UPDATE ON THINGS The caravan park manager rang me today and all is good. Dosse has advised that he & Sutcac will bring an extra barbeque to the park for Saturday night plus I will also have my portable barbie (big brother of the mini one I had at Mooloolaba) He has advised that he has allocated 31 sites at present with everyone close together although there may be a few modern vans scattered here and there amongst us due to other bookings.(there is still room for more bookings but I need to know soon) He has asked me about site allocation so I have revised the list I put on the site a few weeks ago so that the styles of vans are together. ie Bondwoods, Olympics, Teardrops, Aluminium etc. As usual everyone will move around the group but if most are happy with this idea I will list the amended list in the next few weeks. If you have a spcial request re a site beside another particular van please ask now. (The deadline for this is 2 weeks prior to the event as I will be meeting with the caravan park then) The park wants me to assist with site allocation on the day so if I have most of it done prior it will be easier when everyone arrives. In addition to my writing for Leaded Magazine I also freelance a bit so will be compiling some stories with photos for various magazines etc over the weekend, hence another reason to group vans together. There may also be other media over the weekend. If you are intending to stay extra days before or after the Friday & Saturday nights let me know so that I can confirm your sites. I am now looking at arriving there Thursday afternoon. The fact that one of the best fish and chip shops I have ever visited being around the corner is part reason for my extra night) but I will venture to the Etamogah on Friday morning. I am heading up the coast on Tuesday the 17th February for meetings with park management, Etamogah Pub and Alexandra Headlands Surf Life Saving Club to clarify a few points and will lodge any extra details on the site in that day after. (Sutcac & Graham- as you are locals I will contact you direct to verify the best route into Maroochydore from Etamogah as I hope to have a few vans meet at the pub this year and a run through Cotton Tree may be a good promotion as well. ) I will also list an official invitation to the weekend for any member travelling in a Queensland car on historic rego so that you are covered by attending an organised event in accordance with SIV rego requirements. **special note. In the past 2 weeks I have had about 10 customers at the tyre shop who have had blow outs on caravans and boat trailers that have sat for a while and then blown out on the first trip. If you are unsure on your tyres call me at work 3889 6768 & I'll do my best to help you out with anything from your light truck tyres to white walls or what ever. Here is cheers to a great weekend away. Rod G. PS. I am again looking for a small bondwood, aluminium or fibreglass van (been reading too much on the Olympics) that I could tow behind my Hillman Hunter wagon. If you know of anything in Brisbane or 2 hrs either way let me know Dosse - I hope to look at the aluminium if it is still there in the next two weeks. If I find something the teardrop will be on the market.

Hi Rod,
Boy you sure are putting in a lot of effort, & I thank you for that. Its a lot different trying to organise for 30 odd, against the previous runs we have had of 10 to 20.
I've been asked for you to include Sue & Izzy with my entry.
Doesnt worry me at all where we get sited, as long as its powered , & relatively close to amenities.
Not long now to what will probably be the 3rd largest attendance of vintage caravans in Australia .
Its progressed from Fingal a couple of years ago,in November 2005, when Earlee, Santa 28A, Roehm 3108, Suzann & Matt(Shulzy), & us had our first organised S.E. Queensland run.
From 5 to 30 plus in just over 3 years.
We must be doing something pretty right.
All of those viewers thinking of coming, get your selves & your vans(if possible) up to this run. They are always friendly, & heaps of fun.

JBJ Thank you for the comments. It has grown larger than what I expected but comments from people phoning me about using their van more often with the group means the effort is worth while. Just tidying up a few things before hand means everything should run smoothly and I can have a beer in my hand a bit sooner on the Friday afternoon.
One last comment about a question yesterday. Sorry but no dogs are permitted in any of the Maroochydore area caravan parks.

"PRICE UPDATE" Originally $33 but discounted to $28 per night. The Park manager "Greg" has just advised me he has made the discount an even 20 percent off normal off peak rates. Now $ 26.50 per site per night or $160 per week. Those intending to stay extra days before or after please email me direct so that I can confirm your sites. I will be there from the Thursday night but others have asked about staying longer. I will publish the current list including order of sites in next day or so & ask you check back to ensure I have everyone included. Also I need a rough number of people meeting at Etamogah on the Friday morning at 10am. Look forward to catching up with a few of the group who are going to Ormiston for Australia day. Best contact number for me is mobile 0417 620 877 Rod G.

Neil Already allocated in the 32 vans. There are a few more sites available if anyone else wants to join in. but I need to know soon. In collating the groups I am on a steep learning curve on the different names of Vintage caravans but alas mine is a no name teardrop.

BARBEQUES NEEDED On the Saturday night we are going to have our usual group barbeque at the caravan park but with up to 60 or so people this year we need more than just the caravan park barbeque. If you have a portable barbeque can you bring it along. I had mentioned SUTCAC would bring his larger one but it would mean dragging it off his balcony whereas a few smaller barbies for communal use would help a lot. I have a normal size portable SUPERCHEF (plus the mini version I had last year) but a few more would help on th night. Cheers Rod G.

Hi Rod.. I can help out with a portable BBQ with an alloy plate about 2ft round. However....................... Would it not be just as easy to stagger meal time and start cooking in say 3 lots of 20 at a time. Maybe not everyone will want a BBQ on saturday night and you might find the numbers are less than 60. Just dont panic mate. I am one who is happy to sit back out of the way and let everyone who is religous about meal times get in and cook their meal first. We would all still be hanging around the same area anyway having pre dinner drinks These are the sort of problems that you come across when you try to hard. Go with the flow old mate.. she'll be right on the night. If all else fails we can tear the bootlid off a....... ................................. Humber or something.. sit it on 4 bricks and light a fire under it and have... hummmmmmmmmburgers Reddo.. the ever helpfull ;D

Hi Rod,
As Reddo said, it will be OK on the night. We normally carry a small round gas barbie & bottle. I'm sure a lot will have similar.
Your doing a great job, but slow down & dont stress.
It always works out. Our Canungra run proved that, with more than enough workers & food to feed the masses.
Not long now & we'll all be " ON THE ROAD AGAIN"

Eric & Lorraine Everyone would love to see you there. I have asked the park to put a few extra sites available. Just PM me with details including the type of car you are towing with and the van etc and whether you are meeting at Etamogah or going stright to the park on Friday.
JBJ. Not stressing just calculating. Unfortunately my home phone so also internet there isn't working so am operating from elsewhere. With the barbeques I am sure Sutcac owes me a beer so I didn't want him hurting his back getting the barbeque off the balcony and not being able to deliver.
I have been in contact with the surf club and their chef is back on Monday so I will email him and see what he can do for us. They advise it is a short 400m walk / crawl from the surf club to the caravan park so think a walk home on the beach may be on the cards. Rod G.

REDDO I am bringing the soap for your mouth. Sacrificing a Humber/ stablemate to my faithful Hillman is certainly not on. Although I know the boot catch on a Hunter sedan is a perfect bottle opener. Maybe the Supersnipe is the same. I should bring the Sunbeam up as well. The Voice of Rootes Group Cars has Spoken.
ps You are right in that all may not want a barbie as one of the best fish and chip shops in QLD is just around the corner.

This trip will be the last for my teardrop as thanks to Dossie I arranged to buy a Carapark today. Pharghan and Reddo you can relax when i am lurking near your vans now as I only want photos of the fit out inside. It is an aluminium carapark 10/9 but also badged HUNTER JUNIOR. Dossie reckons it was an omen as I will be towing it with a Hunter and the serial number "61" is the year I was born. It is solid but needs a full interior and paint. After our weekend I'll advertise the teardrop so I can stuck into the carapark and get it ready for a run later this year. Rod G.

Hey rustynme, that Carapark you have, is it the Superb with steel cladding? Hillmansafari, I think you're bending the truth a bit trying to convince us that you were born in 1961 Just come back from a trip to Quirindi (south of Tamworth). Made another attempt to try to coax a fellow to part with his Superb that was rusting to pieces. Reckoned it wasn't for sale and even if it was, I couldn't afford it!! No wonder he lives in a town called Currabubula. DAH! Those 10/9 Caraparks seem to be around everywhere. Spotted one in a shed in Murrarundi, also gutted. Been used for seed storage, cos it was ratproof! What an ignomious end! Ray Ray

Maroochydore can't come quick enough now as I hope to debut a new van. By chance i mentioned to a friend about the carapark and was told of a one owner small aluminium not far from home. It looks like a bondwood but is a small aluminium 10 foot 6 in body length with possible model PIXIE 10. Apart from the brushed on paint and 10 inch mini wheels the van is ready to go. I will try and raise it for some 13 inch mags and white wall tyres but other than that it is complete and still registered. It appears fairly light so should tow ok behind the Hillman.
I will sort the site list in the next few days and am sussing out alternatives for Friday dinner as Alex heads surf club wants us seated by 6pm.At a beachside caravan park in Queensland summer isn't that still "beer under the annex time ?" Rod G.

LIST OF NAMES SENT IN THE NEXT MESSAGE Unfortunately I have misplaced some of my notes so please send me a pm to correct or add names to this list. The sites are apparently close together around the park but there may be a scattering of non group modern vans amongst us as well. The list below is grouped so i can organise sites in this order and you will see is keeping the tyes of vans together. ie Teardrops, bondwoods, Sunliners, Olympics etc. IF YOU NEED A CHANGE PM ME ASAP I am going to the caravan park next Tuesday the 17th to get site numbers etc and whilst I will endeavour to deal with any and all requests I will have to work in with the park management. I will have an update on a Friday night dinner venue as Alex Surf Club wanted 5.30pm to 6pm sit down but I am aiming for something less formal at 7.30pm. I will be speaking with media in the next week or so and ask if you have let any media know about the weekend be it tv news, magazine or newspaper to pm me with the details so that I know about any other situation as this is a large group and it is better to keep releases from one point of contact. Amongst all this I will be working on the axles and wheels of my Pixie van as well as the rear springs on the Hunter to ensure I get up there BUT hopefully all will go smoothly.
EXTRA NIGHTS:- In my notes I had listed names and dates of extra nights required by some members. Can you please PM me again with those details. It is still $26.50per night before or after our official dates. Due to the size of the list it is in the next message. Rod G.

RE DINNER ON FRIDAY NIGHT Alex Heads surf club wanted us seated by 6pm at latest and meals were a bit more $ than I hoped. Maroochydore Surf Club - 5 mins walk in other direction were a bit more obliging. 6.30pm sit down for most and don't mind if a few are coming in a bit after that. Meals - chef specials start from $ 8.50 to $18 plus a bit extra for those big steaks etc but it seems pretty good value, later sit down and closer to the park plus overlooks the beach. i made a tentative boking for 40 but can reduce or increase if necessary closer to the day. That allows most to arrive and set up and have a beer before dinner plus others can wander up a bit later. Thanks to those who have PM'd me. My little van is already having surgery with the axle removed and a new one being built to hopefully accomodate the alloy wheels and white wall tyres. I am now learning about the timber based old vans so don't mind me looking under your vans over the weekend as after the teardrop it is a new experience for me. Rod G.

Hi Rod Just a thought, but for a bit of fun how about we all bring pictures of vehicles/vans we had in our teens/early 20s or/and cars we had of interest? Could be a bit of fun remembering 'the good ol days' and 'if only I still had that now' Cheers Neil

Neil That would mean admitted I had two Hillman Hunters way back in 78. Whoops I suppose that is actually better than admitting that I have had 24 Hunters in the past 5 years. Picked up a good set of coasters and a retro camping chair at a garage sale this morning so my 60's items are growing.
In reality I think that is a good idea Neil. I am also trying to contact the local Lions Club or other charity up there who may be collecting for the bushfire appeal. I figure they may be able to put a few charity tins around the vans and anyone who has a look inside the vans may want to donate a gold coin or two towards the appeal. Rod G.
