So, bought a Botterill and Fraser Bondwood 4 berth van in April 2021. Plan was to restore and have an awesome piece of Australian History. Fast forward almost a year, and the budget is blowing out. I massively over-estimated how much I could do myself, and under-estimated the cost of having it done professionally. At the current rate, to get where we want to get, it is going to be in the vicinity of $40,000 to $50,000 in total spend.
This is original timber frame repairs, full electrical rewiring with 240v/12v combo with battery etc, including fans and ducted AC, new internal and external bondwood skins, full insulation in all wall cavities, brand new custom built running chasis with electric breaks, new awning, original chiller box and breadbox retained (NO FRIDGE added), restored sink with water tank and electric pump, rebuilt original timber windows and frames, original polished timber hardwood floor, plus all the pretty things.
In the hundreds of cumulative years of experience on these boards, is there anyway this van would ever sell for close to that amount? Is there any kind of potential in the vintage van rental market that would recoup these costs? If I sold her now, with all the timber work yet to be done, would I get back the $20,000 I have already spent on the original purchase, chasis, rewiring and insulation???
At a crossroads, seeing the opportunity costs of spending this money on the van, but love the idea of the finished product!
Any advice or wisdom (or offers to purchase!) would be appreciated. Where does the market top-out for these vans??
