Yo all.. Just thought i would kick off another bit of a competition sorta along the lines of 'Wheres is this"
Can anyone tell me who was ... "David of Dalkeith"
Clue: He was an icon to all of the australian motoring public for many years up to the 1970s
Regards Reddo.

G'day Reddo,
Good to see that you're firing on all (most?) cylinders for 2012! ;D ;D ;D
Dunno who David from Dalkeith was, but I'm guessing there is some association with Dalkeith in WA?

Clue N0: 2.
He was easily seen when you where driving down the road. In fact there was 100s of like images of "David" in each state.
You would have definitely seen him no matter what car you drove .. or wherever you drove.

G'day reddo, The only Google search results relating specifically to "David of Dalkeith" are the two that point to this thread. Therefore, this David of Dalkeith is not a very well-known piece of information, because the internet, as we all know, knows everything. Therefore, ergo, erstwhile, wherewithall...I have to guess that it's something to do with the white posts on the side of the road that have reflectors on them. And if nothing else, I will have saved all those other people on the forum who thought the same thing, and who now won't have to embarrass themselves in public. (No, no, don't thank me Dosse ) cheers, Al.

Hiya dosse! ;D You know what? Out of all the forum names I could have pulled out of the hat to insert in my one-line 'joke', I chose yours, without even thinking about the David connection. Am I psychic, or what?!! Great to hear from you again, dosse! ;D ;D cheers, Al.

;D ;D ;D ;D Wooo Hoooo.. congrats to Jeffb.. Ummmm..... .. Hey humps .. ifn it was so damn easy whyndhell didnja jump in earlier ..... You will have to settle for second ... Yup....Jeffb "David of Dalkeith " was the "model " for the Golden Fleece ram. What an Aussie Icon.... Yeah .. yeah .. sure .. sure..the kangaroo is instantly identifiable as the most famous Ausssie critter.. However.. back in the 40s, 50s and 60s.. maybe into the 70s.. Australias future rode on the sheeps back. .. So... what better icon for H.C Sleigh ( see you tube link further on) to pick than good old "Fleecey Dave" ( Not Dossie.. he is a totally different icon ) He was... Seen by all the motoring public on top of those beaut big neon ? fluoro signs on the corner of the Golden Fleece service station sites that where in abundance back in the 60s and 70s... Who hasnt eaten at a Golden Fleece Roadhouse as a kid on thier travels with mum and dad??? www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXVkKayp8h8&feature=relatedOk... I only learned about the ram while researching Golden fleece logos from the 60s to bung on the old Holden panelvan. I have a competant signwriter in the wings and he wont start until we get the logo period correct.. Me n him grew up directly across Main Road Young Wallsend from a Golden Fleece servo. It was a local hang for a lot of us.. Never had a Diner.. but the Fanta was always cold. Activ-8 was good stuff.... and at less than 2 bob a gallon ( almost 5 litres ) .. life was good . Here is a you tube link from the ÄBC Collectors series" www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxmTuUq6i74&feature=related( The Fargo is a local truck.. i love it) Hope the links work... Hope all you baby boomers enjoy the memories Onya Jeffb Its your turn Regards Reddo

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Hey Reddo, Yep I just happened to know about the old Ram. Was back in 1951 A prize Merino Ram, ( David of Dalkeith) owned by Boonoke Stud was chosen as the model then in 1952 was a Royal Sydney Show winner. I can't possibly think of a similar question so I'll hand it back to you. jeff

Good one Reddo, some nice memories there.
'David of Dalkieth' was just a show pony though compared to their ram in 1926, he could drive your car, whatever his name was.

;D ;D ;D ;D Yeah.. i thought it was worth sharing.. Called at the bros place yesterday .. he gave me a book on Äustralian Trademarks".. Hundreds of em... A hell of a lot not politically correct nowadays.. Also .. an even bigger .. hell of a lot more no longer in existence. Where is Dick Smith when we need him?? I see he's trying to save Hienz tomato sauce from floating offshore... Will take a few pictures of some of the pages... and bung em up here later.. Names like .. Tazans grip.. Goanna Salvo.. C.O.R.. .. Kookaburra .. ABO PAINTS.... "Possum rub.. easy on the gums " ...Federal matches..Mavern star....Billy Tea" Another for .. "Äustralian cloth.. Made for Australians .. from Australian products..by Austrakian workers for.. Australian people".. ya cant tell me they wheren't patriotic back then aye... We should look to our past to secure our future... Oh yeah.... There is a bit of a moral to this entire thread... never.. ever.. ever.. really on google/ Wickedpedia ta give ya an answer to anything/ everything.. sure.. the answer will be there .. somewhere... and i will admitt i learned about old Dave the ram from searching an entirely different topic / subject matter.. All us old buggers where bought up on books.... never ever be ashamed to admit that ..and turn to em for answers to lifes silly questions.. .. thrown up by silly people every now and again Besides that.. ya can sniff the pages and savour the history.. . try sniffin google Chase this one.. "p.89 of ‘Symbols of Australia"by Mimmio Cozzolino ..( Aussie boy i am sure ) first published 1980 ..wherein is the brief but concise history of how H.C.Sleigh.. importer of californian motor spirits in 1913 came to use the ram (and its name an sheep station!) Onya H.C .. your a legend. Ok... here is todays homework.. Who is "The screw man" He also is an Australian icon from Melbourne... been around since 1940.. still with us today Stay tuned for pixs from Mimmos book.. Reddo

Now that ya have seen the initials i reckon most of you will remember buying a brown cardboard box full of slot head.. counter sunk.... wood .. metal screws from his company. Companys initials are... S.C . I said the company was still with us today... wrong .....They where bought out by the Kiwis in 1980's Reddo

Gee thanks Reddo!
Seeing the screwman DID remind me of a time when I previously lived in Melbourne and drove a 2 1/2 tonne taxi truck for a courier company here. I used to have to transport Saxon nails across Melbourne. Didn't take too many boxes to bring the tray close to the tyres!!!
I don't have the advantage of Mimmo's book, so will try a different approach. What is Tom Price remembered for? And NO, it's not Mount Tom Price!

G'day Ray, Are you thinking of the Tom Price who was the first Labor Premier of South Australia ? Not sure what else he would be remembered for though Cobber.

No cobber, nothing as uninteresting as politics!
What he introduced is something still very much in use today.
Thereby hangs another clue!

Thomas Moore Price named after the town & mountain worked for Kaiser Steel USA. Was instrumental for lobbying our Federal & State governments to not only mine but export the ore.

Aw! I was going to say Colonel Tom Price... but I thought it was too silly to mention 'cause I made an arse ass of me self on me last guess, so I didn't mention him. If you win with this guess Dave I bags half the prize money Cobber.

Goodonya Dave, ya got it right From the 5th Battalion RAR website: "The khaki hat first became part of an Australian military uniform in 1885, when it was chosen for the newly-formed Victorian Mounted Rifles by the commanding officer, Colonel Tom Price. Years later, F. D. Price, his youngest son, a former member of the unit and a veteran of the Boer War, related the origin of the hat to his father's experience in Burma, where native police wore similar head-dress." That well known trademark has certainly been around for a long time. When I was in the CMF, I made the unwitting mistake of walking into a bar with my slouch hat on Luckily I was forgiven, cos the bar was full!! Only lasted there 18 months, decided it was not for me after being charged with being AWOL - nothing more embarrassing than being marched off the next parade with all the paraphenalia stripped off you in front of the whole parade Over to you Dave
