A fe fc car club could hire Will & Lyn for their dinner night. After seeing Will & Lyn in action, helped by Reddo I am sure their professional showmanship would be a great choice. Hint Hint to the organizers in S A ...(hope I'm not out of order) Vintage vans old Holdens and many other old cars running around, now just add Rock & Roll....Mt Gambier will Rock. I for one have allready done my leave application for 2008. So many good things to look forward to !!!!! Isn't it great to have old vans & old cars....and to top it off a wife who at times finds it hard to understnd vint vans but is prepared to have a go at it with me. Better go I'm getting carried away... Bruce ....fcdriver

Hi all. Took me 3 days and 2 nights to get to Morgan from Newcastle. Will probably take around the same plus a bit to Mt gambier 2008. I for one can only cop so much vinatge van perving and would like to vote for running the 2nd OZ van nats from Thurs throughout easter to Monday. would mean taking 2 days A/L the week leading up to and probably all the week after easter. I am lucky to be able to shuffle roster days etc around so it would probably mean only taking about 4 annual leave days off to cover near a fortnights holiday. ... Cooooooool. With so much notice in advance you would be a mug not to swing some sort of a deal with your boss by easter 2008. I as a driver of the superior EK Holden suppose i could force myself to mix with those poor unfortunates that have to slum it in FCs and FEs. ;D With a mixture of .. Site seeing, Vintage vanning with "National Celebritys", The FE /FC nats , Vintage tin hunting, Antique shops, Cruising the local strips, Frequenting drinking establishments ( a must do event), repairing broken Fords, mingling with the indigenous locals( female preferably), and sharing traditions ... like pass the flagon, Collecting fire wood that is proving too difficult for the "upperclass" in thier fancy utes to collect. . I am sure that i can keep myself occupied over the easter break . The issue of dinner together one night is no big deal. Those of us that dont end up at the Gala or should that read "Galah" fc/fe presentations can head for a local club/pub or hang at camp and order a stack of pizzas washed down with a cool ale .. or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5 . Perhaps we could slaughter a goat and dance naked splattered in blood around the campfire... maybe slice up an uppity maltese terrier of two... They always make great sacrificial offerings and would please more than just the gods.;D As for entertainment. The pub at Morgan was great , as was the surf club doo at Coledale. but in all fairness to Will and Lyn i think we should let them have the weekend off. If ya seen how much room their gear takes up in the effy and the effort that they put intop setting up/packing up i am sure you would agree its a big ask to cart all that gear around for one nights entertainment. Its thier holiday too remember and we may not be able to find a venue for the kareoke anyway. Caravan park noise curfews are around 10.00pm so hardly worth setting up in the parkfor an hour or two what happens if it rains. I would be happy with a campfire and a few beers with good friends. 8-)EXTRA at least that way ya get to meet everybody that has been out doing thier own thing all day. Leave Monday mid morning and plod on home by Thursday.. or friday.... Hey look at that, pull up, pull up.....or possibly saturday.... Geeez where only a hundred K.s from Bla Blah... lets go look... or sunday . Reddontgivearats .. just happy to be part of whatever we decide.

Hi All. Just found this thread. So, you think we are going to let a bunch of feral old caravan owners just come into our town whenever they want Damn right!! ;D The Mount is a great place. There are a number of caravan parks that would suit the purpose very well. Let me know if I can help out at all. There is a couple of members here now so we should be able to help out in the planning stages when and where needed, just ask. The FE/C nats clash is not an issue, in fact it will be a bonus. Lots of early Aussie road going history around. Sounds great, bring it on! Cheers, Dave.

I must admit that I aws really looking forward to doing both the vintage vanners and the fe-fc nats, making the trip from WA made it worthwhile to do vanners first followed by the nats over the Easter weekend. Having being to 2 of the fe -fc nats and knowing how full on they are,and also We have already booked our hotel accomadation. I would love to part of the vanners get together with our teardrop, but if it changes to the Easter weekend then I guess we will only be able to pop in when things are not happening at the Nats.....regards Gemma

Easter '08 is going to be busy 'round here. The pannel van nats are to be held nearby as well! Too much cool stuff on the road is still not enough! The Mount is plenty big enough to accommodate everyone. See Ya Here! Dave.

Redo, the van nats are being organised by a good friend of mine, they look like being based at the Pt McDonald football oval at this stage(PtMac is on the coast 25KM south of the Mount). All camping aswell as most meals and events are going to be 'in house' at the footy ground. Planning is in the early stages but that is what is happening at the moment. If you are interested PM me and I will pass on the organisers phone no. to you, that way you can get the right info, not just the second hand stuff. Cheers. Dave.

Gday everybody Spoke to a lady named Sue at the Blue Lake Caravan Park in Mt Gambier today. I am trying to organize (?) myself for 2008. my Easter weekend is booked for the FE,FC Nats ( we got the SPA ROOM) so I was checking for Caravan Park accomodation for the week leading into easter in case i ever get the Convair back together. and I planned on getting ther a few days early to allow time for all the breakdowns on the way ( at least i know the timing gear wont break at widgemooltha.....the mechanic promised the new one will last forever !!) She said the week leading into easter poses no problems ...BUT.. Easter weekend is really busy and would need to be booked well in advance. And if theres 20 vintage vanners wanting the Easter Weekend they would need 12 months notice just something to think about before it gets to late and the oppurtunity passes by Personally I dont mind when we do the caravan thing cos I'll be there either way but doing it during the week makes it easier for Cathy and I to catch up with everybody

G'Day surferboy I agree with you it would be easier to stage Vintage Vans Nationals during the week before Easter for us, as we are long time members of FEFC club Queensland. We are considering towing one of our vans with our modifyed FC ute, taking two weeks to do round trip. From past experience there is not a real lot of free time given eg; car run, show and shine and dinner night. Would be a shame to drive two thousand kms each way and not be able to meet up and spend time with Vintage Van enthusiast from other states. Regards David. Dosse
