Dear Mr and Mrs Cac, Now that the Super Sun Liner is on i`ts maiden voyage it would be nice if you were to put up photos as it travels along the eastern seaboard and beyond. Something for us working mice as we run around the mouse wheel to aspire too.

A clue, what was the weight when it was registered? I am guessing about 850kg The rule of thumb for payload for a single axle caravan is 300kg, and from what I have read that normally balloons out to 400kg plus. Have to agree with Koala's figure of 1250 kg.

Wasn't weighed for rego.Self assessed ar 730 kg..........but probably closer to 900kg in reality.

Usually in Queensland the allowed extra weight for water clothes etc is 300kg and this added to the tare weight is what it should be registered at. There is no change in rego price until you go over 1.02t and you get to run a small number plate. Self assesmant is usually for box trailers ONLY with no brakes and a gross weight of 750kg. The BIG problem is if something goes wrong and the van is weighed then all sorts of overloading problems arise which could mean loss of insurance and maybe a court appearence. A rodworthy check is also required on trailers over 750kg for rego or sale. For the price that does not change it is better to be legal than to try to save a very small amount of money and to do things legal. A lot better in the long run because near enough is not good enough with the technology that enforcement people have these days. The weights also have to be stamped on the drawbar if no compliance plate fitted which with old vans is usually the case.I myself like to drive down the road knowing that I am legal and if something does go wrong I have covered my own bum and the bum of others if any and not flying by the seat of my pants. Self assesment might fool the counter staff at rego points but it will not fool the people that are on road enforcement. Sorry Sutcat old habits die hard lol

Another thing about self assesment is as the owner has to sign on the dotted line. It is to be noted that the form is an official bit of paperwork that says all is true and correct. Aything not correct like weights is false and misleading and is classed as giving the rego people false and misleading information which carries very heavy penalties but the main worry is that the caravan becomes UNREGISTERED as it is not what is on the application for registration paperwork.. Something to consider very carefully as to what one does.

Hey sutcac, I reckon your rig will come in well over the tonne, if you put it on a weighbridge, in which case, like the others already said, it's dicey!!

Let me see, 680KG bare van,200kg of mod cons, 100kg of clothes , 100 kg of Mrs Sutcacs antiques/dinner sets ect and 125kg for Mr Sutcacs wallet. lets see ,that`s 1205 kg. Sugest moving the wallet up the front for better towing.

Hhmmmmm......van came in at 1420kg.!!!!!! Had to redistribute some weight to get towball weight up from 120kg to 140kg. Tows beautifully at that.

Struth, that is heavy. I would be concerned about what wheel bearings and rims you are running. Early holden rims will likely crack like mine did. Pleased you took JD's advice and moved your wallett:))

Bloody hell Sutcat that bad mate, would say that the van is not what was stated on the initial registration so the van is definitely unregistered. Hope all is good for you whilst traveling.

Hey koala, sutcac didn't move his wallet, the weighbridge was free!!! The final weight doesn't surprise me one bit, when you consider what you did to that van sutcac. How many litres of paint is on the van? Even at the same weight as water (and paint would be heavier) there's probably an extra 100 kg added by paint and fibreglass filler alone. You've increased you water weight by double! It soon adds up - a good lesson for us all!!!

Mr Koala, I think I owe Mr Sutcac an apology , Wallet a lot heavier than I thought. Also Mrs Sutcac has been on the road for a while now, thats a lot of antique and second hand stores passed (not)her contribution to this conundrum should be not underestermated.
