G'day All, I have two Bunnings sheds within about 30kms from my home. Both of them have Wattyl Solagard paint on clearance. Wattyl Solagard is an exterior grade acrylic paint, ideal for plywood. I seem to remember reading a couple of months ago that Bunnings didn't renew the contract with Wattyl for supply of paint. The ladies in the paint dept tonight confirmed that once their stocks are sold, no more will be put on the shelf. My stores have 4 litre cans of white gloss and white 'low sheen'. Clearance price is now $39; was $61.90. Larger size cans are available. White can be tinted to the lighter colours on the colour chart. One of my stores also has Wattyl exterior acrylic primer/undercoat, but only in Light Grey colour. That's ok for putting under the darker shades of top coat. Price for 4 litres is now $30; was $46.90. If you are in the market for some of this type of paint, head along to your nearest store sooner rather than later, and see if they are doing the same deals. Once they've gone, that's it. cheers, Al.

Smart move there, aquamum. I need to make a correction to the info above about the primer/undercoat. It's the British Paints Trade Master brand, not the Wattyl stuff. Colour is still Light Grey, and price is $30 (bought some this morning). It could be a case of just the one store doing something with their stocks though, since our other store doesn't have the same deal going. The Wattyl Solagard deal is more likely to be available across the board, as aquamum can testify. I also bought a 2 litre can of British Paints water-based enamel for $21 this morning. It was on the "mistints" pallet, but looks a nice light green shade for the inside of the project van. I've never used the water-based enamel paints before, so this will be a chance to try them out. The mistints pallet in Bunnings is also another source for cheaper paint if you happen to see a colour you like. cheers, Al.

I asked the paint dude if I needed to prime my plywood before I painted the low sheen paint I bought.....he said no ! He also did not recommend using the Solaguard on the roof as it would "crack due to movement" Using it on the sides of my VV would be okay cause they are ridged ?

G'day aquamum, Most of these exterior grade acrylics don't need any primer these days. Seems the scientific boffins have worked out how to make them self-priming. However, I'm still stuck in the old days where you painted coats of primer - undercoat - topcoat, so I get a bit nervous about just whacking a topcoat paint on bare timber. I've done it on treated pine fencing and it's been ok, but my brain says, "Huh, it's only a fence, not something really important." I'll be putting a coat or two of primer/undercoat on my project before I apply the Solagard topcoats. Call me old-fashioned, but I just feel more comfortable doing that. I'm not sure where the paint dept fella was coming from with his advice not to use it on the roof due to movement. The acrylics have very good elasticity (there's a big word, boys and girls ), so if they can't handle a bit of movement, then there won't be many other paints that will do it. Did the paint rep advise you on what to use as an alternative? I'll be using low sheen all over the outside of my project van. If it ends up cracking anywhere, it'll be because the plywood has split, not because of any "movement". We painted our house with low sheen acrylic about 5 years ago, and it still looks clean and fresh, so that'll do me. The van will be towed with a filthy dirty "jap crap" tow vehicle, so there's no point in making it look like a polished mirror. cheers, Al.

Al Your tow car is a "rice burner" ...how..dare I say it..unaustralian The green shed guy was "intrigued" about my plans for a canvas/calico roof using paint layered between sheets of calico ...told me it would crack hmm. I think I'll listen to the "boffins" on this forum who have the personal "know how" however....
