Hello all Does anyone know how these work, or to be more accurate, how to get them to work when they don't? Handle moves up and down fine. If I unscrew the bottom section a brass (?) marble falls out, and there appears to be another one rattling around loose in the main section of the shaft. I think I can get into that section if I unscrew the handle, but I haven’t yet tried as I don’t know what I’m looking for. Can anyone advise on what I should do with it? I can take it to pieces and post more pics if that would help. It’s about 30 cm tall and the person I bought it from didn’t know what it had come off originally. Is it too big for a caravan tap do you think? Also the chrome (I’m guessing it’s chrome – happy to be corrected) is quite dirty. If the pumping mechanism can be made to work, what’s the best way to clean up the outside? Would it need re-chroming?

I do not know this particular Pump However two marbles sound about right.
The bottom marble is the non return valve and and the one in the body blocks off the outlet pipe.
There will be one or two cups made from rubber or leather on the shaft (one up and one down) or maybe an O ring, when the shaft is lifted the Cup seals against the side of the pump housing and sucks water into the chamber past the lower marble (non return valve), the upper marble stops air being sucked into the chamber. ie the chamber fills with water. When the handle is pushed down the cup seals against the body and applies pressure to the water and the lower marble seals and the one that was blocking the outlet pipe now allows water to pass by and allows the water flow down the outlet pipe.
The troubles if any will be the seats for the marbles not sealing or the Cup/s or O ring has gone hard or disintegrated. Hope this helps Rattles
PS Looks to be a well made Pump hope you can fix it.

G'day hilldweller, reddo's usually the "go-to" man for these old taps, as far as knowing what replacement parts are available, and where to get them. If you know how to use the forum search engine, look for fynspray or whale for 3000 days and 50 results (there are 19 threads from 2006 to this year ). That will tell you a fair bit about these old taps. cheers, Al.

hilldweller, that style of pump is completely useless, No really it is, I will PM you my postal address and I will see to it that it is safely disposed of so that no one gets hurt Cool looking pump,I'm with rattles, shouldn't be to hard to get it back in shape and pumping, as for the chrome try scrubbing it with lemon juice I believe the citric acid has the strength to bring it back, you would only consider re-chroming if it was damaged and peeling, good luck.

OH dear look at that it's all broken now send it over and I'll see what I can do, you might be in luck soaking the parts as they may come back otherwise just replace them all and you should have it going in no time, the only reason I can think of for it not to work is that the leather cup isn't sealing against the body of the pump properly.

Quick update: after soaking overnight there is now a small amount of water coming out the tap when pumped, but I'm sure it's supposed to work better than that. Have to go into town later so will take it into a boat place and see if they can help with a replacement for the leather cup. I can't find a brand name on it anywhere.

Looking at your picture " pumptap007Small.jpg " the cup looks very hard and dry If the leather is only stiff try greasing the cup with Vaseline.
It is the grease that provides the seal to provide the suction to lift the water into the body of the pump. You can make a new leather cup out of a piece of thin leather. Cut a circle to suit the pump (straighten existing cup and measure across to find the diameter, form a small hole in the middle to suit the pump cup retaining bolt then grease and fold into a cup. This will work or you may be able to get a cup from a garden sprayer replacement kit.
