As I mentioned previously, I vowed that I'd never prep and paint another Sunliner after doing a couple. I must be a slow learner to have taken on another one!! The process is to fill the surface of the shell with a product called Q Cells, microscopic plastic spheres so tiny that the product appears even finer than talcum powder. This is mixed together with polyester resin to form a 'bog' to fill the discrepancies in the exterior surface of the van's shell. This is sanded back and the process repeated until the desired smooth surface is obtained. The finished Q Cell bogged surface is quite porous and 'pin holy' so a light 'skim coat' of automotive bog is applied. The next step is to spray the whole surface with 2K Hifill primer/filler, then sand that back to 400 grit ready for the final 2pac colour coats. Fun Fun Fun!!! Combo of Q Cells(white) and automotive filler( ochre) Spray on some light guide coat........ ....and sand most of it back off again!!!!!....................

Wot, the neighbours still haven't tossed you out for all that dust you're creating? Keep at it while you can. I expect to see the finished work next April!

I think he gets away with the mess because the neighbours love looking over the fence at the Aerolite .

After months of prep , finally got to apply about 40 litres of 3M Platinum bog over the Q cells to get the final prep ready for 2K colour!!!!!! Dunno what I'm smiling about.......should be crying.....no fingerprints or fingernails left on my hands!!!!! Hooked her up and towed the 300km to Esk(Qld) to John and Di Adams new shed where John waved his magic with the Protec 2K. (thanks John!!!) Master craftsman at work masking up the breakup lines..... Towed back home and have started the final fiddly fit out....using Armstrong Nylex tiles over the ply floor. .....on the home straight now....YEE HAR!!!!!

Mate, I have been in and out of this forum for some time... what you have done is unbelievable! It makes all those years of teaching worth it! Well... no it doesn't. Who am I kidding. A lotto win of 32 million may cover that. But you will be rewarded by all those kids buying you a beer... well they don't! But your local politician will praise your Naplan results (with a 20% reduction of funding and resources every 3 years)... well they don't either! But you have the self-satisfaction that you have done a good job. So now work harder...! And for Christ-sake...sweep up that dust! Mate it is looking sensational! HALPS

Dunno what I'm smiling about.......should be crying.....no fingerprints or fingernails left on my hands!!!!! G'day Sutcac, Its got me beat too that'd be too much for me, an incredible amount of work, but sure looks good at the end. Great to have an expert painter.. I was moaning about 2 coats of epoxy resin on the Don 133 & the sanding !! good on ya. Surf Tragic.

Clyde.....Looking good. Now for a transfer of information. Do you apply the Q cell mix direct to raw fibreglass, then start the levelling process? I will assume that the van will need to be under cover while working with the fillers and undercoat as it would be quite porous eh? I will try to get around to posting some photos sometime....you wouldn't believe how rough some fibreglass bodies can be...and no it is not a Sunliner!

Hi Pete. The Q Cell mix can be applied directly to the fibreglass and/or Gelcoat. Just make sure that you prepare the base material by sanding with 40 or 60 grit to give the Q Cells a good rough surface to 'key' to. Yes, the Q Cells is porous so should be undercover. Moisture shouldn't worry automotive filler too much. Cheers, Sutcac.

And while we're transferring info, do you seal the underside of the floor (the side exposed to the road)? If so, what with?

Yes. You certainly need to seal the underside . Try the Norglass range of products. There will be something suitable for the task, I'm sure. www.norglass.com.au/products/

Excellent! Thanks for the link, can I possibly press you on which product you used? Very cool vans, by the way. The "improved vintage" philosophy is the same one I'm using for our van

I have not used Norseal, but it comes recommended by those who have.
I have used Taubmans 3 in 1 sealer /primer/ undercoat with Taubmans exterior acrylic over that. Hasn't been on long enough to say how its going to perform.
There is also a range of bituminous sealers designed expressly for the underside of vehicles. Google is your friend as well as mine.

Starting to get real close now! Can almost taste it!!! Got the Armstrong Nylex tiles sealed with 3 coats of their " Shinekeeper" product. Pelmets and magnetic fly screens made and installed. 24" 12 volt TV installed.Gas struts mounted to hatch. Venetians for rear fixed windows. Can't find anything we like in curtain material yet, so are recycling some old van curtains kindly donated to the cause by our friend Mary.(Thanks, Mary) Stone guard protector frame fabricated out of 25mm round ally and light alloy sheet. Spring hangers relocated on chassis from original position. Mrs Sutcac's starting to load her up with nic nacs!!!!!..... so we'll be off for a test run soon. Probably tow up to Agnes Waters for a few days,,,,,about 600km round trip....for a decent shakedown first trip.

......magnetic fly screens made and installed....... OMG I'm such a buffoon All this time I've been mulling over how I'm going to build a screen door on a steel framed van. Magnetic screens are a fantastic idea! The clock and Tiki Dancer are nice touches.
