Having a think about that 6" hole in your drawbar connection - could it ever have had a tapered pin or spring (now gone) that helped the ball rattle less or provide tension to the (presumably greased) ball?

Hey cobber. Hoops When I rang to make registration appointment (you can't just wander in and register a vehicle here), I was told the van had to be inspected, even though it was under 750kg and therefore self-assessable. Why? because it was a caravan and not camper trailer or other light trailer under 750kg! I filled out the downloadable light trailer application form from their site and she wouldn't accept it! Had to be a Vehicle registration form, even though she admitted that it really was a light trailer and self-assessable! Vehicle registration form was the same form (apart from the heading), and an additional question - number of passengers! Then wouldn't accept my receipt from the previous owners, because it did not show their address. So, off to the police station to make a stat dec that I owned the vehicle. Ended up examining the van (I suppose so that she wouldn't have to refund the prepaid examination fee) and I think she thought she had me when the indicator didn't work! Only because I hadn't switched the ignition key on!! Bureaucracy gone mad Ray

Seeshell, you could well be right with your comments! As good an explanation as any I guess. Unless it is something simply like it was easier to make the cast that way. But I really WOULD like to know why it is there. It is a conical shape and certainly doesn't have any opening at the bottom of the cone. Maybe it's simply there to catch rubbish samples ;D ;D ;D

Struth, Ray...between your photos from less than two weeks ago, and your photos now, you've certainly had the bit between your teeth on this job! Beautiful, beautiful result, and you deserve all the congratulations you'll get. One question about that coupling...is the tapered hole exposed on the underside to any degree, or is the whole taper completely enclosed? I'm thinking that if it was exposed, it might be part of the foundry process to minimise the usage of metal, and to minimise the amount of subsequent grinding necessary to make the underside flat for fixing to the drawbar. Thanks Al! Regarding the coupling, there is no hole whatsoever at the bottom. Wish Mr Rowe was readin this thread, he'd know!

hi Ray. had a chat with the husbot about The Hole in The Hitch. after a bit of applied guesswork, he announced 'cost and weight saver'. ie, doesnt need to be solid so why waste materials. bit like cheap gold jewellery, hollowed out on the blind side. could be wrong of course, and it does indeed perform some mysterious but vital function - though his years in fabrication and manufacturing means he spots 'budget measures' from a mile away

Ray, Exciting development regarding the hole in your coupling Like I said...... "Who goes poking around in greasy old tow couplings" So I did, and guess what ? ..................................... both the Wesco coupling on Driftwood and the John Walsh/Locktite/Newcastle coupling on the Newcastle van have a hole in a similar spot inside the coupling So..... could everybody please go out and inspect your couplings to see if you have a hole in a similar spot...... then we'll work out why it's there .........aye? Hi, If this thread is still alive, I would greatly appreciate knowing how the clear part of the windows , either glass or plastic, were fitted by you into the wooden window frames you made ..............to make them waterproof and sightly. The photos look most impressive but do not give this detail I have just bought a 50's wooden van. I think it is a Globe Trotter but hope to clear that up on Monday when I go to have an up-close look as opposed to studying photos. Your photos and text helped me to take the plunge Yours

Hi kingsnew I don't own the van any more, that pleasure belongs to another couple of members. The front and side windows sit in the frames. I applied a beading of silicone to the inside of the frame first, then laid the glass/perspex into it. I then re-used the original timber beading, nailed to the frame, to hold it all in place. The rear window is fixed and installed with that H shaped rubber moulding. Hope this helps. If not, PM me
