ATHOL HEDGES CARAVAN HISTORYAthol Hedges Pty Ltd, Melton Road, Northgate, Qld
Here is a advert for Athol Hedges of Northgate, Brisbane including the "Aly Van". There is no date on it, nor indication of where it was published, except on the back is a coloured photo and part of a story about the countryside of Qld. So it may have been a tourist publication or just a magazine. If the photo is to be believed, there was quite some reflection off the old girl. What a traffic hazard in bright sunlight before some patina developed! And a close up of the Aly, being pulled my first love, an FE Holden. Have any of these vans survived? Cheers, David (source: posted by ridgydidge, Mar 21, 2007)

Hi All I inspected one these A-H vans in the Ballina area yesterday, and was in reasonably good condition, with plain aluminium finish (no paint). I think it would have been about 11' model. One feature that was interesting was the method/design of the opening windows, and the locking appeared to be via two bolts passing through the window frame (ext) to the inside wall and just simply tighten them up, (maybe via a wing nut), but I saw it as a two person job. A very solidly constructed van. Cheers boblor

G'day Mate I just bought an AH myself and I to intend to do mine up. I was wanting to get hold of a few things and wanted to know if the van you saw was for sale and or wrecking for parts, failing that I'd just love to see what another original looks like to get some direction on where to go with the renovation

Hi folks, my name is David, and as you can see I have a 1957 Athol Hedges. I bought it from condeljs and yes it does need some work. My wife, Leigh, and I have a 1961 tank Fairlane with which we will tow the caravan. I have been given a 2 year time frame to get it up and running. The old girl (not Leigh) has been knocked about and has things removed like the interior and steps. I live in Toowoomba but would like to look at other examples, photos, plans etc to plan the restoration. Any tips would be appreciated.

G'day David, Apart from the photos listed above, there is one other thread on the forum about an Athol Hedges van that was built in 1955. That one might give you some clues about the inside layout: Another Athol Hedges Aly Vancheers, Al.
