G'day All,
As you may know, I'm researching the history of my 'new' van. I left the van out in light rain last night to give it its first of many water tests. When I checked this morning no water came rushing out the door (thank goodness). But I did notice that the "FRANKLIN" sign above the front window was rather wet and crinkled. I pulled the sign assembly off the van and dismantled it in the shed, and guess what? The sign is made from an old Franklin's Supermarket weekly specials flyer! (What a clever daughter of the original owner).
At the back of the sign was a piece of aluminium plate bent over the top to provide weather protection (doesn't work), and on one side of this plate was a photolithograph of a news item. See photo...
As you can see from the second supermarket page, the flyer relates to a week in late October (8 weeks to Xmas), and on the lithograph there's some news about athletics at Stawell.
On tonight's edition of "Who Wants To Be A Poor Caravan Restorer?", I have two questions that would help me date this Franklin sign:
Q1. (for 53 cents)... In what year would the NOON meat pie have been on special for 45 cents?
Q2. (for $1.06)... In what year did Richard, Sally, and Damien win their medals at Stawell Secondary College?
(you can 'phone-a-friend' for either of these questions if you wish )
I have also removed the zinc flat and rippled sheeting from the back of the van...
Apart from the nasty surprise as shown in the photos, the back of one of the rippled sheets has an old Lysaghts identification stencil on it.
So question 3 tonight (for the grand prize of $2.12) is...
Q3. Is there anything in the coding on that stencil that indicates a production date?
[As a detective might say... Any information you can provide, no matter how seemingly irrelevant, would be gratefully appreciated. When I researched my family history some years ago, sometimes it was the smallest piece of information that led to big results. I have today sent some information about the caravan to a Jewellers in Ballarat, because I was told that one of the daughters of the original owner is married to the diamond buyer for that jewellery store. I don't know her name, I don't know his name, all I have is the name of the Shop, ...and a lot of perseverance. Hope I strike gold! (...umm, I think that's an old Ballarat joke... ;D)]
Thanks All,
cheers,
Al.
