I am trying to find the year of manufacture of our van. Purchased from a deceased estate, so no old rego papers. It has been off the road for 27 years that we know of. It is 15ft Viscount, aluminium, originally a silvery colour with green 'lightning flashes' down either side. Rounded windows front & back. We have advertised it as a 1970's, some people have commented that it is much older,(1962) others said it could be up to 1980's! We don't know.....many more pics available. Help please, as this is new territory for us! It is listed on Gumtree as "1970's renovated Viscount renovated retro".....dark beige & cream.

G'day mate, For those who haven't found the Gumtree add. look HERErhrowlands.... have a look at the Viscount thread in our DHL click here to get clues how old your van might be. If you can find a number welded on the "A" frame somebody on the forum will tell you what day it was made ....... maybe Cobber.

G'day rhrowlands,
One of the many things we still have to learn about for the Viscount history is when did they actually start using the "log cabin" profile of cladding that's on your van. It seems to have been approximately 1969/1970 when it first appeared.
If you say the van was originally silver cladding with lightning stripes on the side, then those two bits of info would make it from mid-1968 to around the end of 1969. Then we can narrow that range down further by looking at the welded chassis number on the front drawbar (which should be the letter "A" followed by numbers).
If the inside of the cupboards are still as original, look for a date written on the inside of the wardrobe. We've had one instance where a member found a 1969 date in his Viscount cupboard.
cheers, Al.

Further to my post yesterday..thanks for the replies. I have checked the inside all of the cupboards & cannot find any numbers written at all. They all appear original. The number on the tow frame is A6596 (this is VIN No. on rego.)....does this give any clues?. I have noted pics of similar layout vans, but this one is completely laminate covered inside. Very light coloured (fawn) on ceiling & cupboard sides, dinette etc. a shade darker (only just) on cupboard & wardrobe doors. The laminate on the table top & the sliding cooker cover is flat, just off white (no shine). The other van pics. I've seen have been timber cupboards etc. Thanks, Rex

Have not taken the cover off the electrics box, (auto electrician did this)...will check it tomorrow. It weights 820kg. Thanks, Rex

Look under the table, a lot of 1967-69 Viscount Ambassadors have the build date scrawled on it. Its a later model Ambassador around 1970 from the windows.
