Daggsey, I got my first under-age beer from a pub in Charters Towers. I was up there for a rugby league carnival when I was 15 in 1988. I went into the pub shaking and asked for a pot of fourex. The publican asked how old I was and I said "17 and a half". He looked at me and then responded with "close enough!"
That beer was bloody cold.
I hope Mr. Cruice (my old coach) doesn't read this. He thought that we were out having a team run. Perhaps we should have had a team "rum"? That might of pushed our luck a little.
Keep those stories coming. You are bringing back some school memories. A lot of representitive rugby league teams go up north from Brisbane to play in carnivals. We would stay with other players and their families. One year, this city-slicker (me) got to shoot a gun on a property outside of Cairns. I finally understood what recoil was when as a 13 year old I shot a 30-30. I don't know what that was, but it was massive. When I would get home my mum would ask "What did you do?" I would think of shooting guns, having a beer, taking a drag on a smoke, running chasing pigs through sugar cane, playing footie etc But I would just say "Nothing". Keep those pics coming.

Hi Daggsey Love the photos of the real estate. Sure is impressive. Not so sure that I would want to ride in the ambo unless I was totally with it... Hate to not enjoy the experience. I need to print off an Aussie map and plot your travels. Totally lost track of you travel... keep em coming.. bobt

Dear Daggsey and Carrotts,
Just love reading your travelogue- it's really great.
It's giving me itchy fingers to go visit some of those areas again.
Haven't been up that way for about 19 years. The photos of Charters Towers bought back memories of me visiting a distant relative for a couple of weeks - we had a lovely time.
Keep on keeping on
Luv Di

Hi Daggsey & Carrotts, & Kingy & Mez,
You guys just looped thru where our SE Qld Retirees tour went.
Unfortunately not one piece of metal is for sale in the St George yard. The 85 year old guy that owns them is going to restore the 300 he owns. Now where have I heard that before???
Never mind, its being out there & able to touch & feel the old metal that keeps me going, & not murder the next person that tells me "I'm gunna do that one up soon, mate, it wont take much to have it running & useable again"
Isn't outback Australia a great place. Hopefully you guys, & the rest off us that sneak out for a short trip every now & then, will inspire those that think its too hard, (which it isn't), to get out of the city & live, even if its only for a few days.
The crazy thing is that you enjoy life more as you get older, & realise you should have done it when you were younger & fitter.
You only get one pass at living, & no matter how much you stash away for retirement doesnt help you if your times up before the retirement date.
Vintage caravanning can be so much fun it shouldnt be allowed.
It can be fun

G'day folks, When we left St. George on Monday 21st September, we had checked the weather forecast on the internet............thunderstorms with raised dust had been predicted for Lightning Ridge................it was raining as we proceeded south, so decided to camp up at Hebel, 4kms from the NSW border and sit out the predicted weather.................on the way to Hebel, we passed through Dirranbandi................... another pub ................. Onto Hebel, the last town in Queensland on the Castlereagh Highway.................... Unfortunately, the dust storm of Wednesday 23rd September didn't stop at the NSW border...........whilst millions of people in NSW & Queensland (and NZ ) were affected by the dust, this was our perspective from the one pub, one store, one school, half a dozen houses town of Hebel, 4kms from the NSW border............ Sunset, 22nd September, 2009................. Sunrise, 23rd September 2009...................... Sunset, 23rd September 2009........................ Sat out the storm and headed for Lightning Ridge, Friday 25th September...................... This is the border crossing............... Welcome to Queensland.................all sorts of things happening here .............. as opposed to.......welcome to NSW......State of the waratah gotta make ya wonder On to Lightning Ridge, via the metropolis of Angledool........................ So here we are....Saturday 26th September, 2009 in Lightning Ridge........another minor dust storm, "Lady Madonna's Travels" finally up todate, Geelong won the AFL Grand Final (who cares), and adventure & opal prospecting to follow this week................. If you go into the Pub near the Caravan Park, ask for Billy Ferguson and when you find him, or he finds you , tell him you know Peter Taylor from Newcastle. Bill is a great bloke and a local.......and heavily into old cars. He used to be in the Newcastle Vintage Car Club many years ago. Love the photos of your trip .......keep them coming. Regards....Humpty.

ok daggsey
fess up.......... ;D ;D...... the photos of the little dust storm that passed over the eastern half of Aussie Land left a couple of specs of red on your car and caravan.
Did you find a car wash to drive through... A stream or did you get out with the bucket and mob?
The car and caravan look nice and shiney in the later photos.
do keep them photos coming.... helps with my motivation and planning... ;D ;D
