Ok Gents,
Settle down...
All I need to know is what I should use to lube the plunger in my pump tap? The pluger itself, is in fairly good condition, and I'm guessing that with some new lube (the old stuff has gone a bit stiff) it'll draw water nicely Cheers Chris

Hi minicamper, I'm guessing that reddo would probably have worked on these things and can offer advice, however my thinking is that a standard tap spindle lubricant would be a possibility. Available in a tube from the plumbing section in that store that you know so well cheers, Al.

Hi Chris Sorry about the late reply.. 'puter problems. Mate i have never used anything other than water to lubricate the pump. There is a leather washer in there that expands when wet and ... unfortunatley shrinks when dry. So sometimes it will take a while for the old pumps to prime themselves.
Likewise there is a piece of waxed cord that wraps around the top of the shaft to prevent water spurting out the top of the pump when the plunger has reached the top of its stroke. The pump in matilda still occassionaly squirts out the top for a while when it hasnt been used for a while.
Just have to cop a few leaks and poor pump function until things swell up. ..... bit like the side effects of aging in us males of the species.
Faster ....faster .. faster ......keep pumping ;D

Hey Reddo, I pumped and pumped to no avail. So I disassembled the pump and found the plunger to be not leather, but a type of rubber/come plastic, looks a bit like a sink plug, but without the grip in the middle and is pinky red in colour. I resorted to a little vaseline as a trial and when primed (i submersied it in a barrel) it then pumped happily away. Any thoughts on the Vas?

Hi Minicamper I have no technical knowledge, but I had the same problem with my pump and rubber seal. I put a smear of vegetable oil on the plunger, which worked fine. The only reason I used vegie oil was I wanted to use something that wasn't going to do any harm if ingested. Cheers Urkel
