Morning All. Been giving a bit of thought ( is that possible with a head like mine) about when and where might be a good place to bung on another NSW vintage van get together. At present we only have 2 permanent dates . One is Canton Beach in May.. Other is Coledale in October. There is room for at least one run before march to somewhere. next year we have the Berry Caravan Rally in March .. so for at least that year we have something to look forward to fairly early in the year. So i thought about mid winter.... Gone are the visions of swaying palms and scantley clad beach babes.. idyllic setting on sun bathed beaches... No siree Bob... I want ya to think about winter woolies, 3 pairs of sox on, roaring campfires and a heart warming brew in hand.... Now i know there will be plenty of "Dooner huggers" out there that wont be keen on trekking up into the Blue mountains in July but i am gunna propose a weekend getogether sometime during that month at Katoomba or Blackheath. I know it can snow and i know the temps regularly drop below zero up there... but hey.. we can always light a camp fire ( if we are allowed to do so) or adjourn into a camp kitchen for a bit of merryment. Just need to pack extra blankets, heater etc ( did i say electric blankets and fan heaters , pretend ya didnt hear that ) pretend you heard, Kero heaters, hot water bottles and a snuggly missus/husband. I done a bit of googling and found only 2 parks. both council run . One at Katoomba .. One at Blackheath ( Sorry lithgow is not an option the trains run through Kingys annexe). SOooooooo.. there yas go anyone interested in a "brass monkeys" weekend in the snow next year..... Bring Vodka, rum, green ginger wine.. hot water bottles.Thermo undies. very Now dont all rush me.. .... i know how appealing the thoughts of freezing to death in waste deep snow, during the depths of winter in vintage shoebox in the alps must be to you . I am open to derogative comments, abuse, being spat , possible citations for phyciatric assessment for suggesting such a stupid idea. I am also happy to go up there and camp even if i dont get any other looneys that think the idea has meritt. Attractions. ??.. Yup.. plenty. Echo point, The Three sisters, Skyway, Scenic Railway, Jenolan Caves, Hartley Gaol, zig zag Railway. Christmas in July..? Oh what fun it is to tow a vintage caravan through the snow....Ho, Ho, Ho... wake up to yourself you god damn idjit. Reddnoseriegndeer

'arold !! This scatter brained suggestion of yours only confirms a suspicion I have had for some time.. to travel to Katoomba in old caravans for a Christmas in July, in the blue mountains, where in July ice forms on the road, the mist hangs in the valley until midday, is a suggestion only a genius with a demented brain could make. The Blue Mountains is one of the jewels in Sydney's crown.... if people dress for the weather winter can be a great time to visit there . It can be invigorating to do some of the bush walks, ride the scenic railway or the Skyway and visit some of the many attractions in the area One minor problem is that neither of the caravan parks mentioned have camp kitchens, so it might be wise to splurge on a night out in one of the many food places that cater for “Christmas in July”. Book me in for this one oh demented genius ;D Cobber.

Hi Reddo, We are a maybe for you proposed Xmas in July run. We stayed at the council owned park at Blackheath a couple of months ago and note that the park is mainly on terraces cut into the hill, doesn't have a camp kitchen and the manager was grumpy. On the positive it is well placed to all the touristy stuff and it was cheap. Great idea, any excuse for Xmas pudding with custard.........can we have threepennies in the pudding please Dad??

Count me in ,great idea Reddo. As Ive learnt from this forum in the last few years is that you have just got to do it and be part of this great vv thing and not just sit in front of ya computer and dribble and bag shi............stuff. The 2 things Ive seen is ya just sit and dribble or ya tow and go so count me in on a tow and go.What time are we getting there . Cheers Dave

Hi All.. So... i am not the demented getaway starved twit i thought i was... This is good. After reading comments so far I feel that a campfire would be No:1 priority. Sight seeing during the day would have to come in second , and there is certainly some picturesque sites up there..... Umm it would be nice to have hot water in the showers... perhaps that should be No:1. It concerns me that the park manager is a grump and i would rather travel a little further afield and stay at a "happy Park" than be right in the thick of the touristy stuff and be miserable. After i posted the initial proposal i got thinking about national park / forestry camping grounds or maybe one of those propertys that cater for Four wheel drive campovers. I dont mean ya need a 4x4 to get into the property. Just thinking somewhere with basic toilet facilitys, a camp kitchen or an old shed to eat in?? Does anyone have any suggestions for places like that up the mountains. Even a weekend over around Canberra, or up around Bundanoon... Golbourn.. There is a top little camping ground at Wombeyan caves north of Golbourn on the way to Oberon. It has a beaut camp kitchen with a indoor fire place...... or maybe even Oberon Get back on track Reddo... Its only a 2 dayer. Can anyone give us the low down on Katoomba van Park. I suppose i could always ring em... but they will probably fib to me about how great it is. Its a pity the location is so spectacular but the van parks are about 2 star. Chippydave.. a good observation mate... sometimes ya just gotta "drop that mouse and get out of the house. Make a plan and hook up the van"" ;D ;D ;D Reddo

Hi again guys n gals
I have a friend who lives at Katoomba who would no doubt help if I ask................but I thought we had a couple of forum members up that way???
Reddo I think that the Blue mountains is a great location for this run but it is interesting that you should mention Wombeyan Caves. We have been going there for years and welcome any opportunity to go back. Open fires, moonlight nights with minimal street lighting, wildlife in the bush, good showers and toilet facilities for the ladies. the only problem for the Sydneysiders is that you need to tow caravans through Goulburn to get there as the road from Mittagong is not suitable. May i suggest it as a location for a long weekend run.

Hi Ken Re: Wombeyan Caves Park. There is Australia day in January. . Might be a bit hot and crowded there that weekend. Easter... Cooler . . but still probably packed. That leaves June long weekend... which is the first weekend in the month in 2009. This is also QLD wintersun week... i think . We can mull it over ay Katoomba next year and maybe look at heading to wombeyan(2010) the same weekend that Berry is on next year i.e: early march on a normal weekend. Easier travelling on a Friday arvo on a normal weekend than heading somewhere on friday arvo of a longweeked.. and less crowded when ya get there. Meanwhile .. i will ring Katoomba and see what doing there on the first weekend in July......3rd,4th,5th . 2009 NSW school hols start 10/7/2009 The kids go back to school on monday 27/7/2009 so that leaves us with only the first weekend in July to dodge the ankle biters. Here ya go.. www.caravanparkphotos.com.au/katoomba/index.htmPlease consider. I spoke on the tellingbone to Val the caretaker yesdy. She is happy to have us. No fires but will supply a large gas heater for the BBQ shed. I stressed .. all sites together. she said that wont be a problem if we do a bulk booking early. To avoid "Rug Rat infestation " ( school hols) looks like we are aiming for friday ( arvo) 3/7/2009 to sunday 5/7/2009. I have told Val we want 10 sites. cant see us getting anymore than that on a "normal" weekend. Reddo, Cobber, ChippyD Koala, Kaybee MrFJ55 vantoura Spyder (via pm ..added 27/1/2008). Kingy.. ( still a "definite maybe" as at 24/3/2009) Lithgow Dave (added 2/1/2009) John and Pam from Muswellbrook( added 14/1/2009) .. Lynmel ( added 1/2/2009) Humpty2 ( added 24/3/2009) Wildmanus ( added 24/3/2009) that makes 15 sites booked . Geoff and Jude J-Rod Anonomous member from Victoria (25/3/2009) Jeff Jennison ( added 10/4/2009) 18.sites Andrew ( Green EK wagon with pixie van) added 7/5/2009 Whippy To try and accomodate the extras i will ring Valerie at Katoomba today and see if we can get the sites bumped up to 20 ... How good is this for a place that get well below zero on the thermometer in winter... Bloody masicists.... the lot of us As a matter of courtesy please get sorted out soon.and let me know if you intend coming.?? to save cluttering up the runs and events page .. anyone interested in coming along could you please PM me and i will add your name to the list by modifying this post. Sounds good! As Katoomba is nearby I can help with bookings and suggestions etc for the weekend.
Yulefest is a busy time in the Mountains, so would suggest advanced bookings for meals. I would also recommend Katoomba Caravan Park rather than Blackheath as it is a nicer setting and more spread out. I would be happy to check it out if needed.
Cheers Dave

Hi "Yule - all" ;D Have a scroll through this link. Some options for Yulefest meal and entertainment on saturday night in Katoomba www.yulefest.com/take no notice of the prices quoted . That is including accomodation. i was going to ring around and see how much they would slug us for leg in the door for meal and entertainment only?? Lettuce know what ya reckon If we intend to pursue this idea we will need to get our act together ........ work out numbers and pre book. There is always the option of bunging on our own Yulefest celebrations in the enclosed camp kitchen/hall/room thingo.. Bring pudding and a mixture of tucker to gnaw on..... Im easy.. or is that greasy.. or maybe .. sleasy I suspect this will happen under the guise of "happy Hour " on friday night anyway. Reddo

Howdy Reddo, With a bit of luck, Lady Madonna will be back in Qld in July ;D ;D ;D ;D, but thought I might share a little secret with you (as passed to me by WA forum member Luvshack.........) which might be a nice touch for your Yuletide festivities if anyone wants to give it a go......... the campers fruitcake/pudding....... Ingredients..... 600ml choc milk 1kg fruit 2 cups self raising flour Soak fruit overnight (or for an hour or 2) in choc milk. Stir in flour Place in oven 180 degrees for approx. 1 hour (hour and a half in an electric frypan). It's that easy......no other ingredients required (sherry, diced pineapple if you wish).....works a treat . I doubled the amount and cooked one of these in a camp oven over Christmas as an experiment......bit burnt on the outside, but still impressed all those gathered at the fray ;D ;D ;D ;D Like I said, all credit must go to Dave & Pat (Luvshack) for this recipe Daggsey

Sounds "YUMMO"..... Daggsey. Thanks for that.. Jist one thing concerns me.. ... the whole thing sound a little "dry" dontja think.... Are we restricted with the alcohol content in this recipe.. is there some sorta copyrot on it .. or can "Hughie Redman" do a bit of fine tuning Like i mean ya have to consider the environment that this concok.. connco.. concocti..... .. this ingredient will be consumed in... Think.... Up to your "Jatz Crackers" in snow Think:.. Reindeers in leg warmers, beanies and army surplus flannos having "group Hugs" to survive Think: Having a "number 2 "and your "privates" getting snap frozen to the stainless steel toilet bowl. Think: Leaving your ice chest door open because its colder than having it shut. Think : 6 St Bernards with kegs under thier necks per person... Think: the fifth brother of the famous Ukranian Zarzoff family ;D 1..Kicky Zarzoff 2...Shotti Zarzoff 3. Bluey Zarzoff and..lets not forget...... 4,, The heroic Fireman... Burnie Zarzoff and last but not least... 5.. .."Freezi Zarzoff" ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Sherpa Tenzings offsider that lugged the eskys and stubby holders up the side of mount Everwhatsit back in .. umm.. oh you remember don't ya.... you know.. Sir Edmond Hillbilly and all that..... Ok... ya have the picture...now.. good .. lets move on.... I reckon the 'riginal recipe needs a little fine tuning .. A bitta "steam" besides the flame under it.... ;D Think:.. O.P Rum Think: a splash of J.D........ or Jailbar Juice Think: everything that was in Chippydaves "Birthday pack esky" We dont wanna perish in the Alps old mate.. ya gotta adapt to the conditions.. Yup.. i bags overseeing the "Cake mix" ;D ;D ;D Oh bye the way... Just got off the phone... John and Pam with "The Auto One sponsored silver , blue and red dotted Dominos pizza box Bondy" are in the katoomba"Schnapps and stroodle Tin" .. that makes ten of us. .. If i am gunna perish in the high attitude.. (Oh geez theres one of thsoe hard words again) i aint goin down on me own Sorry folks.. Full House Vintage caravan weekend..at Katoomba Falls caravan Park Singin................ "Oh.. jingle bells Batmans smells.. Rudolphs got bad breath... Oh what fun it is to eat "Luvshacks" recipe to ya death ;D "Redknowsagoodtimewhenheseesit"

Will there be other sites available for this weekend or is it limited to ten sites. We are only new to this forum and our first trip will be Berry. If we fit in we would be interested in joining this trip also. We have a few friends in the process of completing restoration of their vans and also have friends in lower mountains with a great vintage van who might be interested.

;D Hi Lynmel I went to Bathurst swapmeet this weekend and detoured into Katoomba Falls Van Park to have a yarn with the caretakers. We have bumped the sites reserved for the vintage vanners form 10 to 15. As you can imagine they have to leave some sites for the travellers. If they didnt, and let us have the entire park for the weekend .... well then there would be some disgruntled tourists / travellers who would spread the word far and wide that the bloody vintage caravan mob had taken over the park . Not good for our movement or the reputation of the van park. Its not a big park and has survived for a bloody long time on passing trade. Its council owned with no permanents .. so .. yeah reputation as accomodating is important. Its the only van park in Katoomba and the tourists would have to travel to Blackheath to get a spot in the van park. So ... yep you are more than welcome to tag along. i will add your name to the list somewhere back in the replys here. Tell your friends to get their finger out and get their restos finished. You can let me know thier names somewhere down the track. I promised Val i would supply FIRM and FINAL Numbers by early May. His a few shots of the park. Ammenties building... nice and central to every site. Camp kitchen .. use to be the old ammenties block. 2 staino electric BBQs. the door in the back corner leads into a cosey room with a telly etc in it. Val has offered us a large gas bottle with one of the Patio warmer gas heaters. Should be nice and crowded with say 15 vans X 2 people ... say 30 of us in there All the sites in the foreground ar concrete slabs with concrete annex pads. So difficult to bask pegs in unless ya have an impact drill. our sites are over where the motor homes are and down around the front of the camp kitchen. Grass and concrete pads. We could always party in the laundry?? Here is the courtesy bus to run you back up to your van. ;D and what would a visit to Katoomba be with out a trip to visit the golden girls.. The three sisters. Hi Maurie,
Sorry for delay, have limited access to the internet from home, good to hear from you. Busy preparing for long journey to Perth for Perth Austin A40 car rally with Propert in tow. Back first week in May. Will look at club and club prices for meal options in the next few weeks. Fond memories of my first Coledale experience meeting new friends and yourself.
Dave.
