I collect old instruction and repair manuals, so what you say, well I retort, no I ask ,,, I have a brochure from a Van I found, (with no fridge or Ice box), the " Silent Knight" kerosine Operated refrigerator. Revised edition 1951, were these ever fitted to vans, Kero ?? or is it just a misplaced time traveller Cheers Dave

Hi Dave, Your post seems to be slipping down the list without a response, so I've resurrected it to add my thoughts. I don't have any specific knowledge of kero fridges in vans, however they were probably the next step (along with gas fridges) in the evolution after iceboxes, and before powered van sites. Given that there is endless evidence of kero cooking equipment in vans from that era, it's not a big step to believe kero fridges were also used. Other readers can confirm or deny this. For interest, the "Silent Knight" brand was developed by Sir Edward J Hallstrom (think Hallstrom fridges), and some history of Sir Edward and Silent Knight can be found here... www.adb.online.anu.edu.au/biogs/A140412b.htm Interesting stuff, cheers, Al.

hi dave there certainly were kero fridges in vans in the early 50's. have a look at alan and jenny's "marvin" - home made in the early 50's. the fridge seen in the 15th and 16 th photos in the link below is a kero fridge. vintagecaravans.proboards30.com/index.cgi?board=photo&action=display&thread=1165130331i don't know the brand (alan could tell you that) but it was installed without an outside vent and the kero fume stain can be seen (if you look very closely) up the wall behind the fridge - must have stunk the van out when operating. geoff 'n jude
