hi steve you used the direct link (or some other reference code) instead of the img code. by the way, using that direct link allows the interweb public access to ALL your photos - may not be a very good idea to leave it up there. conti

Thanks Cobber and Steve for uploading pics of your hatch fitting. And YES cobber, I did notice that you uploaded it with your Ipad ;D ;D ;D Gotta thank you cobber for that great idea of a pull handle. Like all great ideas, they're meant to be copied before they get patented, so I've got in early After relocating the front bolt, here is the hatch in the closed position In open position: Sure saves getting your fingers caught Thanks cobber Ray

G'day Ray, If I wasn't so busy in the shed, I'd come on this forum and tell you what a might fine job you're doing on the Rowvan. I'd also tell you how good an idea it is to put shelving in the cupboard, so that you can cram more useful stuff into the van. And lastly, I'd tell you to do something about dressing the slots in the screws on that bracket you fitted. From what I hear, an exploding iPad is not a pretty sight, so you'd better fix 'em up before You-know-who gets to see 'em. ;D ;D Unfortunately, I can't tell you any of the above because I'm just too darn busy...in the shed. cheers, Al.

Glad you're not telling me all these thing Al, especially the bit about the screws. If you look closely, the screws holding the bracket to the timber framing ARE slotheads . Had to hunt high and low, especially because of you know who eagle eyes ;D ;D ;D Must admit that the self-tappers holding the handle to the bracket do suffer from an identity crisis, the slot head part predominates and I actually screwed then on using a slot-head screwdriver. But they also have a little furrow at right angles to the slot, not quite as big/long. I think the manufacturers did this in sympathy with Mr Phillips, after reading that his screws were invented waaayyyyy before caravans were built in Oz, and wanted the public to know that you (watch what you say here, Ray, you've had a glass of wine) ..... can attach those screw whatever way you want ;D ;D ;D ;D So glad to hear you're VERY busy in that shed of yours Ray

Well, a lot has happened since the last post, both in the shed of misadventure and my life. Back in Feb, I decided that I'd had enough of this house reno business and that there was more to life than that. So decided to put the house on the market "as is" and see what happened. A couple of weeks ago I got a contract on it. Instead of the usual 60-90 days that happen down here, I scored a 30 day contract. That way I would be out of town when the winter came. Which meant I had 30 days to finish the van, clean out the house and have it empty by the 20th May!!! Panic Who, me Nah Make a plan!!!! 1st week paint inside the van. Check!!! Yep, in sympathy to our environment, I've gone green!!!!! Couldn't help myself and had to add a little dot of red on the door handles, thanks to seeshell!! 2nd week - paint the outside!!! Check!!! (well sort of, after all its only Thursday) Here she is in her underwear!! (That was Tuesday) Here she is in her outer livery colours, without the baubles and bangles OK all you purists, stop screaming I know she has lost her "Rowvan" stripe!!! But quite frankly dears, I don't give a damn ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D As usual , I dare to be different, and when Mr Rowe sees the finished result, he'll wish he had me working in his factory, consulting him on colour schemes etal. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I wanted to do away with the aluminum crescent cover strips at the wall joints, so I fibreglassed them instead. and at this point have also decided NOT to have the corner cover strips, as they too have been sealed using glass tape. By the way, it is rather an auspicious day for my Rowvan today. Had a neighbour pop over for a look-see, and during our chat, I happened to check the exact date of the builder's signature under the sink. Yep, 2nd May 1957 - so today, she has a new birthday suit ;D ;D ;D How appropriate. Oh, and cobber - thanks for the gee-ups Ray

Hey Ray Looking super and very glad you could put the handles to good use. They look smashing. Good luck too on the house, and the freedom that will come with getting out on the road. I have a feeling you won't look back at all with any regret. Cheers and best of luck mate! Carley (Seehell)

Gosh, Ray!...you certainly like "living on the edge"...30 days!! I quite like the colour scheme on the inside. Green is good. I hope you didn't include that second-hand shed in the property sale. Pack it back up and take it with you! Man, you're gonna be knackered by the time this is all over. Best wishes for the next 30 days... ;D cheers, Al.

It's ten days to settlement HD - countdown time, I guess. Spent this week emptying out the house, all that's left is OP shop stuff, caravan stuff and my bed, fridge and washing machine, PLUS what's in the shed of misadventure! Gave myself a packing layday today and installed the rear lights and new jockey wheel. My clearance lights I had didn't work out as I expected, so had to buy new ones as a temporary measure until I find what I want. Vicroads insist on inspecting the van, so I have to make sure it complies.
Tomorrow I'll instal the inhouse 12 volt lights as well as the exterior light. Since the pics were taken, I've also installed the beading on two sides, where the two paint colours come together. Still have the rear fixed window to instal (not looking forward to that) and re-instal the front one, as there is a bit of a gap at the frame. I few bits of paint touch-up here and there and that's all I can do for now. The rest will just have to wait. I know that bearings are OK and she has new tyres as well.
My ex kindly sewed my curtains for me, so they are ready to instal too.
Might be burning the night oils a bit next week, but I should just scrape in.
Ray

A question for all you mechanically minded people. The Rowvan hitch has a little side gate into which the towball slips Today I cleaned out the gunk from the hitch and found that to the left of the section where the ball fits (when looking at the photo), there is a tapered hole, going back towards the van, about 6 inches long. It was full rubbish! Does anyone know whether that hole is meant to be filled with grease, to act as a lubricant for the ball assembly? Opinions would be appreciated. To my non-mechanical mind that would be the only reason for the hole being there. It has no outlet as such. Ray

G'day Ray, It is a "globe" coupling.... right ? There is one here @ reply #44 in the tow coupling thread but there is no mention of this hole you found, like........ who goes poking around Inside greasy old tow couplings Personally, I can't see much point in it, if you fill it with grease that's where the grease would stay (as you found), if you fill it with oil it won't stay there long, it'll just leak out and make a mess... that's what I reckon Might have something to do with the manufacturing process See what others think Cobber.

Ray my new Globie has one of these mysterious hitches. one look at it had hubby scratching around in the dusty filing cabinets of his brainpan for the 'useless' bits stowed when he finished his Mech Eng degree - a million years ago

Yay, got my number plate, not without its little drama, but I managed to bite my tongue! Clyde, maiden trip will be to the Central Coast NSW late next week, then to Hervey Bay in June. After all, that's what southerners do - head north for the winter!! Isambard, will be interesting to hear what hubby comes up with regarding that hitch - to grease or not to grease that gullet??? Ray

Congrats on the plates, Ray!! As regards the hitch, will let you know. His practical engineering skills are as rusty as the hitch, but it'll twig eventually! Meantime, enjoy the road north in your lovely van with her shiny new plates
