Hi Doug
Its been a while since I have visited your thread (since the mattress went in), you are coming along well with the project. I know what you mean about adding to the bottom of the list ;D.
As I said when I saw you last, I like options 1 and 5 of your designs, as many others as it turns out, whatever you decide on will work I'm sure.
Great work on the doors, have you thought of a fix for the straight door versus bent wall?
Keep up the good work!

Thanks Di and Peter I have decided that the door is fine ... mainly cause I don't want to try and fix it! Might try minimising it with some builders bog when it gets painted, but I dont want to end up with big chunks of it falling off and looking horrible - would look worse than the gap! Cheers Doug

Still considering options for the van's paint scheme, just to show that we are looking at the suggestions ... Derk: Gordon: Rob and Cathy: John: And even your mate Al!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Seriously though, I reckon something like how it might have been branded as a Skyline could look good …. I’m sure we’ll settle on something we like, thanks again to all those who put up ideas. Cheers Doug

What if you took the little "skyline" logo and move it to the front of pic 1 and put it in the black line there? ?

Hi Doug
I like the suggestion put forward by Gordon, the shape of the design mirrors the rear shape of the FJ mudguard, and as Humpyboy suggested, the brand name could be incorporated near the front of that design too.

So now that the van has a decent home, its time to get stuck in and get some stuff sorted before we go away ... First up, the back end: Apart from the dodgy paint job, we knew about he RHS rear corner, it was breaking out and the bondwood is soft on the edge from about halfway up the window right down to the bottom corner. The rear window will also be getting overhauled. It has never worked as a window, I wouldn't mind trying to go back to the original fixed but ventilation won the day. So its got to work or its not worth having, also I don't know why anyone would bother filling up a window with plywood, and goop the thing shut! Time to make a start .... its not long till the point of no return is reached as the J mold is just stuck on, the screws are just the heads the rest is rusted away So after an hour or so, this is what I ended up with ... LHS not too bad, maybe been repaired previously??? Although it seems fairly original from a novices point of view. RHS was as expected, or maybe not quite as bad as I thought it would be... Went exploring to find solid bondwood, its not too far in ;D ;D ;D ;D The lines are a few options running about in my head as to where to cut... And found some daylight The two sides are like chalk and cheese, this is the ply from the LHS next to the window, I don't think it would be original but I wouldn't know. The original internal lining is still in place, but rotted pretty bad, it has just had new stuff put over the top. I will be leaving it for now, I might remove it at some stage in the future when the inside gets a paint. For now I'll paint it over and not worry about it. So spent the arvo running all over the place picking up bits n pieces so we can have a good run at it over the Easter break. Let the fun begin!!!! Cheers Doug

G'day Doug, Don'tcha just love the ol' "rip-tear-bust" part of the job?! Let's ya get in touch with yer inner caveman! ;D That plywood stamp is fairly recent, so that's probably why that LHS is still looking pretty good. Saves you the hassle of having to do that side, ay? Great job on the carport. If you can knock that sort of thing up in a couple of weeks, a ply repair on the van will be a doddle. I guess you realise by now the rear louvre windows are from the 1970s, so the plywood 'glass pane' was probably an attempt to make them look 'vintage' heh heh. cheers, Al.

Absolutely Al, and the rip and tear continued today! A bit of a survey of what is damaged ... LHS at the top where the roof joins, a little rot is up in there but not too bad, it can wait till the roof comes off (after Cowra!) RHS about the same, but can get to this as the bodwood is a little soft beside it ... Preparing for surgery: First cut is the deepest! This is a little spot, that I ended up ripping into to get the worst of it off and painting it, then supported with a block of timber. The inside was still good. View from the inside of the above: Managed to find some good framing, made a simple join which will have a bolt right through it when the side goes on. The bearer was rotted at the end where it joins onto the chassis and needed repair Just a couple of general shots cause I could! (must of wanted a break …) Bearer repair, because it was just a short bit I braced it from behind and replaced the existing chassis bolt with a longer one right through. There will be another right through the repair and the brace once the bond wood goes back on the side. Finally into some replacing of framing, starting to get some shape back into it … Tracy getting into the window More framing Frames nearly done, will need to put the side back on to finish, but that’s tomorrows job! The Cask is waiting! Cheers Doug and Tracy.

Hi Dave and Tracy Ambitious repairs ahead of Cowra, but you are certainly doing a lovely thorough job, which will last for years. Well worth all your hard work! Three days of the long weekend to go - no flagging now! Cheers Seeshell

The tops off one now though! ;D ;D Oh ... and did you notice Tracy's nice shiny window frames? Huh??? She'll be after you at Cowra for not noticing them!!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Unbelievable! You 2 are legends!
Rob says you've done in a weekend what it's taken us months to get to on the castle, AND you've had time left over to take photos & post them in this thread!
Totally impressive!

Hi everyone, Thanks Rob and Cathie we are on a bit of a mission ... Derk, yep you got it in one ... but now Tracy's got your number buddy Another big day today, we have got the sheeting on the back: Got the window frame back together and trial fitted it, can't do the windows yet because the plywood that was in it ended up being too big (I gave it to them as a template) ... and we won't go into why we couldn't do the other one aye Derk... here she is hanging off the sander (again) Cut out some rot along the back edge, nothing structural so pretty straight forward. Primed up the bum!!! Made up the new section, it needs a little finessing but is pretty close, will be fitted up tomorrow. Someone on here a while ago mentioned about checking the chassis bolts, we had decided when we were planing what we were going to do to just replace them all in case, turns out that was a good call ..... Probably gave up the ghost when it was nudged by the sander, it was just hanging by a thread! Anyway, happy hour is calling Happy Easter to all!! Doug and Tracy

Thanks Dosse well as far as both of us having a pretty face I think you got that half right! Well the back end is back under control; it just needs some bog work, paint, the window put back in, and the trim and lights installed now... So time to tackle the front .... We nearly stopped there, given the time constraints, btu the board under the windows was visibly rotted, and it would have meant pulling it apart again at a later date, so we decided to take the corner windows out to see if it could be changed over now. Well, as we knew might happen, the job got a bit bigger The metal rolled panel is probably past is use by date, shouldn't be too hard to get replicated... There was a bit of hidden rot under the window sill, still, not too bad ... But above the window there was always an ominous crack in the bond wood, so now seemed like the best time to tackle that too: Dunno what the alfoil was supposed to do! If you dig far enough eventually you come accross some real wood!! Pulled up stumps a little early today as we had another couple of little jobs to attend to, this is close of play today: Another day at it tomorrow! Cheers Doug and Tracy.

Only a few of weeks before Cowra and you decide to restore the van now spose you'll tow it there with your FJ ute as well, talk about a man on a mission can only guess your not planning any sleep for the next couple of weeks both of you will need the break at Cowra but I don't think you'll get much rest there either, it is however coming along nicely.
