Hi Folks
Yes, very reluctantly, I have decided to sell the early 1950's Gason bondwood caravan that I spoke of late last year, just before the Christmas breakup where I had a chance to meet a few of you in a social setting. At the time I was wavering, but circumstances now compel to make the move.
This van has a LOT of history attached and I have collected it through the wonderful assistance of Don Ricardo (Richard) where you can also read about the Gason company of Ararat elsewhere in these discussion forums.
I bought it on eBay about 3 years ago in it's original condition and have tried faithfully to maintain the integrity. I have summarised what I have done to "Pleasantville" as she is known to us as.
We had the caravan checked over thoroughly after purchase and had the following work done -
1. Replaced all wiring and lights to caravan
2. Replaced wheel bearings
3. Fitted two new dual tread tyres
4. Placed over public weighbridge (weighs in at 980kg)
5. Had new compliance plate fitted
6. Inspected and re-registered (first time in 27 years) at VicRoads Benalla
7. Replaced jockey wheel
8. cleaned and stripped old lead based paint from exterior - resealed outside van totally with waterproofer, painted and completed trims
9. Replaced original vinyl in kitchen area - new 3 colour trim and piping installed
10. Repaired internal watertank.
11. Replaced all weatherproof rubber window seals and refitted windows.
The van has just had the rego paid and is current till November 2010.
The van has all original fittings inside including the red laminex table, black and white vinyl floor tiles and original cupboard hardware including wooden plate racks.
The fridge is actually an ice box complete with original Fahrenheit thermometer. There is an original water tank complete with tap that we fill for drinking water. It even has the original canvas striped annexe, wooden poles with metal ferrules and ropes and pegs in a storage cupboard of it's own on the outside of the van.
It does not have the gas line working as it was disconnected before we purchased it - I'm sure that it wouldn't be too hard to fit a new one. But it does have the original stove intact. Also it does not have a mattress on the double bed as we replaced all old bedding when we bought it - thought it best to leave a new purchase to the new owner who can choose their own type and firmness.
I will try to upload the photos we have of the van, but can certainly email a full set to anyone interested.
I do have a figure in mind (we'd all love the vans to be worth a mint wouldn't we, but need to be realistic) so if you want to PM me, I'd be happy to start discussions.
The van can be viewed in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne at a mutually convenient time. If you are just busting to see it, please call me on 0438 811 040.
My contact details and price will come through on an email if you are interested.
