G'day Doug, Very good framing job there! What do you intend to put on top of the framework for the mattress to sit on? Plywood sheeting, or slats, or something else? I can see myself copying your framework into my project. I like the lightweight but strong appearance of it. That sort of framework would allow plenty of airing of the mattress if slats were used on the top, or maybe something like masonite pegboard if it didn't add too much weight. Also like the hidey hole for the potty. You've given me some good ideas to think about for when I get to that stage. cheers, Al.

G'day Al Thanks for that I am pretty happy with the way its come along. The plan for the top is 5mm masonite .... Why??? Because it was already under the house! And thats all that was on the single bunks - with much bigger gaps than the frame I made up too I might add! The frame is only slightly heavier I reckon than the cupboard I pulled out, although the new mattress will be considerably heavier than the old foam ones. Still, with a bit of a cull of some of the "stuff" that was in the cupboards, maybe the weight gain won't be too bad overall! Cheers Doug

Hi Doug
You'll have to get Tracy to take the rocks out of the cupboards ........
Glad to see you got it back to usable for Chrissy. Jellybean is almost ready to go again too. We now have power - both 240 & 12 volt, so that will be a luxury. Kitchen has been "modified" but in no way "done".

Thanks Sharon and John / Di for the comments, Tracy wasn't too impressed with the van falling off the car but the bed was great for the Christmas trip, would have been dragging around a bad back for half of it on the old foam ones. Limit was about three nights on them. So now that’s done we decided its time to start tidying up that horrible door .... Seeing Troy and Nicole’s Franklin, we decided that we may as well go down that path as well with the separate inward folding screen door. Ours had the tell tale signs of being configured this way as well so its sort of the original style, if not "faithful"... Troy and Nicole's Franklin ... So started with the screen door, made up a light frame first: And added a panel from stuff lying around under the house ... the panel is a little low but I can always add a bit of a brace across the open area if needed, will decide once its hung for the trial fit. Tomorrow will be trial fit and paint for the screen door, by the way, if anyone happens to have a small door handle similar to this that we can use it would be great … let me know! We then moved on to the door, and after the expected struggle with hard stuck and painted in SLOT HEAD SCREWS, took off the back panel to reveal a bit of the dreaded wood rot … fairly sure this won’t be the last of it we find! Under the Aluminium panel that sits over the lower half of the door: Rather than mess about with trying to patch up this door, we will make a new one, just have to find someone that can supply the correct size timber, or at least close to it … the big green shed had no 6mm marine ply in a big enough sheet, and doesn’t sell Meranti anymore either! Oh well, tomorrow is another day! Cheers Doug.

You'll be a lot happier building a new door than trying to repair the one you have.

I reckon its the easier way out Derk and a better result too. Frame done for the door today, has come together well, also cut the ply so might get it together tomorrow after work ... Dry fit: All went together pretty well, not too bad for me anyway!

Bit more done today, outside door is mounted up and looks a lot better than the dodged up old one ... Only trouble is, the door is straight, but the van is not

Well the doors are done - only a temporary colour but they are fitted up and functional ... Out with the old, in with the new! Quite happy with the look, works in the same way as the original would have done, you have either the main door shut and the screen latched back, or you have the main door latched back, and the screen door closed... Another little job ticked off the list, just got to stop adding more on to the bottom of it!! Cheers Doug.

So we are starting to think colour schemes for the van (it should be painted before the Nationals) and have come up with a few options ... Most likely so far: Other possibilities: We would be interested in your thoughts ... yep we know we have to decide for ourselves but we are interested in feedback! Cheers Doug and Tracy

Hi Doug, I'm drawn towards option 3, option 5 maybe but change the Black area to the same size/shape as the Red line, I'll get back under my rock now

Hi Doug For what it's worth, I like #1 and #4, with #1 being my favorite. The splash of colour too is very nice. Follows the old 60-30-10 rule house painters use which is pleasing to the eye. Cheers Seeshell

Very nice of you to repaint your van in the different colour schemes - must have taken you ages ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I like #5 but from a practical point would go tor #3, cos I think the black lower section will show the stone chips very soon, unless you have rubber stone mats on the tow vehicle. Would be interesting to hear from members who have already got a black colour scheme about that point.

No 1 gets my vote Tis good to bring black into the colour scheme, ...but not too much, ...........black is not a favourable caravan colour. The thin red band (not flaired) between the black and cream is a nice touch. No 5 is typical of paint schemes (flaired towards the rear of the van) of the late 30's and 40's, but by the late 50's, paint schemes had changed. That's my two bob worth ;D Mark

Hi Doug
we like a cross between #1 & #5, in other words, a slightly fatter red stripe than #1, & less red than #5 at the rear of the stripe. It looks very dramatic!

G'day Doug, I had to slap a bloke down today, on your behalf. He reckons you should paint it to match the RACQ tilt trays, because it will spend most of its time behind them. I told him to pull his head in and stop being a goose, and to give you credit for all the hard work being done on your yoot. ;D Needless to say, he's not getting a beer from you at Cowra. ps. I gather you don't like the Franklin heritage design of a single stripe around the midriff?? cheers, Al.

I like the last one but maybe with the red and black brought right to the back, finishing where the side starts curving up. Just my opinion...... Cheers. John
