Hello All, I am new to this site and hoping to get some help with a small van I acquired recently . Being a computer dummy I am having trouble posting pictures at the moment but hope to work it out soon . The van is branded VICEROY Scenic Deluxe and from info on other threads it is probably another renamed Huntsman .It looks very close to pictures posted by AKEEPSAKE on the Phonix thread .The van is fairly original in side with sliding doors above sink and front window ,original cushions at front table without any tags , on the outside it has patterned aluminum panels front and rear and plain aluminum sheet on top . I realize without photos it would be hard to date but hopefully someone might have something to look for .On the front of the draw bar just behind the hitch left side the numbers 19 are welded ,could this be a serial number?
Hope somebody can help Cheers Paul

In the Trove archives, there is a classified advertisement in the Canberra Times for a second-hand Viceroy caravan for sale: Canberra Times Sat 19 Aug 1972, P31. That's the only information showing up in the Trove archives relating to Viceroy caravans. cheers, Al.

Hi Paull66, Welcome to the forum, and thanks for telling us about your Viceroy Scenic Deluxe caravan. As Franklin1 has intimated, we haven't heard about Viceroy caravans on the forum before, and don't have any info on them apart from what Franklin1 himself posted. Just to confuse matters, there is a modern Viceroy model van produced by Swift caravans in the UK, quite a few of which seem to have found their way to Australia. However, I am dead certain that there is no connection between those van and yours. Looking carefully at the photo with the Viceroy name plate in it, a couple of things have struck me: - There is a lighter patch on the cladding, partially covered by the Viceroy nameplate, which suggests that at one stage there was another larger nameplate in that position.
- The words 'Scenic Deluxe' appear to me to be handwritten. What do you think?
- There are three rivets above the Viceroy nameplate which suggests that there was once something attached there.
What all that suggests to me is that Viceroy may have been a caravan retailer (possibly of new caravans, but more likely second hand) that removed the nameplates of the original manufacturers of the vans they sold and replaced them with their own nameplate. There were a couple of caravan yards in Melbourne in the 60's and 70's that used to do that to every van they sold. Adding to that, I am wondering if the (apparently handwritten) Scenic Deluxe may be an indicator that your van was originally a Scenic caravan? The irony of that is that Scenic didn't build their own vans in the 60's but bought them from other caravan manufacturers and put a Scenic badge on them - an example of badge engineering. Irony apart, some Scenics were built by Huntsman in Ballarat, so that could all fit with your comment that your van looks like a Huntsman caravan. The expert on the forum who knows the most about badge engineering in Victoria in the 60's is Hughdeani. Hopefully he will see this post and give us his opinion on the origins of your van. One question: Can you tell us what state (ie Australian state) your van was in when you bought it? That info often helps us to work out who built the van, because in the 60's and earlier caravan manufacturing was largely state based and the majority of vans tended to be sold in the state they were built in and stayed there (not always, but often enough for the van's location to be a clue as to origins). Hi Don and Paul, The only Viceroys I remember looked like Wayfarers with Viceroy badges on them, and none that I saw were longer than 12ft6. Sorry, that's all I can come up with at present! Cheers Hughdeani

Sorry, I know nothing about your van But am chasing a fluorescent light the same as yours. If you decide to pull it apart or if anyone else on here knows where I can find one, I would be very interested. Thanks

Hi Derk, I too have a very broken one which I have repaired. Have trawled everywhere but cannot find anything like it. Luckily the fluoro globe still works as I worry it too is irreplaceable

sgtl,
You can still readily buy the globes for these lamps. Don't ask me for the exact part number, but they are still made (and available in the Big Green Shed, from memory).
cheers, Al.

Hi Don and thanks. the plate front and back are the same and read Viceroy Melbourne the Senic Deluxe is a sticker the light patch is from the sticker . Iwill try and get some better pictures when I get it home . I am in Kingaroy QLD and the van came from the Brisbane area before coming to the country . Would the chassis/serial number #19 be any indication of its age?
Thanks Paul

And I totally missed the 'Melbourne' below 'Viceroy'! At least that tells us where Viceroy were based. However, I'm still a bit intrigued with the fact that the 'Scenic Deluxe' sticker is obviously an add on and looks a bit less professionally done, so to speak, at least compared to the Viceroy nameplate. I guess we'll have to wait until someone comes on to the forum who can tell us a bit more. Don Ricardo

My parents purchased our first van in 1969 when I was 11 and it was a Viceroy. I’ll try to find a photo. It had bond wood sides and aluminium? roof, front and back. The sides were painted white with a light blue flash which I changed to green. I remember painstakingly outlining the new green flash with black tape! I’ve never seen another Viceroy van ever but I recognised the ‘crown’ on the plate as soon as I saw pix in prev post. It had corner windows which were right angled instead of curved and it was a design fault as they always leaked in rainy weather. Otherwise it was a great van- 14feet long with 2 single beds and a dinette that converted to a double bed. Great memories! Our first trip was to Bushy Park Cowes, Phillip Island, Victoria.

Hi Oldvangirl, Welcome to the forum and thanks for telling us about your family's Viceroy caravan.
As you've discovered from this thread, we don't know a great deal about Viceroy so it's exciting to hear about your van. Do you remember how your family came by it and where they might have bought it? I'm guessing it was second hand in 1969? It would be wonderful if you can post photos of the van if you can find some. There's instructions on how to post photos if you click here. The easiest way is to use the 'Add Attachment' button, but if you are posting photos from your mobile (as opposed to a laptop or tablet) there is an extra step needed to make the button appear. The instructions about 'Add Attachment' explain what to do. If you have any trouble posting the photos, you're very welcome to email the photos to me at caravanhistory@gmail.com and I'll be happy to post the photos for you. Don Ricardo
