Hi all, with our new electric braked axle it has provision for a handbrake. I intend to put one on but if I don't need to for rego I will leave it till later as I have some other stuff to get done before Lennox Head - does anyone know if I will have to have the handbrake connected for rego? I havent had one on the 3 vans I've registered after rebuilding in NSW. The inspector never asked for one. I cant see why you would have to have one, as the van isnt going anywhere unless attached to a tow vehicle.
But every state is different. Why not ring the inspector you are going to use & ask the question. If he says yes, ring another (until you find one that says no) ;D ;D ;D ;D

G'day Doug, We had a discussion late last year about missing handbrakes on Franklin caravans, on the sister forum for post-1970 vans (...although why anyone would want to have a discussion about Franklin vans is beyond me. ) When Franklin introduced the hydraulic brakes in the mid-1960s, it seems they didn't put any handbrake on the unit as well. Some Franklins you come across will have something fitted, but most don't. Given that you can register Franklins in every State, one would assume it's not a mandatory requirement. I think JBJ's idea of searching for the 'right' inspector is a good one, if you come across any problems. cheers, Al.

I thought the handbrake /brakelock mechanism was mandatory at least on cable operated trailer brakes. Reason?? If you disconnect a van on a slope the "handbrake"will hold it without chocking the wheels. While i worked at the council all trailers fitted with brakes had the serrated tops on thier couplings painted half green.. half red>... Reason?? Anyone who was attaching a trailer to a vehicle was required to pull the handle on the brake up... if the locking lever that is hinged 'pivoted on the handle could be drawn back more than halfway... that is into the red section we where required to take the trailer to the mechanics at work and get them to adjust the cable turnbuckle up so the brake would be fully applied in the green front half of the serated section. We had one double axled 8x5 trailer do a runner down a hill . Too many boneheads had been towing the trailer with the brake still applied and worn the brake shoes down to a point where the brakes where non existant. So.... Yup.. all vans with brakes .. no matter whether they are cable...... hydraulic ....should ( even if it is not legislation in your state) have a manual overide handbrake on them that works. Dunno how you would set this up if your van has electric brakes. Vans that are lighter than the minimum weight requiring brakes would get away with a couple of chocks i suppose My florins worth.. Thanks guys I will ring around and suss out a "friendly" inspector. I will be hooking up the handbrake later I'm just a bit pressed getting everything together before next weekend given I only actually have two days off between then and now! (Iwork 12 hour shifts so its REAL hard trying to get motivated after a work day ...) One less job to do yay!

Well I got the rego done today and it wasn't needed - he asked about it (not the same guy I spoke to on the phone when I was sussing it out) and I just said it has never had one ... BUT I didn't know you have to have a fire extinguisher for rego .... AND I had to get the ATM stamped on the draw bar .... But its done now so happy days While I was there this pulled in behind me, but didn't get much of a chance to chat, he says its 1975 (yes I mentioned the classic forum): Cheers, Doug.

Hi doug Shes registered.... thats good news. Point i was making in my last reply was that brakes arent just for slowing you up while travelling. They are there to prevent runaways when unhitched fom the tow vehicle. Classic vans I live about 3K fom a local RTA acredited weighbridge and see a hell of a lot of Classic vans getting hauled over there for weight tickets and re- registering. A fair percentage of them have been "jacked up".. aka ,,, Offroadised. Seems the price tag on those big fancy late model off road vans has sent a lot of Grey nomad 4x4 -ers back to the drawing board and they are snapping up solid ( abiet .. heavy) classic vans and sliding off road chassis, springs and big wheels under them for that big trip . I'm hearing you Reddo, the van will be getting a handbrake set up - I just didn't need the hassle of setting it up before the weekend at Lennox Head. Now I've got a bit of breathing space I will figure something out - much easier to pull a handbrake on than to carry chocks around... BTW Lennox Head was a great weekend away, good to meet a heap of members with over 30 vans there - couldn't get around to everyone that was there but there will be other runs.
