Hi Doug "have you thought about the damage that the bikes will do to the vinyl?... Yeah mate... i am not too concerned about that. I build things for a purpose.... and that is to use ém ... not to show off and admire. Having said that i dont think road bike tyres will cart much rubbish up onto the vinyl. Only concerns may be anchoring the rear end of the bike from sliding around and bunching up the lino. Might look at making a removable track for the wheel to sit in simil;ar to the front wheel brace so its secured in place when travelling... and can be "Quick released"when it comes time to make the bed up.... Ray .. i will have no way of telling how well the tape will seal. I cant get a look at the inside /cavity as it is filled with Styrene foam and i have lined the inside walls with ply.... If the water was to get passed the tape it would then have to find its way passed the sikaflex i used to seal the roof to the frame. a continous bead about 6mm in thickness from one end to the other .. with rivets every 300mm...Sooooooo... she should be watertight. The bloody thing will float if it ever ends up in a river... Regards Reddo. Read more: vintagecaravans.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=talk&action=display&thread=9745&page=5#ixzz2DcCfbN3y

Ya can get it milkin a cow Ya can get it pushin a plough... . In fact .... I've got it now.... A hard earned thirst deserves a big cold beer... .................................................................................................................................. Oh.. come off it Reddo... its only 6.30am sunday morning... Oooo Bugga.. wotami gunna do with my day of abstainence.. I know.. J mould.. thats wattle do... So.. with 4 fresh lengths of nice shiney j mould down the shed just waitin to be mangalated by some inexperience oddball i put on my PPE ... Pluggers...Poncho and 'éadphones and set a course to the shed... In no time i had all sortsa electrical gizzmos layin around the driveway.. I chose this arena as it is easier to hose away the blood after i puncture myself.... ;D Also makes it easier to wrap the 4 metre length of j mould over the object to be wrapped... Try doin this in the shed and ya end up with the tall bit stuck up between the trusses... I engaged my lovely assistant ( 6.30am in her PJs) to hold the offending apparatus while i bunged a coupla pop rivets into the sucker....then away i went.. drill .. pop.. drill.. pop... Before i knew it i had a driveway full of broken drill bits.. spilt pop rivets and ... blood.. not much mind you .. just a little.. Toil .. pop.. drill.. sweat.. drill .. pop.. toil.. and so it went on for a good few hours.. well it seemed like hours without a beer in my hand Only pausing to glance at the clock and see if the early opener was open yet.. ( beer fridge in shed ).. Must resist temptation.. must be strong... focus... by mid morning the neighbours six dogs had barked themselves horse ( god bless there rowdy little pushed in faces ) and i had both side moulds in place..... According to " 'er indoors" Still not elligable for my first beer of the day.. so focused on the tailgate where i had tried to even up the gaps between the body and the gate itself.. not easy when you dont have any adjustment or elongated... .. pause here for edumacation lesson ( might make that word for today.. everyone practice.. elongated.. To make out of round.. irregular shape,,,slot... Remedy for botched fitting attempt.. aid to forcing screws into misaligned screw holes.. say again .. elongate).. Now where was i.. Oh yeah.... Ya aint got no adjustment to move the tailgate around.. so ya use jay mould to even up/ close up the gaps and make it look like ya knew what ya where doin when ya actually stuffed up bigtime... ;D at $7.50 a length its a cheap tidy up.. 'ere ya go.. see .. told ya i am a wasted talent.. should have been a butcher... By now i could have sworn... ( i am good at that.. it helps with aligning misaligned screws ) ... it was beer oclock... I approached " the evil one" who is in charge of my rehab and she said no to a beer .. so....... Had a fiddle with a few old vents i have been thinkin about usin somewhere on the TD... bolted three of em together and strung em up on the front window of the TD. just for a trial looksee.... Another head ache for another day... Whats that she saying... i am allowed refreshments?? Bloody bewdy mate.. down tools.. thats it for today. Rip that carton open you elves Time for a few bandages and a coupla coldies... I keep tellin the "trouble and strife"... ....."Man aint no camel.. Just an Aussie bleeder that needs XXXX gold to help the blood congei.. congee.. ... conjee.. ta help make me blood go gooey. Cheers .. as in raise a glass Reddo

Hi Reddo,
Its looking more like a genuine replica teardrop than all the so called teardrops out there for sale.
Talking about blood thickeners/coagulants, I'm on a few medications since I had a heart problem, & the quacks cant make up their minds about what I should be taking.
So as a consequence when I walk past something I end up bleeding. Just about own shares in the band aid companies.
I had 14 bandaids on my arms this arvo. I've been rebuilding the floor , kitchen & beds of "Ethel" the Olympic. Thats just about all there is in it except for the internal fibreglass skin.
So I followed your thought pattern around 4 pm & sunk a few Bourbons. Didnt help the band aid problem, but sure as hell felt better.
The things we do for enjoyment.
But it is still all fun.

Looking good Reddo! I particularly like the slope of the back, and the two triangular shapes for the future windows. Very appealing. Your Warden is right to keep you off the turps - no good for your hand, cruel though it may be! Though I suspect that drilling and working metal might not have been on the discharge plan from the hospital either... Take care of the mitt - Seeshell

Yo.. "Take care of the mitt -" No worries Seeshells... I had the hand bandaged up with a big pad over the stitches and a welders glove over that. I am amazed at just how easy it is to adapt to using your left hand to do most of the work. Just have to overcome that natural reflex of reaching for everything with your right. Doc wouldnt remove the stitches last week. They come out this thursday... Then it will be full steam ahead on the TD . Been fiddling with a sheet of western red cedar top sheet ply today.. trying to come up with an infill shape for the lower half either side of the Van... got curvey pencil lines all over the side of the van at the moment Reddo

Episode # 86... Spent yesterday fiddling with the back window ... Cut out the holes....There is a steel frame on the inside of the tailgare so i was restricted by that area as to how big the windows could be. Ended up settling on a shape then cut the alloy out. Then used the offcut pieces to make the template for the Perspex windows. Template was about 20mm bigger than the inside of the offcut so the lexen will sit on the alloy with a 20mm overlap. Made the first frame out of 3 mm ply. This is the same thickness as the lexen. With the template in my hand i headed off to buy some lexen. at Trident plastics. Ended up paying $36 for the 2 pieces of smoked black cut to size while i was there. No need for holes as it will be held against the alloy with Butyl Mastic and entrapped in the recess formed by the 3 ply ... Came home and trial fitted the lexen in the timber frames.. Then cut two more frames out of the same alloy i have covered the van in. This will sit over the 3mm ply frame and the edge of the lexen. Trial fitted the wooden and alloy frames together and ground /sanded the outer and inner edges so they are identical.. Glued em together with liquid nails.... Let it dry overnight... Up this morning... drilled the mounting holes in both frames. Lined em up on the van with masking tape and drilled the screw holes in the van.. Then run a bead of buityl mastic in the recess where the lexen fits and squished the lexen into the black muck... Next was a bead of butyl mastic around the timber frames and bunged the frames on the van. I had marked the van using the frames as a template and then used masking tape about 2mm inside the edge of the texta mark to form a surface so that if any of the mastic oozed out from behind the frame when i tightened it up it wouldnt get all over the van. .. no clean up afterwards apart from pulling the tape away cleanly.... Learnt this trick watching Kaybees do a running repair on the back window of thier van at Tathra.. Thanks for the tip Col.. Each window has about 9 staino phillips head.... .. screws holding it on at the moment... when supplies come to hand.... I will swap em for button head stainless allen keyed 6 mm screws with dome nuts on the inside...... Had considered using all timber frames but i thought i would stick with the all alloy look on the front/rear and roof.. leave the fancy timberwork for the sides and inside... I could not have done it without the help of my beautiful little grandaughter Hannah ... what a big help she turned out to be....c'mon Grumps.. push me on the billycart.. Can i have a swim in the pool??.. Push me on the swing!!!.... So we compromised.. 1/2 hour swings, billycats, swimming.. 2 minutes on the van.... The finished look... Sorta starting to look like an "Ärmidillo".. or.. an "Alloydillo "... Starting to sort out the side moulds...Joinery works is doing some rebating on some timber for me . Will call and pick it up after i see the doc and get my stitches out today... See yas later .. Hannah and i are off to play Billcarts for a while........................... She sure knows how to enjoy herself.... ;D ;D ;D We also have an infestation of Beetles in the lawn that i need to Spray.. the buggers are getting bigger now that things are warming up... Regards Reddo

G'day Reddo,
The "not everyone's cup of teardrop" is coming along very nicely indeed. I like the windows you've just installed - quite a touch of Cruz's Runlite with that shape and position.
I'm fascinated with the way you create and innovate as you go along, coming up with a result that is unique but firmly rooted in the V V tradition. In some ways your creations end up being more vintage than some of the genuinely vintage. Not sure how you do it - just a fertile imagination, I guess... ;D ;D ;D
Whatever, your thread on this van is more watchable than a lot of what's on telly. So don't mind me watching over your shoulder while you work.
Nice to see you taking some time off to play with Hannah, too. She deserves it after all that heavy lifting you've had her doing on the van. ;D ;D ;D

Hi All Been a bit slack with the toil on the NECOT TD project.... man .. i am gunna have to come up with a proper name fr it soon... Between dragging home the EH Panno and the Kempsey Caravan Park Van i have been struggling to make progress on the TD.... Did manage to get the gaurds back from the fobergrosser and get a coat of primer on them, Then sand em back and they are now at the spray painters waiting for a coat of metallic silver... Been fiddling around and trying to decide on a period looking tail/brake light for the centre of the "Boot lid" After going to the FX/FJ Nats i have decided a nice FX or FJ sedan tailight assembly would fit the bill.... Soooo.. i am putting out a plea to all the early humpy owners and asking if they have a unit they would be willing to part with... It doesnt have to be a mint assembly ... in fact it can be as rough as you like.. i can always linish it up to get rid of all the lumps , bumps, rust etc..and paint it. Would be good if it had a tidy red lense in it for rego purposes.... Dont want to dig into anyones good spares...Just a useable light woulkd be great... or .. if anyone has anything of a similar nature/ shape to the FX/FJ unit .. Vauxhall??? That would be great Can anyone help, Regards Reddo

Gday Reddo. Got one fj/x ifn you want it. Not flash but presentable. No globe fitting but fixing plate as well as fixing screws attached. I`m guessing you`ll need to fit to a timber backing or thickish rubber as these fittings have a slight arc from point to point. Reference info -16" width. Outer fixing screws 10" C to C. Inner 3 5/8" C to C. Can post. gordo

Hi Gordon Thanks heaps for your reply I wasnt aware that the light base had a slight curve laterally . I figured it would be curved from top to bottom as the bootlid has a curve in it ... However...Things can be adapted to suit..... PM sent. Regards Reddo

Yep they have a curve both ways so here is my solution to the problem, Got a piece of board big enough to do the job and hit it with the 100 mm sander and shaped both sides till I was happy with the result, don't think it came up to bad either and there is a rubber seal you can get from Rares that goes behind the housing as also.

Hiya DC3TD.. and.. thanks heaps for the donated FJ tail light,,,, and.. Thanks Humpyboy for the idea on a backing board. I made a start on the side panels this morning.. then got dragged away by the missus for a few hours riding on the Norton.... I didnt complain... was good to be out for a run in the cooler weather. Back in the shed by 12 ish and set about wallpapering the side of the TD.. Yup... You heard right... I figure if its got lino on the ceiling i am justified in wall papering the sides...No poofey timber,,, Just yesterdays Newcastle Morning Herald... bloody Bewdy mate.... ;D Ok.. i am fibbing.. I used the paper to mark out a template for the side infills... i was going to use 5 ply and stain the timber ,,, however i have this addiction for Aluminium on this van ... so.. with template cut out on the side of the van i got Trish to give me a hand to untape it and carry it out onto the sheet alloy . Marked it out and took to it with the air nibbler.. what a great little gadget.. Saves wrestlin with jig saws and braking blades. Once i had the shape right i used this sheet to make a reverse pattern for the other side of the van,,, i then gave the contact area on the van a good spread of Liquid nails to help hold the sheet in place.. Then i eased the j mould open and slid the edge of the sheet in behind it. Lined it up where it had to sit and bunged a few temporary self tappers in the edges to hold it in place until the goop dries hard.. Once side... Other side took a bit longer as it had to be cut into three pieces . used a straight edge to mark where the top edge of the three sections had to sit to be straight.. and Bobs your uncle... O Oh Magoo... You've done it again.. And look.. i am all cleaned up by 6.00pm... Time to snap open the deckchair ..crack open a few stubbies and sit back and admire the handwork..... Clock is ticking.. "Toads and roaches Tour"closin in fast... TD half done.. Panno in a million bits... Cybill D Caravan park van out in the gutter decomposing... I dunno why i let myself get sucked into so many silly projects at one time. ;D Footnote: Didja notice the little plaque near the door handle?? I am over the moon.. I had the caravan builders association of australia drop by today and i have been approval to build .."Genuine replica reproduction fake vintage lookalike caravans"...Man am i stoked... They dont just give out those little paques to anyone i'll have ya know.... Cheers fa now... Reddo
