I'm looking at buying a caravan that I saw today. It is totally cute and cosy. No idea of its age. Last registered in 1976. Has the marble look laminex and mother of pearl type cupboard knobs....60's?? Mechanically appears .in great condition. It's a two berth- so fairly small, but with an in excellent condition annex. It's a viscount ambassador. Anyone know anything about those?

G'day dorisday74, Your picture shows that the van is likely to be a 1969, 1970 or perhaps 1971 Ambassador. If you check on the drawbar next to the jockey wheel, there will be a chassis number welded there. For the Ambassador model, it "should" be the letter 'E' followed by some numbers if it's a '69 or '70 model. If it's a '71 model, the 'E' will be at the end of the numbers. See our Down History Lane section ( click here ) for more information about the Ambassadors. cheers, Al.

Thanks Al! That's great info. I'll get onto it. I'm really hoping to creep into the 60s....but given that I'm a 1974 baby myself- I should just be content it's older than me!

Oooooo.....and I just read the history thread about viscounts! How fascinating! I am now torn in regards to repainting it. Clearly "the flash" is distinctly viscount. How could I just paint it away! I might have to stick to just updating curtains instead.

Lookout Doris, what starts as well I'd better not change the paint design turns into trying to source slothead screws, dome headed escutcheons, barkcloth curtain fabric, vinyl tiles, traditional laminex etc. Which does drive one a bit batty because everything they made these vans out of is no longer available Oh, I forgot to mention upholstery (materials & vinyl no longer made), window rubber, window catches, door & cupboard hardware! You will possibly develop vintage van-itis, but luckily there are lots of people on here with the same illness & they provide superb support network Welcome

I even had a dream I went back in time to source materials. That is how badly I am affected! ;D

Sooo funny!! Yep, you're right. I've been showing my picture of the caravan around to anyone half interested today- and the general response has been " you can't possibly paint over the flash!" I guess it would be like painting over the Nike "swoosh" . I might have caught more if the vintage caravan bug than first intended...
