G'day Mark, what a great little Vanguard ....the folks that built our yellow van used to tow it from Melbourne to Queensland every year with a Ph.1 just like that....the van even had Vanguard wheels on it ( which are the same bolt pattern as post '49 Chevy...if you want to mix and match ;D).....congrats on a good find....cheers, Col.

G'day Mark, That old Vanguard is so reminiscent of the scene in the 50's it would have been hard for you to resist buying it...... did you go looking for it or........... did it fall in your lap They might have done OK in the Redex trials but by the 1960's they were being used as paddock bashers and in this photo taken at Burleigh Heads around 1967....... Holdens ..... Holdens..... Holdens everywhere, and one lonely Vanguard, looks like he might have been towed there by the FJ in front Cobber. Hold-ons everywhere he sez....conveniently ignoring the big guns of the day in center stage....Customline and the '63 Stude...... ;D ;D

G'day Col You and I are familiar with this incredible site in the UK but I'm not sure how many others on this forum have spent time browsing through it...... I find a new section every time I go looking. Anyhow.......... Click Here to find a page on the Phase 1 Vanguard, including one with a caravan in New Zealand. Cobber.

What a beauty Mark ! That Vanguard is similar to the 1st car that towed our family van, it was black, Dad soon bought a Ford V8, then a '51 Mk11 Super Snipe followed, then the '55 & finally '57 Customline, so a good mix of Pommie & Ford. I love em all too. ST

humpyboy says: " Hey Mark, if I'm an FX/FJ man like yourself then what are you doin buying something like that? in all honesty I don't really care what make they are I like em all." was only joking humpyboy .....I like 'em all too .....regardless of what they are ......... I even like this: ...... ......but it wouldn't make a good tow car .......tooo heavy in the rear end with all that machinery in the boot thanks guys for your comments re the phase 1 ...................... Mark

......but it wouldn't make a good tow car .......tooo heavy in the rear end with all that machinery in the boot Hi Mark, On the contrary, the Tatra would make a great tow car...the weight in the back is balanced by the weight under the bonnet. The engine in the back is just the spare... ;D ;D ;D Sorry couldn't resist it. It's a very old joke usually told about Beetles: Two little old ladies are driving down the road when their new Beetle stops. When they look under the bonnet they are dismayed to see that the engine has dropped out on the road somewhere. They brighten up when one of them says "We don't have to worry - there's a spare engine in the boot". Boom, boom. Back to more important matters. I agree with everyone else. That Phase 1 is just gorgeous - no other word for it when it's in that rich maroon. Now how about dropping another little hint about "that plan". I'm guessing you've got a tear drop with a back end that echoes the rear of the Phase 1. Am I warm or am I cold? Don Ricardo

Don R says: " how about dropping another little hint about "that plan". I'm guessing you've got a tear drop with a back end that echoes the rear of the Phase 1. Am I warm or am I cold?"One of our members over here has a lovely little teardrop that would look awesome behind the Phase 1 ......but he won't give me first right of refusal ......maybe coz its not for sale ;D so ....the plan is pretty simply really .........a coat of two tone marone & cream paint on the Don 100 that was in Mildura, ......and hook it behind the Phase 1 Cobber ......the lil van in your photo looks very much like Shilo ......its distinctive positioning of the side window: Interesting ......Shiloh is obviously homemade, and I haven't seen another the same to date

and finally, some interior pics of the ol' pommy towcar: the phase 1 steering on the Phase 1 Vanguard is interesting to say the least ........you'd be a thrillseeker to drive quickly round roundabouts and curbed chicanes The steering is best described by a motoring writer doing a road test on an early Phase 1 for the Popular Classic magazine January 1993: " When negotiating corners, the word "anticipation" is prominent in your mind. If it isn't, the word "fear" soon would be. Cornering is like steering a ship, and you seem to need to turn the wheel a considerable time before the car actually changes course - it's almost as if the steering components telegraph a message down the line to each other that a turn is due, with nothing happening until the last nut or grommet has been informed." Couldn't said it better myself ;D ! under the dash is mounted this neat Ferris picnic radio an underbonnet light .....probably aftermarket the Massey Ferguson tractor powerplant ;D gotta luv the recommended oils on the oil filla cap Energol Duckhams Mobiloil Shell Castrol Essolube must've been the best of pommy oils in the early 50's and yep, still got the original tools Mark

Not happy Jan I know its about minus 3 degrees in the Beverley shed at this time of the year, .....but why is it that 3 Chevs, and 3 Holdens, including a 6 volt Holden and an 8 volt Chev (which are normally bastards to start) all started without a problem, yet the ol' pommy tow car just refused to start Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the UK a colder climate than Aus .......much colder? .......shouldn't then the Aussie Holdens and Chevs not start, .....but the ol' pommy car will start. All have been sitting for the same amount of time, 3 weeks. I don't get it Brand new battery, checked spark of which there is plenty , fuel in the bowl .......removed dizzy cap, checked for moisture, cleaned & replaced, removed plugs (I got ripped .....the bloody thing only has 4 ....my other cars all have 6 ) ........cleaned the plugs, checked gaps, replaced ......direct fed fuel into the carby, opened throttle right up ........crank crank crank ......not even a splutter ......zilch, nil, nothing ......what the Got the crank handle outta the original tool kit (hey .......the Holdens & Chevs don't have that ;D) .......found the secret little section of the grille that hinges open to allow crank handle insertion .........checked compression .........all good I give up ......next I was going to winch it onto the truck, and jump start it whilst rolling down the ramps .......but ...........cbf !!

G'day Mark, Not happy Jan? You should a happy chappy instead! This is the way English cars of that era (and later!) are supposed to behave. Mine always did! So instead of being 'not happy', just be proud that your car is such a good example of the marque! Yep, definitely way cool. Don Ricardo Sorry - can't offer any suggestions regarding a remedy for your troubles...
