G,day Mark, mate i would check for spark at the coil, i bet you have dirty or closed up points, clean them carefully and get the gap right. If you have done that when you take the coil lead out and crank it over you should get a nice blue spark, if not go back to the points, if you get a weak yellowy spark it will be either the coil or condenser. Hope this helps. If they have fuel compression and spark they will make a noise. ;D Nice Guardsvan, Dad had a couple when i was young. We walked a lot. check you have power on the + side off the coil in case the old wiring is dodgy. Just noticed in your pic that you have a resistor in your coil wire CHUCK IT OUT, they are a major source of problems, Remember LUCAS PRINCE OF DARKNESS made them, they were used to stop static in the radio, you can,t hear a radio in a Guardsvan for all the screaming. Hi Mark,
You need lots of choke with these old Standard motors. My old grey fergie requires full choke, near max hand throttle & starts every time now - was not always this way though as after 6 months of difficult starting I found that someone had installed an inline filter between the fuel bowl & the carbie. Good idea except it was installed backwards. Invested $8 in a new filter installed right way round - big arrow on outlet indicates direction of flow. Worth a look to see if you have such a filter!

All else fails.. Give it a snort of "Start You Bastard".. about $8.00 a can... Two shots for the carb and one up your nostrils... Hey.. it works for me.... ;D ;D ;D Just the shot for hangovers and those mornings when ya feelin a bit sluggish .. I can sympathise with the old roundy vangaurd. Just dont forget the bad experience i had with the .. "secret double naught agent spy Mark V11 Humber supersnipe" i had all those years ago. Didnt like startin easily.. no matter if it was hot or cold.. Near burnt the car and the shed of Invention down. How would i have explaind that to MI5 Curse you carb diaphrams and sticky dampers. Yuo could try walking in circles chanting ... Ohm.. Ohm .. Ohm "".. to Joe Lucas .. Prince of Darkness. Regards The ever helpfull Reddo.. on the far side.. Ps .. can come over and help push if you pay the airfares both ways and feed me alcohol as required. ;D ;D

G'day Mark, That old Vanguard is so reminiscent of the scene in the 50's it would have been hard for you to resist buying it...... did you go looking for it or........... did it fall in your lap They might have done OK in the Redex trials but by the 1960's they were being used as paddock bashers and in this photo taken at Burleigh Heads around 1967....... Holdens ..... Holdens..... Holdens everywhere, and one lonely Vanguard, looks like he might have been towed there by the FJ in front Cobber. Hold-ons everywhere he sez....conveniently ignoring the big guns of the day in center stage....Customline and the '63 Stude...... ;D ;D

Re all those Holdens and 1pommie Vanguard.......if you look carefully (and with both eyes...not just one eye)...you will see what appears to be Humber Series Super Snipes(or could be Humber Series hawks, both UK vehicles...(oh and I reckon I can see a Volks Kombi there too! (Go Humbers!)

We have sometimes been heard to say that our forum has the advantage over that other thing (Facebook) of being a long term reference point. …..And so it is 😜 Attachments:
