Hi JBJ You are lucky to have a daughter so gifted . Look upon the hi fill as another hurdle cleared. Keep running at the pace you are going. I reckon ya can do better than turn up at Wintersun under primer. I will almost lay money on the sunliner being finished in time. Keep peddling mate you are doing great. Would like to praise you more than i have but if the Royal Bondwood Society mob find me loittering on this fibreglass post i will be banished for ever Go you good thing ;D Gotta run Reddo Reddo

Hi Sutcac,
Got the spats in the mail today, Wednesday. Pretty good service for Aussie Post. Thanks again for your help.
Like I thought, they are both the same, & neither side fit the wheel position properly. On my van (independent suspension model) the wheel centre is forward in the wheel wheel, where the factory spats have the openings centred in the wheel well. The difference is around 50mm on mine
I'm thinking of taking the ends down to line up with the bottom of the van, not 50 odd mm up as factory. I intend making a left & right, & shape the opening to match the wheel shape in position, as well as bring it out from the van body enough to clear the Torana 5"x13" mags I'm going to use.
Hopefully it'll work out like I envisage. Then they will be available from me in stock form & modified.

Hi All We’ve finally got started with the interior refit. I’ve ripped out cupboards, interior linings & everything but the bed frame I made. Then I hired a carpenter to work part time on it, the same guy that did the cupboards & floor in Groovin. The theory was that combining glass & ply would be difficult to finish, if it wasn’t done at the walls, so the joins could be covered/filled/hidden. We’re putting in extra overhead cupboards, new bench unit holding frig & drawers, etc, & new clothes cupboard & drawers, along with new seating in club lounge style at front. Day 1 got the strange bolted in flooring system someone fitted ( using hex head bolts sticking up above a 6mm ply floor, using small joined together bits) replaced with 17mm ply glued & screwed over . There isn’t any movement in the floor now. Previously I moved the floor down nearly 15mm when I stood on it. I know I’m not a lightweight, but it was terrible. Tomorrow we start on cupboards & /or seating. Its 5 days a week, 3 hours a day for a while now. We will make progress. Jailbarjuice

Hi JBJ. I have said it before about you and boots and will say it again. You certainly dont do things by halves. Keep up the good work and update pictures as often as you can. I just cant see you hiring a van to go to Wintersun. Nor can i see ya sitting in a flat up the road somewhere knowing we are down in the park somewhere partying. Its more likely you will turn up with the Sunliner even if it only has a card table and two milk crates as a fitout inside by that stage. furthermore: I .........as the President of "The Royal Society for the Preservation of Bondwood Caravans" would also like to take this opportunity to alert all our members to the amount of TIMBER that is used in these old Sunliners. It appears the timber gives them STRENGTH. Something that RSPBC members have suspected all along. Just havent been able to find a donour fibreglass van so we could perform an autopsy on with sledge hammers and chainsaws to see why they stayed together while being towed. I propose the theory that without the timber these vans would be like a balloon half full of water Dennis can you forward the name of the CARPENTER working on your van. "The royal society of wood butchers" has been informed of this blokes activitys which contravene clause 5.55 of the wood manglers charter . " No workin' on anythin' that is not constructed of something that has raw materials other than those that have been planted, grown and harvested, Milled and sawn to length. kiln dried, nailed or screwed together" We will be taking legal action against him and he will be getting struck off our register. Seeing as though you are a very close friend ( well at least until i posted this reply) i will be recommending that the society not take any legal action against you for "Employing, harbouring ,aiding and abetting a criminal". I appreciate you will probably be passing this correspondence on to your solictors " Humpty Spyder and associates" for perusal. Yours at arms length Reddo.. Pres of RSPBC

Hi Reddo,
We are using a Sunliner kindly supplied & loaned by Sutcac at Wintersun. He's towing it down for us to use, while he stays in a PENTHOUSE overlooking the ocean.
Its a great deal hes doing for us. I'm trying to find a 44 of Bundy to repay him & Barb for their effort.
You are wrong about the wood content of the Sunliners. I can personally vouch for the fact that other than the floor, very little wood is in the original van. They used a little bit of light ply in the cupboard & shelves, drawers , etc, but that was it. They are extremely light, & great to work on. Give me one over ply or tincans any day. My toxicity meter reads ZERO anywhere in my van.

Didja hear that Cobber and Kingy.. JBJ wrote: "Give me one over ply or tincans any day" Can someone contact the "Royal Soc... blah blah " secretary and ensure that this bloke has his name and Purdon removed from the list of life members. "Sutcac is loaning his sunliner".....There is an old saying... "Birds of Asbestos. . stick together" ahh well it went something like that. Just dont come grovelling to me and "the royal society .. blah, blah...". when ya wake up in the Sunliner at Kirra and ya find a Pelican trying to "Make love" to the van. Reddo

Hi All, Progress report & pix on Sunliner interior rebuild. Bob the builder has been busy making front seat base & Kitchen cupboard, as well as fitting new floor. The kitchen cupboard will carry enough space for most things, with fridge space, 4 drawers, a cupboard, & a hinge out drawer at the lower RHS. The annex fits into the central space under the seating, with a storage space under each side. We’re making progress. Nearly finished all the external filling & rubbing, so hopefully before Wintersun it’ll be in final primer, ready for some windows & paint. Jailbarjuice

gidday Jailbar thanks for the great photos of your van it clearly shows the reinforcing and just a part of the work and the amount of work that is required for a rebuild if there are members out there that want to see how much work you have put into that sunliner take the time to call into paradise (Alstonville)and take a close look at how much you have put in to get this sunliner into the shape you have Tuckys van has had 3 bidders so far and getting closer to his bottom dollar reserve one of the Rodders over here is winning at the moment and good on who ever gets it remember folks there will only be one other van as good if not better than Tuckys when it is finished and that is Jailbars and I guarantee you that will never be sold after the massive amount of work that has gone into it (I have seen the progress on 3 occassions and if you ask me if Jailbar is a perfectionist the answer is yes) and I also saw the massive amount of work and material that Tucky did on his van over a 6 month period on a daily basis if you new members want a brand new van from stem to stern ring me and I will inform you of the progress and the bids that have come in on this beautiful sunliner we can get the Van east for $800.00 but will not reveal who made the bids the price is some what lower than we started with but I still think that the van is worth every cent of nine thousand dollars however tucky wants to sell the van and is on the market if we dont get his reserve we will put it on ebay Will and Kens plastic fantastic spectacular immaculate vintage van online sales Centre "just a thankyou and a smile will do"is our motto absolutely no commissions meet "Happy Harry"folks Our Gun Sales person one of our new sales staff presently in stock one only rare combination built by Colin and Kris Bates the coupe is in Passion Pink and the van is in a smart polished imitation chrome finish any inspection welcome make an offer NOW!!!!! Hi Will & Lyn,
Final colours will still probably be Coarse Metalflake same as my rod, seeing its gonna have to stay as towcar ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D, & if I get the doors & roof sorted out on the rod so I got windows ( at last) Boots will probably be a bit happier in it. I'm also gonna move the exhaust outlets from alongside our ears to the back of the truck, probably with more mufflers. Shit its sad getting old & I'm nearly deaf already. Loud exhausts, Blowers, grinding without ear protection, it all adds up .
The 59 Hillman taillights on the Sunlinerlook right, & the body needs another couple of days work filling & sanding. I wore out one air operated speed file sander already, and just started with a new one. Its nearly ready for final hifill primer. Its great to be able to see the end of the filling & sanding getting closer.
I,ve just fitted my torana jelly bean mags & new tyres, & they look good.
I get the spats back tomorrow from the fibreglasser, then start modifying them to fit the mags & look like I want them to.
I've now got a mould for early sunliner spats if anyone needs them.
Its all fun, but there aint enough hours in a day, what with having to work to pay for hobbies.
Jailbarjuice.

Hi JBJ I make a strong recommendation you check out the new gas regulations that came into force last week. Apparently caravan dealers are tearing their hair out about it. The fridge alcove now needs to be fully sealed and vented - not even a drawer space is allowed, is just one of the new regs. Another relates to distances for exhaust fans from cooktops. So check it out with your local gas certifier before you box yourself into an unfixable situation. Cheers Ray

Hi All More progress pix on my Sunliner interior rebuild. I made a steel tube stiffener to support the roof, as the hatch had dropped as part of the roof damage I found. It screws into the wooden blocks I've glassed in for the awning sailtrack, as well being a major support for overhead cupboards & clothing / pantry cupboard. It certtainly is stiff & rigid now. We’ve so far got the new floor laid, the bigger (1500 wide) bed base made, sides around the bed fitted, main kitchen cupboard finished, with drawers made & fitted,( only doors to come), front seat base made, & the clothes cupboard/pantry framed & partly fitted out. The pantry is complete except for outer ply sheeting. Still to come, overhead cupboard on the ends & entry side, & ceiling lining in ply ( like most of the pommie vans), as well as doors to all cupboards. Then it’s a coat of undercoat on everything inside so I can start putting windows in. Jailbarjuice

Bloody amazing. JBJ These old van refits are a lot more work than tackling a renovation in a kitchen or a bathroom of a house. Certainly looks the goods mate.. talk about solid . Thats fairly hefty lookin WOOD that ya usin' there. I reckon the weighbridge mob a gunna rub thier hands together when they see ya comin up the road Love the layout and she certainly looks functional. 1500 mm wide bed.... size does matter Sue wants to know if ya gunna fit a maxwell smart " cone of silence" to help cut down the snoring decibels??? I guess a wintersun debut is now definitley out of the question . Seem to remember you saying that sutcac is loaning you a van for the week?? Be good to catch up with you and boots again. I sent you a PM . looks like you will have the Kingys and me on your lawn next wednesday arvo. Still dunno what i am towing , and what i am towing it with but will definitley be there . Me 'n' Ken kennedy will bring our nail bags and help ya stand the roof trusses on the sunliner ;D We aint too bad at guttering and downpipes either.. by the time we're finished ya wont recognise the old van Reddo.... have 14lb hammer will travel.

Certainly taking shape now JBJ, cabinetry will sure be a feature ( might bring me pen and notebook on Wednesday and pinch some ideas for the 2nd bondy ;D ;D ) The rest of the resto should all fall into place soon, now that most of all the major works done, then it'll be time to ENJOY. Kingy

Hi All,
With the front seat, as most of the time it'll only be Boots & I in the van, we decided to make it like a club lounge, with a removeable round table.
But we are making a removeable panel & cushions to convert it to a small double bed, for when our family travel with us.
The cushions will just lay at the back of our main bed when travelling, with the timber base fitting into the big drawer under the main bed.
This van is being built to suit us, so probably isnt anyone else's dream van.
We are setting it up for staying in caravan parks only, as we have no great interest in roughing it in the bush. I've done heaps of that when I was younger.

Aussietanker..A Sunliner normally weighs 700kg, minus fridge & cushions. All the extra timber & fibreglass that JBJ is putting into it will probably bring it up an extra 100kg.........then you start to put fridges, stoves, microwaves, mattresses, cushions, bedding, towels, food ,water, something to eat off & with, you are gunna be up around a tonne.
Great to watch the progress Dennis..I'm lovin' it!!
